28th Septmeber.....Passau to Linz...... The next day saw clouds and an occasional sprinkle of rain as I crossed the 'border' into Austria. No demands of passport anymore, instead you are welcomed by a sign that is in 4 different languages. The old custom house is now an art gallery and you don't have to change your money. I had a musical experience of a different kind yesterday. It was one of those magical moments that I tend to have when I am away by myself. I was riding along with my MP3 player on random which means I could have anything! Picture me approaching where the river does this big sweep around thing for which there has been signage for some time and which I have been expecting from the British Headmaster in my guide book. ... read more

Today we reluctantly left the beautiful mountain village of Halstatt, on a partly sunny morning with some delicious looking sandwiches from a cute bakery tucked into my "magic bag." We arrived in Salzburg to a very cold and windy day. Checked out a brewery, chocolate shops, and toured Mozarts birthplace, and the house where he lived. That was very interesting. By the way, we are staying in an old monastary, so I guess we will have to behave ourselves! We already had applestreudle with vanilla sauce for a snack before we set out on our explore!... read more

Greetings from Vienna! After Harold and I got settled we strolled about and found a cafe that had pastries. I chose the most decadent looking one and sure enough it was great! It was some kind of vanilla and cream layered affair with whipped cream on top and a layer of those little tart red berries. (lingonberries?) It was great. I have to hurry with this blog because we are going in search of more pastries right away! Yesterday we spent 5 and a half hours in the wonderful art museum! We saw the old masters, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Durer, Raphael, Caravaggio, and many more dating to the 14th Century! After we were pleasantly exhausted from that, Harold noticed another part of the museum that housed ancient stuff, so we wandered through there. We saw incedible ... read more

Well, this town is ALL about Mozart, beautiful mountains, and churches (kirches). I arrived here a little late in the afternoon. As soon as I found my hotel, I headed out to see the sites. I was about a 15 minute walk to the start of the city, but I found my way. As soon as I came to Mirabell gardens, I knew I wanted to stay an extra day. There is a lot to see here and I like it here. So, I saw as many sites as I could, the churhes, the Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg) which can be seen all over the city. There is the beautiful Salzburg Cathedral or Dom and Universitatskirche. Of course there is Mozart's birth house (Gerburtshaus) and his house he lived in as a child (Wohnhaus). There is ... read more

After a couple weeks of the TEFL course, I was ready to get out of Prague for a weekend and go somewhere new. One of the guys in my course was all about Vienna, so I decided to tag along. It was a lot different travelling with an "adult' because we actually got a nice "pension" and ate at "restaurants" compared to my typical trip where I sleep on an overnight bus and only eat food from grocery stores. It was fun to splurge a little though, and Vienna was really nice.... read more

Vienna, the most cultural-rich and artistic place in the world, has been enjoying high reputation for its theatre, music and opera. It once was the political center of the Europe ruled by the pan-German Habsburg Empire till World World I. You will find the finest collections of artpieces in the National Gallery, well-preserved Romanesque and Baroque-style architectures in the city and the world-class theatre houses, the best musicians, opera artists and orchestras in Vienna. Classical music would not be as flourishing as today without Vienna which cultivated the world-renowned classical music founders such as Mozert, Beethoven and Johann Strauss II to produce ever-lasting masterpieces being amused for generations. I was so lucky having a chance to watch the high standards opera "Carmen" and "Romeo and Juliet" during the stay. Walking in the streets, you can listen ... read more

Vienna didn't really interest me much, and the main reason I went this past weekend was as a stopover for Budapest. In the end I was justified in it not interesting me much, but I'm still glad I've seen it. I arrived with a whopping 8 other people on Friday morning from an overnight train which wasn't too bad, but I was staying at a different place and I was the only one who made our planned rendezvous, so I was by myself for the whole time in Vienna. The first day I mostly walked around and inside the ring, where most of Vienna's old buildings and attractions are. I have a feeling that going inside the buildings would have been cool but I'm cheap and short on time. There's a huge church in the middle ... read more

In the morning we woke up and were treated with the hotel’s “authentic” German breakfast, which is actually fairly large and filling. It is normal to eat eggs, meat, cheeses, fruit, and bread. It was very nice for us students because then we did not have to buy our breakfast. There was Nutella in excess! J Then we met up as a group and left for Salzburg. Since we were going to a nice dinner later that evening, and would not be back at the hotel to change clothes, most of the people wore their nice clothes all day around Salzburg. I did not want to get my nice clothes sweaty, so I brought with a backpack with clothes in it to change into at the dinner. But the downside to this is that in all ... read more

September 14 - 16 This heading looks as though it is only two days - but I can assure you that it is not! Firstly, while Gail and Jeremy and Ian and Chris all started very early on 14 Sep in time to arrive at Dover by 0700 hrs, Camilla and I started the previous afternoon and camped near Dover so that we did not have a rush for the boat. We all met up on the dockside as planned for a punctual if uneventful crossing of the Channel. After refuelling in Calais for all the essentials, including diesel, we set off for Ostend, turned right and motored through Belgium and on into Germany. Rather dull scenery and boring roads and by late afternoon we started to run out of time. We had set ourselves a ... read more
