No rush today. Very leisurely rising. Listened to the West Coast Eagles v Richmond Tigers game whilst Jane decided to do some ironing! All packed for early departure for tomorrow. Walked to buy some peasant food for lunch which we ate in our apartment. It was very hot outside. Had a video call from Sam which was wonderful. He is still working on the boat out of Weipa. “All good,” he says. Had photos and messages from Tom and Whitney which was terrific. They were relaxing on the beach in Denmark with their dog, Lenny. I’ve kept up with the AFL, Ashes cricket, Tour de France, Aussie Matildas, Wimbledon and various Aussie athlete performances as well as the swimming … plus … the devastating war … plus news from home. We went to “Sport Pub Mario” ... read more

Apart from walking the 3km to and from the beach for a swim it was a day of ‘taking-it-easy’. The evening took us to dinner before a long stroll through the 'well-to-do' area of the suburb of Lapad with views from sunset beach across Uvala Lapad. We followed the seawall path which has expensive restaurants both hillside and seaside of it, until seeing the suns rays piercing the clouds before deciding to retrace our steps.... read more

We made the decision to catch an early bus into the old town so as to be able to avoid the hordes of tourists that would probably descend upon the wall as the morning progressed. An excellent decision as we were not held up, felt rushed or crushed at any stage. Information given to us had the following: "Today’s size of the Dubrovnik walls was shaped in the 13th century. The walls were systematically updated and built up to 1660 when the last Bastion of St Stephan was finished in the southern segment of the walls. The 1940m long walls consist of the main city wall, sixteen towers, three fortresses, six bastions, two corner fortifications (’kantonate’), three bulwarks with rows of turrets, three moats, two flank fortresses, one breakwater, and two drawbridges. At some points up ... read more

It was up early to be on deck to catch our entrance into Dubrovnik. It is the best way to enter … beats plane or vehicle, even walking. The sea was blue and calm. The sky was devoid of cloud, totally clear with the sun rising quickly and its rising warmth was clearly being felt. We were in for a hot one. As we sailed closer the channel became very busy with smaller craft, not necessarily small craft but craft smaller than the ferry. The white MSC cruise ship entering behind us was the largest. All the boats making their way past us in both directions were of high quality, a number made of wood, some already filled with clients or heading to pickup clients. The Franjo Tudman Bridge across the Rijeka Dubrovacka with the morning ... read more

Saturday, July 1st, 2023 Dubrovnik to Pag Today Drea and I made the journey from Dubrovnik to Pag. Pag is an island in the northern Adriatic Sea. There are two towns on the island, Pag and Novalja. We will be staying in the town of Novalja. Pag is known for its moon-like landscape, and cheese and as the party capital of the Adriatic. However, Drea and I were not going to Pag for any of those reasons. We were going to Pag as we had dinner reservations at Boškinac Restaurant and Winery, where we’ll be trying their Michelin Star tasting menu. This restaurant was a Bourdainškinac Restaurant and Winery at their Grill which was delicious as well. Tomorrow, we head back to Zagreb to spend a couple of days before I head back to Canada.... read more

Today was a relaxing pool day which was much needed. I laid down by the pool, read my book, and jumped off the rocks into the Adriatic Sea. In the evening we headed to Prora Beach Restaurantat Hotel Excelsior for dinner and to enjoy the sunset over the Adriatic with Dubrovnik old town in the background. At dinner, our waiter recognized Drea’s last name “Luburic.” Drea’s ancestor was a General who helped Croatia get independence from Yugoslavia. He praised Drea’s family for helping Croatia in their role of obtaining independence. It was an interesting experience to witness. Tomorrow, Drea and head over to Pag known for its Moon-like landscape. Until Then!... read more

Today after breakfast at the hotel, I headed into Dubrovnik’s old town to determine if I was able to join the Game of Thrones tourthat morning. Luckily, I was able to join the morning tour. Some of the Game of Thrones filming locations on the tour included: 1. The Jesuit Stairs – The location of Cersei’s Walk of Shame 2. Fort Lovrijenac: Various scenes including where Sansa almost gets raped in Kings Landing and the Hound saves her, the “Knowledge is Power, Power is Power scene”, and the kings’ tournament for Joffrey’s name day 3. Minceta Tower: The House of the Undying 4. Gradac Park: The Purple Wedding Celebration 5. City Walls of Dubrovnik This morning I woke up early to walk the city walls when it opened. The city walls surround the city centre of Dubrovnik. It took me approximately 1.5 hours to walk the city walls while stopping to take incredible pictures of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops. Mount Srd and Panorama Restaurant I then met Drea at the entrance to the city walls and we headed up to Mount Srd to see Dubrovnik from Above. We had reservations at Panorama Restaurant and Bar at 10:00 am. Panorama received a Michelin star and was worth the trip up the mountain. I enjoyed my coffee and treat while enjoying the view of the city walls from above. We then headed back to the hotel to enjoy time by the pool. I booked a Game of Thrones tour ... read more

Split to Dubrovnik Today we departed Split and headed to Dubrovnik. I woke up early to take pictures of Diocletian’s Palace while it was quiet and check out the view from Marjan Hill. Then, it was about a 3-hour drive from Split to Dubrovnik where we stayed at the Ariston Hotel at the Royal Resort. I had my first cliff-jumping experience which was terrifying but worthwhile. Then we had dinner in Dubrovnik's old town. We went to Dubravka Restaurant which provided a great view overlooking the old city walls and the food was great as well. After dinner, we walked around the old town a bit and I had my first Affogato while watching people climb the Jesuit stairs. Tomorrow, I will get a chance to climb the wall and get a panoramic view of the ... read more

Plitvice National Park Today, we left early in the morning on our road trip to the coast of Croatia. The first stop was Plitvice Lakes National Park. Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Croatia. In 1979, the park was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Andrea dropped me off at the entrance of the park. The park is beautiful but it took me over an hour to get in. I did not spend that much time at the park because we needed to head over to Split before it got dark. I would one day need to come back to Croatia to experience the park in all its glory. Split We arrived in Split in the late afternoon. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia after the ... read more
