Belgians I’ve met have said Brussels is surprisingly sketchy and that’s certainly the impression I had venturing out from Midi Station. It didn’t seem fitting for the capital of the EU, though I suppose some would claim it is fitting. But once in the city center the scene shifts to a high concentration of waffle stands, chocolate shops and Delirium umbrellas. And architecture that rivals the other great capitals of Europe, in particular the incredible Grand Place: https://youtu.be/ZtXNropBqUM It’s been awhile since I’ve seen such ostentatious spoils of colonialism. I wonder what the second generation of recent immigrants will think of some of the statues around the city. In contrast, the EU diplomatic buildings are uninspiring. But it’s fun to walk around the area under the gaze of security and picture what big decisions the suits ... read more

I took a cheap RyanAir flight from Zaragoza, met up with my partner Peggy in Brussels and caught the next train to Bruges, just an hour away. Bruges is a small city but swells from heavy tourism. It would be interesting to know how much of its popularity is a result of the movie In Bruges. The cobblestone streets wind along canals, over every type of drawbridge imaginable and through ancient archways. Every window box and bridge hanging pot overflows with flowers and the town is spotless. All of this makes for a picture-perfect scene at every corner. My photos don't do it justice. Our BnB was in a historic home and was like staying in an antique shop, which was lovely except anytime we delicately creaked up 3 flights of stairs and fumbled with skeleton ... read more

Bruges Belgium December 2021, all booked up and ready for a train journey from Newcastle upon Tyne UK to Bruges Belgium. Three nights away in beautiful old city. Omicron hits and plans are delayed until.......... March 2022, our changed arrangements go ahead. On a train leaving a little later in the morning from Newcastle than we would like, but all in hand. The trip to London is on a new Azuma train. All is on time despite stops in Durham, Darlington, Northallerton, York, Doncaster, Newark, Peterborough before our arrival at Kings Cross. The Eurostar welcomes us, takes us under la Manche and treats us well, arriving at Brussels Midi at 6pm. The final leg. I’d cancelled our tickets from Brussels to Bruges because the previously made timings were out of kilter with our change arrangements, but ... read more

Here we are, the last blog of our little European trip to Belgium, Italy and Luxembourg. January in Italy is truly beautiful. But you may wonder why we came to Belgium in January in the middle of a covid surge. Well, beside seeing many friends, I had to apply for a long term visa for our next stop. The only place I could do so is actually in Belgium as I'm carrying a Belgian passport. That's one of the trick when you are constantly on the road, getting a visa for some country just can mean a compulsory trip back to your place of citizenship. Event was slightly stressful due to the amount of paperwork. But job done, we dropped the documents early January, we just had to wait for the full two weeks to get ... read more

Here we are, welcome to 2022! Been on the road for 10 weeks, so now that we are back at home I finally take the time to put my travel blogging in order. We were supposed to fly out on the 1st of January, doing Durban-Joburg-Frankfurt-Brussels. This time, I'm the one who tested positive on Covid finding the result late evening on the 31st December. What a way to finish an amazing 2021! Well, I had zero symptoms, fully vaccinated, so it was just a question of being patient, and not to spread it around! Good news, in SA, you just isolate and as long as you are ready to pay for another test, nobody stop you to speed up the process to check if you have turn to negative. So I did my second attempt ... read more

We had an early morning, 6:30 am. 1. We wanted to see the kids before they left for school and 2. Tobias had early morning meetings and Biggie had to work, and 3. We had a long train ride (3 trains) to Brussels. Tobias took us to the station and helped us with our bags, got us pointed in the right direction and we were off. As written in an earlier blog, we were headed to Brussels to visit our foreign exchange family. I must digress here. Pascaline came in the summer of 1979, Clayton was about to turn 2. Pascaline was probably 18 or so. We enjoyed Pascaline and invited she and any family members to visit and they invited us to Belgium. In 1981 we were heading for the middle east and were able ... read more
