Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.

We facebooked a couple people: parker's french sister and janna. our friend from the american bar the previous night. French sister was off in germany and unable to help. Janna generously opened her home. She is living in paris for the summer while she does biochemical chemistry (something about yeast). She stayed in our hostel one night after some difficulties with mother. Luckily for us, she opened her home. We hiked on over (it was only 20 minutes away from our hostel) and headed up five sets of stairs to reach their flat. We had such a great conversation with janna [View Full Entry]

Saturday.. We went to the Van Gogh museum earlier in the morning. The museum is a smaller museum but it contained a lot of information about Van Gogh. It was interesting to read about his life, I learned many things about he I did not previously know. I was a little disappointed that many of favorite pieces he has done were not there. Although I have a new favorite, Blossoming Almond Tree. It was fascinating to see the actual work done by someone so famous. The actual brush strokes of all his pieces were breathtaking!! We then proceeded to the Tulip [View Full Entry]

Happy late Fourth of July!! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and got to see beautiful fireworks (because I didn't :( ). I'm sure you are wondering what I did for the holiday because I know the title does not give it away! I went to England, London to be exact. I had to get up super early on Friday morning to get to the train station at 6:30 in the morning!! I didn't expect to go through border patrol or customs to get into the UK. We didn't have to for France and the UK is part of the [View Full Entry]

Our whistle-stop tour of Belgium ended with a brief trip to Antwerp-on realising our train to Amsterdam went through the city, we couldn't resist stopping off there to see the location of Rob Lee's famous hat-trick of headers in NUFC's return to European football in 1994 (well, famous to people in Newcastle, anyway!) ;o) Our train was at 7:30am and it was a double-decker, which I found quite exciting! Why don't we have them in England?! We were slightly delayed, arriving in Antwerp at 8:15am, and so after storing our luggage, it was a rush into the city to see what [View Full Entry]

After a busy first day of the holiday, we were up at 7am fully rested and ready to do our first bit of Interrailing! Our hotel was only about a five minute walk to Lille Flandres Station, and in our ever-lasting panic of things going wrong, we were there about half an hour early to make sure our train was on the board and we knew exactly where we needed to go. Admittedly, we had gotten there early in the hope of finding breakfast too...but soon realised that would be a rather fruitless search given it was so early on a [View Full Entry]

After our detour to Ghent, it was onto the main destination of the day: Brussels. The train journey was only half an hour, and again very easy. We amused ourselves on the journey by watching two middle-aged women who had apparently never been on a train before and just looked completely out of their depth-the concept of stations, luggage racks and all the general train stuff that you can think of were just completely alien to them! One of them looked like she'd had copious amounts of plastic surgery, so maybe all the botox had messed with her brain...I don't know, [View Full Entry]
