It's always a bit slower waiting for 20 people to get up and get going in the morning, but the sun is always there to enjoy while you're waiting! It's a bit different travelling with this many other people, because we are usually go, go, go, but it's a nice change of pace. Once we got ourselves organized this morning, the whole lot of us drove about an hour north-west of Split, to the Krka National Park. This national park is home to what is thought to be the best waterfall in Europe. The park had many different waterfall cascades and crystal clear blue water. It was very idyllic, aside from the crowds of people that were visiting.
The water was just so enticing that we decided to go for a swim in one of the swimming areas. Usually one thinks of glacier water when it's this blue, and it certainly did feel that cold! The area that we swam in had few moderately sized waterfalls, and the water flow was quite strong. The floor under the water was quite rocky so it was difficult to manoever about without falling, so staying somewhat dry was not an option. Some from
our group decided to swim out to a rock that was sitting close to the waterfall and it looked much easier than it was. We both decided we wanted to swim up there too, which in retrospect was not a good idea because A. we are not in that good of shape, 2. Mike isn't a good swimmer, C. Elysia had a camera in her hand so really couldn't use all her strength. We made it almost 3/4 of the way out to the rock, but the current was so strong that it was really making us tired. Mike was starting to panic a bit and he kept thinking how he would not be able to help Elysia if she needed help because he was struggling too so he turned back. Elysia too felt like she was starting to get tired, and was worried that if she couldn't quite make it to the rock and have a bit of a rest there, she wouldn't make it back so she turned around too. I think we both can probably say that it was one of the scariest experiences we've had. Elysia remembers feeling really tired on the way back and it
was a good thing she had thought it through and turned back while she still had the energy to do so. The picture we could have taken from the rock was really not THAT important. Another girl in our group that was near us needed help too and asked Mike, but he couldn't. Luckily another guy in our group was able to help her get back. It turns out that the 3 of us weren't the only ones that felt that way- only 4 made it to the rock and a bunch of us who tried felt really lucky that we made it back safely. They really should have a warning sign there! Despite almost drowning, we did have a lot of fun in the water, and it was very refreshing!
Anyways, the rest of the day went without any problems. We sat in the sun by the waterfalls a bit and did a walk through the park to see the other cascades and then we went home. That night, we had some wonderful friends make a nice dinner for us and we all sat out on the balcony again and ate together. We sat there for a long
time and had some drinks and enjoyed the beautiful night.
