Trogir, Sibernik and Krka National Park, on 9 July 2013 We drove further north along the Croatian coast and came to Trogir, a town that was founded by the Greeks in 3rd century BC. We had read that its Cathedral was one of the finest in the Adriatic so we wanted to pop in a see it. Trogir’s old town is built on an oval-shaped land squeezed between the mainland an d the larger island of Ciova. Modern Trogir stretches for several kms along the coast. We parked the camper and walked over the 17th C. Land Gate, a simple arch topped with a statue of the town’s protector, St John of Trogir. We visited the Cathedral and walked around the town. I have included some photos of the town. We then drove 60 kms north ... read more

It's always a bit slower waiting for 20 people to get up and get going in the morning, but the sun is always there to enjoy while you're waiting! It's a bit different travelling with this many other people, because we are usually go, go, go, but it's a nice change of pace. Once we got ourselves organized this morning, the whole lot of us drove about an hour north-west of Split, to the Krka National Park. This national park is home to what is thought to be the best waterfall in Europe. The park had many different waterfall cascades and crystal clear blue water. It was very idyllic, aside from the crowds of people that were visiting. The water was just so enticing that we decided to go for a swim in one of the ... read more

This blog is dedicated to my mom and her yearning for photos of me and neighbours at Shane Cooney's wedding. I finally arrived to Croatia by ferry (Dubrovnik) this past Thursday. It is currently Monday night and I think my head has finally settled down from the whirlwind the past days have been. Despite the great time I experienced playing soccer with locals in Bari, back to back to back ferries followed by a long and sweaty (no AC) bus ride had me at sorts when I arrived in Sibenik for the Cooney wedding. Sweat dripping, I barged into the resort Cooney and Friends were staying in and happily ran into the Koniers shortly after. What a change of pace. In Bari, I stayed at a "luxurious bed and breakfast," which was extremely ironic because I ... read more

After our sailing it was back to the Bongo, although we had a terrific week on the yacht, it seemed good to be on the road again. We headed off to Krka National Park just north of where we had been sailing. Referring back to what we said of an earlier blog about not knowing what to expect of our next campsite. We arrive at Camp Marina just outside the National park. If you imagine one of those road trip movies where the car pulls in to a garage in the middle of nowhere, where a lone attendant is sitting on the veranda as though they were the first customer they had for a looong while, well that was the scene that met us. All we needed was the tumbleweed to drift across-there was hardly ... read more

Day 61-68 Sailing in Croatia When we first decided to embark on this big trip, being keen sailors, the intention was to sail the coast from the Balearic islands to Cyprus. Our expectations gradually diminished until it looked like a quick sail from Venice to the Greek islands though still a significant challenge on its own. When we bought the Bongo we realised there is so much to see and do on the land we’d go across country and mix it with some sailing. Booking the boat only three days before we set sail, on arriving at Kremik Marina, we were assigned our boat the 32 ft yacht ‘Escargot’, that’s it I thought it’s the slowest boat in the fleet -On the contrary it went like a dream. Instead of just hiring the boat we decided ... read more

After the heat and pressure cooker of Naples, we headed up to the mountains again. Its a good place to unwind, usually quieter certainly greener, and helps us plan our next part of the journey. So we headed to the Abruzzo, national park, seems very quiet and out of the way but beautiful, with those fascinating Italian mountaintop towns so spectacular and fascinating. On arriving at our site, the owner said ‘First day of the year I have been able to put the shorts on’ it seemed crazy just a few miles south we were burning up in the heat of Naples’ I said something like now your going to spoil the weather.- two hours later we had a rainstorm like you’ve never seen. We aim to visit Croatia, with the view to doing some ... read more

From Vienna to Krka From 25th April to 11th May Is there anything as good as the first gulp of cold beer when the sun is shining? Some would argue that you don’t even need the sun to be shining, and to be honest I do agree, but then that is not ice cold larger I’d be consuming. Today it is, and with good reason. 2 days ago there were storms that swept tents away, today it is roasting hot, and the beautiful blue skies are dotted with the odd high cloud that don’t threaten anything like rain. The west coast of Croatia is beautiful. One of the nicest places I’ve found so far, and very different to where I left off the last time which was Vienna. So going back to the 25th April, I ... read more

So the Sunday morning train to Sibenik - again the train didn't leave on time, but we made the journey without any problems changing once at a tiny village called Perkovic. We arrived in Sibenik hoping to find a tourist office to find accommodation (Sibenik wasn't even mentioned in the lonely planet) but they were all closed. Instead, we saw a sign to a hotel that was way out of our budget, and asked for information there. The lady directed us a 30min walk uphill to a hostel that she wasn't convinced was even open, but we set off with a photocopy of her map. Luckily, just as we were beginning the trek Alice and Mim were approached by a lady offering an apartment for 10 pounds per person per night, and it was just 5mins ... read more

Today we took a break from visiting cities and travelled to Krka National Park. On entering the park you transfer to a bus which takes you to the major falls which are very picturesque. Many small streams spread out over a large area which come together at an impressive waterfall. The trip down the mountainside is interesting when two buses meet on a switchback road barely wide enough for 2 cars and no guardrails. We also joined a 4 hour boat tour which took us to an island which was home to a very well maintained active monastery complete with brown robed monks. The skipper was a real character who welcomed us on board with a glass of the local moonshine. They sell this stuff at the side of the road as you drive around Croatia. ... read more
