I’m writing this blog sitting at Gate B11 at the Brussels International Airport about to board my United Airlines flight to Washington. I cannot believe that my time in Europe is over . It’s shocking how fast the past 5 months have passed. It feels like just yesterday that I was trying to manage around this airport with 2 giant (& heavy) bags incredibly jet-lagged & overwhelmed by the fact that I still had a 2-hour train ride to Maastricht. Funny how much easier traveling gets the more you do it… While I’m still feeling a little bit sick, I’m so happy that it’s not as severe as it was the other day. I have been taking some antibiotics that my doctor gave me as a precautionary measure (because I usually get sick in February). It ... read more

I can’t believe I checked out of my Heilige Geest apartment today. So sentimental. The guy from the Guesthouse came today to inspect my room & give me my security deposit back around 9 am. From there, Dad & I took a taxi to our hotel in Brussels. (Since our flight leaves tomorrow at noon, we figured it would be wisest to just get a room for the night before in order to not have to get up at the asscrack of dawn to get to the airport in time). We opted for the cab due to the copious amounts of bags that we had - 3 giant suitcases, 2 wheelie carry-ons, Dad’s briefcase, & my backpack. That train ride would have been interesting… The cab from Maastricht to Brussels was only 160 Euros, so figuring ... read more

Today, I woke up & felt like death. I literally didn’t sleep last night due to fever/chills/headache/throat ache, the whole 9 yards. Truly awful. I was supposed to meet Adnan & Carolina for lunch at 11:30 because it’s Carolina’s last day in Maastricht; however, I had to cancel. It’s really awful. I laid around for a while, & Dad came over & we packed up most of my stuff & cleaned my room a little bit. By about 1:30 I started feeling a little better, so hoping to salvage what remained of the day, Dad & I decided to take the boat down to the St. Pietersburg caves. The St. Pietersburg caves are located on the highest point in Maastricht close to the Belgian border. The caves were initially used by the Romans to mine limestone. ... read more

It was rainy & cold today, but Dad & I braved the weather & headed toward Aachen, Germany, which is about an hour & 10 minutes by bus from Maastricht. I figured that since I hadn’t been to Germany in my entire stay in the Netherlands, I should definitely check it out while I still had the opportunity. I had only been to Germany once (Hamburg), but I wasn’t totally impressed so I was hoping that this experience would change my mind. I’m still unsure how I feel about Germany, to be honest. I think it’s because the language is so intimidating. Even when being friendly & nice, it still sounds so harsh & cold. Aachen also didn’t have a lot of English speakers & my German is next to nonexistent. I think in total, I ... read more

My dad made it to Europe safely! It's so nice to have him here again. I'm glad that he caught the "Europe bug" because now that means that family vacations will be trips through the Old Country... Today was a beautiful day. It was sunny, 72 degrees with a slight breeze & no clouds in the sky. Needless to say, we decided to spend today outdoors! Dad, Carolina, & I decided to rent Vespas, which has been a dream of mine for quite some time now. I've always joked that I wanted a Vespa at home so I could take it to Thunder in the Valley (a festival that our town holds where bikers come from all over the US to show off their motorcycles). I also want a green helmet that says "sustainable development," since ... read more

Today is my 24th birthday. It’s awesome to get to celebrate it in Europe. I’ve had a few odd birthdays, including a birthday celebration at the Taos Indian Reservation in New Mexico, but never in Europe. It’s a nice treat. Despite the fact that I had an exam this morning (international development law), today was a fantastic day. The exam was in a different city (Meersen) so we had to take the train to get there. It took us about 5 minutes on the train, so it really wasn’t that bad. After the exam, I headed toward the train station. Ironically, Dad & I arrived at the train station from different directions at exactly the same time. Odd coincidence. It worked out well because we went from there to check into his hotel, grab some lunch, ... read more

Last week at this time I was blogging about Northern Europe. This week, I get to talk about Southern Europe. After many years of wanting to visit, I finally made it to Barcelona, Spain, to spend a few days relaxing with my Swedish friends before the finals period begins. I had never been to the Mediterranean before so I was really looking forward to it. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed. Barcelona is an amazing city situated between the mountains & the sea. It's perfect for people with many different interests - the city center itself has great cultural sites, shopping, & food, whereas the immediate surroundings offer outdoor activities to suit many different tastes. Culturally, Barcelona is really fascinating. It is the capital of Catalonia - an autonomous region of Spain. That being said, the ... read more

I spent the past couple of days in Oslo, Norway visiting my friend John-Rune. Up until this point, the furthest north I had ever been in Europe was Copenhagen, which happens to be one of my favorite cities in Europe; needless to say, I was definitely looking forward to what the rest of Scandinavia had to offer. In general, I had an amazing experience in Norway. The people are the nicest, Oslo is a nice city, & it's a genuinely great atmosphere (minus the fact that everything is expensive). Norway isn't a member of the EU; therefore, it's not a part of the Euro-zone so it uses its own currency (the Norwegian Krone). Right now, the exchange rate is about 1 USD for every 6 NOK. When I withdrew 1200 from the ATM, it freaked me ... read more

Since I was still on my "World War II-kick," today I decided to visit the Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum (National Liberation Museum) in Groesbeek. I had originally thought it was an easy train ride an hour north of Maastricht; however, I was wayyyyyy off. It took me 2 hours to get to Nijmegen by train, & then I had to take a 20 minute bus to Groesbeek. Since it took me forever to get there, I decided I had better make the most of my experience there. The museum itself is pretty cool. It looks like an old bunker & one part of the building looks like a parachute. While it was a nice museum, it certainly wasn't what I had expected. The informational movies that were playing in some rooms were only in Dutch (without English subtitles) ... read more

Today is May 8. That means that it's Victory in Europe (or "V-E") Day. On May 8, 1945, the Allies accepted the unconditional surrender of German forces, ending the war in Europe. This officially ended Hitler's Third Reich in Germany. When one studies World War II history, one always learns about fighting in North Africa, storming the beaches of Normandy, & the eventual capture of Berlin. For the most part, what seems to be missing is what happened between the time the Allied forces entered France in June 1944 & took Germany in April/May 1945. From September 1944 until the spring of 1945, Allied forces were in the Limburg region of the Netherlands pushing toward the German border. On September 14, Maastricht was the first Dutch city to be liberated by the Allied forces. In the ... read more
