Croatia is sufficiently close to Italy to have excellent gelati. But clearly, it is also too far away from Italy to possess the skills required to make a satisfactory waffle cone. Such are the hardships of cruising the Dalmatian Coast. That is how we are feeling now. We are relaxed, enjoying some beautiful sights and well fed. I think that is what cruising is all about, isn’t it? But we didn’t feel that way from the moment we arrived in Croatia. When we got off the plane in Zagreb, we found that our bags didn’t get off the plane in Zagreb. They were still in Vienna, which was problematic! Oh well, there is no point in stressing too much about something that is out of your control. At least that is what I was saying to ... read more

We had a really wonderful day today, on our boat trip to the Kornati Islands, and most of the day was lovely and sunny. Despite the crappy weather forecast! We were so afraid that it would rain and the trip would be cancelled, but we were lucky with the weather, right until the end of the day. So, we started the day with breakfast in our apartment (yogurt, leftover bread from last night’s dinner with hummus, dried figs, banana). We had it on our balcony while admiring the view of St Michael’s Fortress in the sun. We met the others down the hill at the civilized hour of 9:30. I managed to publish the blog this morning before we left, after having lots of problems last night. The SIM card we’ve been using for our phones, ... read more

We had a wonderful day today exploring Krka National Park. It was a day of waterfalls, a beautiful monastery, and lots of steps (over 26,000 according to my fitbit). We started the day with a coffee and yogurt in the room, then walked to the coffee shop/bakery by the bus station to pick up a coffee and sandwiches for lunch later. Our mini van picked us up shortly after 8 and we were on the road for Krka National Park. The park is enormous, extending from the Adriatic near Šibenik to the mountains of the interior. We drove for about 20 minutes from Šibenik, and then walked for about two hours, walking on boardwalks past the Krka River and passing waterfall after waterfall, and climbing lots of steps. When we got to the park about 8:30 ... read more

Greetings from Sibenik! (It is pronounced “Shi-ben-ick”). We had a nice breakfast in the Hotel Slavija restaurant this morning, before our journey from Split to Sibenik. By the way, Hotel Slavija is the oldest hotel in Split, opening in 1900. The building dates back to the 17thC and was built above Diocletian’s private baths. We had breakfast in the basement of the hotel, where the Roman baths were located. We had a bit of time before we had to leave so I took a quick walk around Diocletian’s Palace. It wasn’t too busy at that time of the morning, and it was really nice just taking a bit of time to admire the fascinating buildings, and I wanted to find a chocolate shop that Zigi recommended, so I knew where it was when we come back ... read more

Only 15 km from Vodice lies the town of Sibenik. A regional commercial center today the city has a 900 yrs old history. Best travel to Sibenik from Vodice with the Jadrolinija ship, a small passenger boat (unlike its big brother ferryboats we used to go to Brac). It takes a while (about 90 minutes), as Jadrolinija stops on the islands of Prvic and Zlarin connecting these islands with the mainland. Unlike other cities along the Adriatic coast, which were established by Greeks, Illyrians and Romans, Sibenik was founded by Croats. It was mentioned for the first time under its present name in 1066 and for a period of time, it was a seat of this Croatian King Kresimir. For that reason, Sibenik is also called "Krešimirov grad" (Krešimir's city). Between the 11th and 12th centuries, ... read more

Krka National Park is located just twelve kms from Sibenik, and contains one of Croatia’s best known natural wonders, Krka Waterfalls. We headed off early to try and avoid the crowds, and arrived at the Lozovac Park Entrance at around 9.00am. The ticket price includes a bus down the mountain to the Krka River, which is where we commenced our walking tour of the waterfalls, on well maintained elevated timber walkways. The Krka River contains rarely seen Travertine deposits, which is a limestone that has settled and accumulated on mosses and algae, creating various formations. Krka was declared a National Park in 1985. Krka is famous for Skradinski Buk, which is the longest and most commonly visited waterfall on the river. Skradinski Buk is where swimming is permitted just below the waterfall, and is the reason ... read more

To avoid the traffic in Trogir this morning, we left early at 7.45am. Having reached our southernmost point on our Croatian Coast odyssey, it was time to start heading back up the coast again. Instead of taking the inland freeway, we chose to take the scenic coastal road, which has been compared to the Pacific Coast Highway of California. First stop was the picturesque town of Primosten, which is located between Trogir and Sibenik. In it’s earliest times, Primošten was situated on the islet close to the mainland. During the Turkish invasions in 1542, the islet was protected by the walls and towers and a draw bridge connected it to the mainland. When the Turks retreated, the draw bridge was replaced by the causeway and in 1564 the settlement was named Primošten. The town is built ... read more

Just a thought - different fields, different grasshoppers, different seas and different fish. Is that not what holidays are all about? Seeing the same thing but in a different light. Seeing new things as well. Where is Suzy today? Sitting in the sun at Camping Krka in between Skradin and Sibernik. So it's Dobra Dosli to the blog today. When we arrived we were greeted like old friends by the daughter of the campsite owner. My English is poor she said. Wow I wish my Croatian was that good. She asked if we wanted sun or shade. She laughed when we said sun and told us all British wanted sun. It appears that an English couple come here every year for a month at a time and want the same sunny spot. We are now sitting ... read more

Geo: 43.729, 15.9056We also traveled to Sibenik today to see the Cathedral of St. James. Construction began in 1431 taking 105 years to complete. The delay was produced by the Turks attempting to overrun the area and plague. The outside is fairly average, so no pictures, while the interior is a little better. The aspect we were most impressed with were the statues carved out of wood, one of which we include. We would be remiss not to include Bird's most impressive shoehorn of HP parking yet. And no Baby Bird and Doozer we did not listen to your favorite songs Cotton Fields and King of the Road as we composed this.... read more

Sebinik Croatia 9th June 2015 Southern Germany - You know about East Germany – Well it was a Socialist experiment that took over 40 years to prove itself a failure. Well here we are in Southern Germany. Most people know it as Croatia. Maybe its an experiment to extend German influence. But all I have seen is Germans. German speaking people – German Car - German Motorhomes – German supermarkets. The bigger supermarket players here are Lidl, Kaufland, and Bila - all German with 2 other players of interest being Konzum ( a Croatian company) and a Plodine a joint venture Croatian and an Australian company. The good French wine is kept at home I think by the French. Italian wine was available in some of the supermarkets near the Italian border. But yesterday we could ... read more
