Ten weeks, 13,784 kilometers and 17 Countries later we returned the van on Friday. We were both very upset to be saying goodbye, as it has been an amazing adventure and probably the only time we will be free to travel for that long without any plans. The van definitely had its fair share of problems (we had to get a few jump and push starts over the last couple of weeks) but that didn't manage to deter away from the great time we had in Europe. Europe is definitely set up for camping, and it was such an easy way to get around. Surprisingly the Dutch were always the most common nationality to see at a campsite- generally making up around 60% of the population. In our last week in the van we headed to ... read more

Well, we finally made it to Brussels after a 8 1/2 hr coach ride - which included a ferry ride from Dover, England to Belgium. Now, I usually don't mind buses, but this bus...well, it stunk. And after several hours of restless "sleep" and stinky fumes, we were glad to be able to get out on the ferry (aka cruise ship) for about 2 hrs! We have ferries in Washington. In Europe, ferries are cruise ships. They have 6 or 7 levels for cars, buses, trucks, etc, a food court and lounge/sleep area, and a floor dedicated to a casino. Whattttt?! Why don't ferries back home have sleeping areas? Well, once we got into Brussels, we definitely had a bit of a shock trying to find where it was we needed to go. Also, at that ... read more

Bruges - day 1 We all arose much brighter and earlier than previous mornings (breakfast finishedmat 10am so normally we made it down at 9:50) but today the bus left at 8am.... I am used to early starts back home but travelling is helping me appreciate a good sleep in. I dragged my re-packed backpack to the bus and met my bus buddy Fiona whom I had partied with in Paris. :-) We had a stop at an amazing french servo....amazing you ask. How could a servo be amazing? Well there was a freshly baked pattisery, a grocery store selling dehli type delicasies and had a free microwave in case you needed it, another eatery with french pasteries, cooked meals, fresh ham and cheeses, fresh fruit and yoghurt, a yummy french boy behind the counter....whoops! Hehe, ... read more

Brugge - surely one of Europe's bona fide tourist magnets, and a must see for anyone keen on medieval architecture? Well yes, if you are not put off by the throngs of tourists and relatively high prices, this compact town must surely rank in the top 3 of any visitor to Belgium's itinerary. So what is it precisely that constitutes the city's main draw cards, and why is the place held in such high esteem? Well, to put it mildly, Brugge is a tourist magnet of sizeable proportions, and never really fails to attract visitors in most seasons, but essentially, the city is an enclave of medieval-style architecture and a walkable, manageable town which perhaps only comes close to testing any visitor's patience level when its streets are too chock-full of tourists to enjoy its full ... read more

After Dan Gent made the big decision of asking Em to marry him, he then made a crazy request in asking me to be his best man. It was a request I was honoured to accept, and of course along with a host of surely important things that I'd have to do there was one task that stood head and shoulders above all the others – organising the stag do!! After a few early ideas were rejected (apparently a motorcycle trip through Vietnam is just TOO dangerous 6 weeks before a wedding!!), we settled on living life as rock stars for 3 and a half days by hiring a rock band tour bus to take us on a road trip to Amsterdam and Brugges!! The only slight snag was that we were pretending to be a ... read more

Greetings! (of the Merry kind) This time our travels took us on a day trip to Bruges (Brugge), Belgium. Craig won a day trip at a travel expo that we went to, so off we went! Bright and early. Departure time was 6:30am from London, by coach. Ferried to France, then continued onto Belgium. When we got to Bruges, we had about 5hrs to explore the town. We started with the traditional Belgium Waffle. AMAZING! (I should note here that a lot of what we did was eat + drink) Nutella and whipped cream waffle to share = great start to the trip! The town was beautiful. So festive, with every store getting into the Christmas Spirit. There were horse drawn carriages transporting people through the town, toy stores, lace shops, chocolate stores (every 3rd shop!!) ... read more

Dreaming spires, the Venice of the North, stepped roofs, a city built on wool. All words that describe Brugges a beautiful medieval city with a history of a school of painting known as the Flemishstyle which gained world renown. Brugges is considered as the most intact of all medieval cities with a 13th century belltower complete with a carillion of 48 bells. I loved Brugges a delightful city full of canals and bridges, higgledy piggledy cobbled alleyways and streets. Calling it the Crown Jewel of Belgium is an understatement. Bruges was a unique city, small enough to be inviting and large enough to be beguiling. Fascinating with its brickwork that looked like streaky bacon, light bricks representing the fat and the red bricks the lean meat of the bacon. I would recommend a trip on the ... read more

After two hours of sitting in London traffic on a Friday afternoon I turn to the passenger in the back of the car and jokingly ask if she has her passport. Al and I both laugh at the crazy thought that someone would have forgotten to bring their passport on a trip over the channel, but alas, Belinda didn't have hers. We turned around and collected it and after our third trip through the infamous Catford Giratory we were actually on our way to Bruges. The drive to Bruges (when you ignore our detour) was simple, with the worst part being the heavy traffic in London. We took the ferry from Dover to Calais and eventually arrive in Bruges at 1am having driven through the UK, France and Belgium. We spent the next few days wandering ... read more
