I can’t believe I checked out of my Heilige Geest apartment today. So sentimental. The guy from the Guesthouse came today to inspect my room & give me my security deposit back around 9 am. From there, Dad & I took a taxi to our hotel in Brussels. (Since our flight leaves tomorrow at noon, we figured it would be wisest to just get a room for the night before in order to not have to get up at the asscrack of dawn to get to the airport in time). We opted for the cab due to the copious amounts of bags that we had - 3 giant suitcases, 2 wheelie carry-ons, Dad’s briefcase, & my backpack. That train ride would have been interesting… The cab from Maastricht to Brussels was only 160 Euros, so figuring ... read more

June 1 - 7, 2010 Bruges, Belgium This is not intended to be an advertisement, but I'm sure Christophe (landlord) would not mind if I expounded on our home for six nights in Bruges. Casa Brujas is located right on one of Bruges' many canals and is less than a five-minute walk to almost anything including the town square. The house is a delight and was perfect for our sleeping arrangements of two parents, a brother, and a sister. Although my sister and I had to share the third floor, we had a modicum of privacy and became good roommates. That is my sister looking out the second story window where you could find her often during the day hooting at some cute guy. Check it out if you ever plan to stay in Bruges -- ... read more

Today we woke to rain and my head was not feeling the best so I went back to bed after breakfast! A rare happening for a clergy person on a Sunday morning. After some rest I felt much better and we headed out mid-afternoon for a Sunday drive out in the country. We drove to the North Sea and I put my toes in the water, we walked the beach and the SUN appeared! After our walk we decided to head to Holland since we were so close to the border and discovered the lovely city of Sluis. It is beautiful and it was so fun to watch the people strolling on a Sunday evening. We ate outside and my brother enjoyed the must have food here, mussels. I sampled a few and that was enough ... read more

Friday, June 4, 2010 We stayed in Bruges today. We considered a barge ride on the canal from Bruges to Damme but it sounded too involved. We took the 30-minute canal boat ride in Bruges instead. We learned that the canals freeze occasionally and they have been able to ice skate from Bruges to Holland. After the ride Mom and Tricia shopped while Dad and I researched the train to Brussels. Tricia and I prepared dinner at home and tried to create a restaurant-like experience for Mom and Dad. They seemed to enjoy it though Dad probably wondered where his bread and starch were. After dinner they went to bed as I walked the streets until midnight taking pictures of Bruges at dark. Those follow.... read more

My day started with a Hot Air Balloon going over our home away from home , you can check out the photo. Right before our breakfast prepared by Dad we lost our electricity. After some texting with the home owner "the company" turned the power back on and we were off for our day. I am savoring the hot showers this week before we get to Congo on Monday! We stayed in Bruges today and enjoyed a canal ride this morning. I truly felt like the official tourist as I ducked going under the lower canals! The town was alive with activity today as the weekend officially begins! Mom and I did some shopping and then had a "mother/daughter" lunch on the square and watched all the action. We met up with Dad and Charlie and ... read more

I'm now into the 2nd month of my sabbatical and finally getting to my travel blog. I left Waterloo on May 18 and enjoyed 4 wonderful days in Philadelphia. I'll include some photos from that time as well. Now I'm finishing Day 2 in Bruges, a charming city with much to enjoy. We're staying at Casa Brujas, a private home that we're renting for the week. Today we enjoyed the Markt, Belfort (all 366 steps), Burg Square, and a great dinner at Narai Thai. It is now 10:40 pm and it is just now dark ! Tomorrow Waterloo, Belgium and the Royal Africa Museum at Tervuren.... read more

The weather today was amazing which helped our sightseeing -- you will see clear blue skies in the photos. Bruges is a magical city. The people are very friendly and receptive to tourists. Today's highlight was probably climbing the 366 steps up the Belfort Tower. I was not sure Mom and Dad would be up for it but they never skipped a beat agreeing to do it. They are very game travelers. I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking. It's getting late here and we need to get off early tomorrow for Atomium, Terverun, and Waterloo. I'll get to drive my black Mercedes diesel again.... read more

Tuesday, June 1, 2010 Thank you for all the comments -- even before any entries had been posted! We're thankful we made it to our destination. It is hard to think we last rested our heads in a bed Sunday night in Malvern. I'm sorry I'm too tired to say much tonight but I'll plan to make up for it later. It's quiet out on the street as the sun is now almost down. I am in the living room with one of four floor to ceiling windows open to let in the cool night air. The other travelers have settled in for the night. Love, CE... read more

Bruges is the perfect weekend getaway. It seems to accept the fact that it is a tacky, touristy place and embraces it. It seems that every shop in town is for tourists. So many chocolate shops, lace shops, touristy restaurants, you would be forgiven for thinking that nobody actually lives in Bruges and its only a place for tourists to visit. The city is what it is because of its brilliant canal system, in some ways much prettier than Venice, the canals appear clean and give you the best view of the brilliant gothic architecture that Bruges has to offer. We rode the canal boat for half an hour which takes you all around the small city. The ancient bridges over the canals are great, as are the cobble-stoned streets and horse and carraiges that go ... read more
