Vienna didn't really interest me much, and the main reason I went this past weekend was as a stopover for Budapest. In the end I was justified in it not interesting me much, but I'm still glad I've seen it. I arrived with a whopping 8 other people on Friday morning from an overnight train which wasn't too bad, but I was staying at a different place and I was the only one who made our planned rendezvous, so I was by myself for the whole time in Vienna. The first day I mostly walked around and inside the ring, where most of Vienna's old buildings and attractions are. I have a feeling that going inside the buildings would have been cool but I'm cheap and short on time. There's a huge church in the middle ... read more
Over past weekend I embarked on a 3 day, 3 night tour of a little piece of paradise in Europe. My planned itinerary included Zurich, Luzern, Interlaken, and Bern. I arrived in Zurich's main station at about 1 p.m. on Friday and so it began. Zurich at first struck me as a really busy business city, which it is to an extent, but the right spots are also very peaceful. The city is built around a river flowing out of lake Zurich, and I spent a lot of the time I was there within view of the river. There are multiple clocktowers and a larger church with two towers that are convenient landmarks in walking around. The older part of town close to the banks of the river had many old alleys which led to hidden ... read more
This is my last night in Los Angeles, and after I'm done here I'm going to pack up my stuff and head to San Francisco after work tomorrow. From there it's off to Florida to Frankfurt to France. Los Angeles is just so big that I still don't feel like I know enough about the city to really know what it's like to live there, but I'll do my best. I think that I could live in L.A. and be happy, but the traffic is bad enough to discourage me from doing so, plus it's almost just too easy. Everything in the world is somewhere within an hour's drive, or three hours during the day. The weather is amazing but not as nice as San Diego, although anywhere close to the ocean is perfect and since ... read more
My first trip south of the border was certainly interesting. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures, and I really don't have much to say about it. I almost feel guilty for counting this as a trip to Mexico, but surprisingly I saw few other Americans, so I suppose it's different than being in San Diego. I was somewhat surprised that I didn't even have to show a passport to get in, and it was also very easy to get out, although I suspect being a US citizen helps in that process. I went with three people I didn't know 2 weeks ago, and it was a fun group. After a quick taxi ride to Avenida Revolucion, the happening part of town, we had a dinner at a place that could have seemed mostly normal a few ... read more
This is a quicky because I didn't spend nearly enough time in San Diego to really get a good feel for it. The main purpose of the day trip was a Padres vs. Red Sox baseball game which the Padres won in front of a surprisingly Boston loving crowd. After a week in the low 80's in L.A., San Diego felt like an air conditioned city. Not that low 80's is horrible, but I'm already spoiled from this climate. The weather was high 60's and partly cloudy the whole time I was there, about 6 hours. I was expecting a modern city but found that it is quite old in many areas, and it has a really nice mix of old and new. That can be said about everywhere I've been so far in Southern California, ... read more
This is my blog. I used to hate the word "blog", but this is pretty sweet I gotta say. My first entry is a few days late, but on Sunday I had a few extra hours so I decided to make the trip to Manhattan Beach. Upon arriving in the city I first saw malls and shopping centers that could pass for Florida and I was unimpressed. After a turn down Manhattan Beach Blvd I thought I had arrived in a different country. Houses tightly packed on moderately steep hills right up to the beach front are all that exist as far as the eye can see. After driving around for 20 minutes not knowing where to park I was once again impressed by the underground metered parking garage I found which ended up costing ... read more
