Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy. day two we got started around 10am after a late night of searching left us weary from the night before this time we were headed into Bruges. this is a really cute town and if your going to head anywhere in belgium i suggest you head there. it reminded me a lot of Lourdes, where a lot of the town is based on tourism, but then again, i've yet to be anywhere in europe, where tourism isnt a large part of the experience and infrastructure. whatever so imagine the old cobble stone streets and large gaudi buildings complete with gothic influences [View Full Entry]

 Europe » Belgium » Hainaut » Charleroi
Bonjour toute le monde After these past few days i cqn only say that Belgium is amazing. I got picked up from the airport by my familly francais, Julie and three men from my host club, They all were happy to see me and i was happy to see them too, i was a little scared that no one would be there to greet me. they all greeted me with one kiss on the cheek. I was assured into their very nice car with my two huge suitcases. Then they drove me to Julies parents house to drop Julie off. THeir [View Full Entry]

In June 2008 my sister and I set off on a Bike and Barge tour - since while on our trip we were not able to make postings to our Travel Log, I have decided to create an "after the fact" travel log ~ we want to encourage anyone that has not been to Belgium or the Netherlands to have no fear - it was GRAND!! In Brussels...
As they say here in Brussels, Bonjour! Yes, apparently they speak French (and Flemish) here in Belgium...I did not know that until we got here! This is the first city I've every been in where French is one of the main languages spoken, and I've learned more French in the last two days than I ever managed to learn German. And by that, I mean I can now say 2 things: merci, and au revoir. Hey, thats more German than I ever really managed to pick up! We are now in Brussels (and by 'we' I mean Bethany, Stephen and myself) [View Full Entry]

Beer-aan-botje The story so far Some time ago now I knew I wanted to go off and do something again, first it was backpacking then a campervan and then I came full circle and settled on a child hood dream of a sailing boat. I started my search and the boat for me became less of a reality, as the more boats I saw the more features I wanted in the boat of my dreams one thing was certain, steel boats are a lot more common in Holland, So off I went in a cloud of smoke to the land of [View Full Entry]

The story so far part two

 Europe » Belgium » Limburg
Just enough time for a shower before I go and meet my date, as with all ladies she is late, but soon she joins me in the bar and we go for a walk around the town, Romance bloomed. After a few more days on the road and a lot of boats looked at, That first boat of the road trip was still top of the list so I went back for both the boat and the girl. I did a deal and agreed the work I wanted done and spent the rest of my stay: you guessed it, with the [View Full Entry]

Europe » Belgium » East Flanders » Gent
we needed a break from the big cities. and gent was perfect. we were welcomed by lovely sisters jolien and cynthia. very friendly. perfect english. and of course they speak dutch and french as well. jolien showed us around her house, a lovely retro place. fleamarket finds in every nook. but tastefully put together. eclectic. i can see my place looking like this. she has an attic and a basement, a water closet. a BACKYARD. now that's a change from paris. her beautiful cats alain and dalida. a famous french duet sung by the two. alain currently purring my lap. he's [View Full Entry]

Bruges
Bruges
The tower that overlooks the markt square (see the movie)
Well we finally made our fist trip across the ditch to Europe. Yes a weekend in Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp and we are impressed. Our trip started on Friday morning 7am at St Pancras Station, where we boarded the Eurostar. It was a sharp contrast to airports, we arrive 30 minutes before departure not 3 hours, check in is relatively easy and with in 20 minutes you are sitting in the train ready to leave. The only hiccup was secrurity, who took my swiss army knife because it was considered dangerous in the present London climate (there is a knifing every [View Full Entry]

We are now having a wonderful evening with the London cousins. Jennie met us and Josie and Sarah had cooked tea.The older girls are showered and out to meet 'locals'. Catriona is dying after last night's tough train trip so she's off to bed. I am enjoying the luxury of washing some kit out and getting it dried. We were so exhausted after the night Berlin - Bruxelles train that arrived at 6am! We visited the Grand Place and Mannekin Pis by 8am and then sat drinking coffee and reading until the Cinema opened and we could slink inside to sleep. [View Full Entry]
