Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy. On train from Frankfurt to Brussels (I think..). The platforms for the train to Brussels were rather awkward so there is a good chance that I am headed to Amsterdam at the moment, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes haha. I’m pretty sure I was where I was supposed to be. This layover in Frankfurt went MUCH better than the last nightmare here..haha (I’m still ticklish, and not a security threat, no matter what the Germans say). Anyways, I ended up meeting this girl from Alberta who was on an “around the world” tour by herself for 8 [View Full Entry]

Thought we’d detour past the beaches of Dunkirk to pay respect to the many lives lost in the battles. What was here was obviously destroyed in the wars and quickly rebuilt in the fifties. Now days it’s a holiday town that’s stuck in a 50’s time warp (though it’s a dreary place for a holiday now). And the wind…trying to make lunch from the boot of the car in gale force wind is a mission, while the kids got sand burn on the wide sandy beaches we took refuge in the car and watched the wind blowing people and dogs off [View Full Entry]

J' [View Full Entry]

We made our way from Torquay to Dover which was quite a drive. I think it took about 5 hours. Our ferry wasnt until 4am the next morning so we stopped at a reststop and had a few hours sleep. Boarded the ferry which only took 90 mins to cross the English channel. Arrived in Calais, France then started driving towards Belgium. We stopped at a rest stop on the way for a bit of a sleep cos we were quite tired. When we woke up I realised that I had left the headlights on so the battery was dead flat. [View Full Entry]

We made our way from Ghent to Antwerp, Belgium which was a nice short 45 min drive. Found a great campsite on the opposite side of the Schelde river to the City. The weather was really nice and hot so we hopped on the bikes and rode over to the city. We had to go down a large elevator to a tunnel below the river then ride across to the other side. Was really quite cool. We just walked around the city and had a few beers down by the river in the sun. We then went to a really busy [View Full Entry]

Well, today I got my test back. I didn't do amazing, but I didn't fail. I got above average in the class so no complaints here. We also got a new teacher for class. I didn't realize that I would have to deal with 2 professors from the University of Florida. Anyway, this one isn't too bad. I'll get over it. On Thursday night, my host sister, Dadou, her sister's boyfriend, Mike, and I went to Delirium. It's a world famous bar here in Brussels. They offer 2,004 beers. There is a giant book that lists all the beers. We chose [View Full Entry]

Erasmus

they are not fake

Moving on from Buenos Aires actually meant going back to lovely Uruguay, to spend some last few days there with all the wonderful people I met here. Goodbyes are always sad, which is why I am not going to elaborate - only this much: I did consider staying here, for various reasons - lovely people, Candombe, Grappamiel, my spanish is better than my french, Boris the cat, Redes is great, my housemates are great....basically, I will miss being here. But I considered only very briefly, because of course I have a whole variety of reasons to go back to Brussels - [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! It’s Monday night here in London and we’re relaxing after a long a busy weekend! I booked a weekend trip for us both to Bruges in Belgium as part of Robs birthday present. We had to get up at the unfortunate hour of 5.30am and make our way to the coach stop for a 7am departure. I don’t really know what we expected but in the end there was only 19 people on our tour, which was good for the space factor on the coach but it would have been a bit more lively with some more people. There [View Full Entry]

I had never got the idea of putting mayonnaise on hot chips, it was always tomato sauce, but after getting some fries from the main square in Brugge with the different kind of mayonnaise to what we have in Australia it makes sense. Pretty tasty. My few days in Brugge were pretty good. Got there late-ish and didnt see much the first night despite the sun being up until 10:30pm, ran into some Aussies in the main square and chatted to them for a while then went back to the hostel and crashed out. Jumped on a canal cruise the next [View Full Entry]
