I was only in Boston for a day before I took off for the Bahamas. The weather in Prague had been pretty nice, but the weather in Nassau was amazing! It was in the high 70's and low 80's the whole time I was there. I was working for a spring break travel company which was a lot of fun except for a few isolated incidents involving high schoolers throwing up on me....but to be living in the Bahamas for free....it was worth it.... read more

After 7 months, I said good bye to Prague for the last time as I made my way back to the States. I was sad to leave especially because the weather has been AMAZING; bright sun and flowers coming out already. It took me about 2 days total to get from Prague to Boston with a stop in London and a stop in New York City. I woke up in Boston this morning and it was snowing....welcome home....haha. Before I left, I got a chance to go on a day trip to Cesky Krumlov, which was amazing, although it was easy to see the tiny town was becoming more of a tourist destination...a mini-Prague...glad I went in the spring.... read more

March 7th 2008

What started as a day-dream at work, became a crazy reality last week. I started my trip with a visit to Dublin with some of my friends from Prague. A girl we met during our teaching course lives there now, so we stayed with her for a couple nights. Then I took my one-way flight to Finland! It seemed like a good idea at the time, but as I was landing in Tampere, I realized that having nothing planned was going to be more stressful than I thought. I knew that I had 6 days to get from Tampere, Finland back to Prague. I spent some time in Tampere before taking the train down to Helsinki for the night. I should probably begin by saying that it was freezing there. What did I expect? I'm not ... read more

I had a little trouble at the London Airport with my Passport so it looks like going back to the states in March is the right thing to do. The only problem with that, is that I finally have a steady income and I can tell what people are saying ( at least pretend to) when they talk to me. I had expected the weather in January and February to be cold and miserable, but it has been really sunny and yesterday was about 60 degrees F. So I am starting to wish I could stay longer, but I guess we will see what happens this summer. Another surprise was how sad I was to say "ahoj" to my students for the last time. It took a little while, but I have grown very fond of ... read more

Coming to America

After living in the Czech Republic for 5 months I was ready for a visit home. I flew from Prague to London on Friday night, got to Gatwick airport at midnight, made it to my friends’ house in Surrey by 1, and was on my way to a job interview in Cambridge the next morning at 7. Apparently it was Australia Day, and apparently that is a popular holiday in London. Then I flew to Detroit, had a 5 hour layover in the airport, which I spent gorging on American food at Chili’s and then took a tiny plane to Elmira. It was awesome to come back to the states and sleep in my bed(s) again. I also spent some time up at Saint Mike’s and surprised the ski team with a visit to their race ... read more

I finally put all those years of French class to good use this weekend. I took easyJet to Geneva from Praha for the weekend. For only about $60 for the roundtrip ticket, I had to. I spoke a lot of French, drank even more Orangina, and loved every second. I knew Geneva was close to the mountains, but I didn't realize how big they were. On the second day I was there, the clouds cleared up, and I had an awesome view of Mont Blanc and the French Alps to the south, across the lake. I had packed all my winter clothes and ended up wearing only a sweatshirt the hole time because it was so warm...between 0 and 5 C. Geneva was a lot smaller than I expected, so after checking out of my hostel, ... read more

On Saturday I went out to a really nice dinner party, which led to a really nice "regular party" which went all night. I got back to my flat at 7AM and was on my way to the ski race at 715AM... I got some sleep on the bus ride, but that was about it! We got to Liberec really easily from Prague and then we had to take another bus up the mountain. The Jizerska 50 is a 50km ski race which is a really big deal in Central Europe. The weather was awesome and it was nice to get out of the city and see some good skiers in action!... read more

Winter in Praha

January 9th 2008

It is finally winter in Praha. We had our first "big" snowstorm on saturday night, and we got about 3 inches at the most. Prague looked amazing with a fresh coat of snow, but since all the sidewalks are made of stone, they dont plow them...or do anything to them actually. So all day Saturday and Monday, people were shuffling and sliding all over the place. Another example of "the Czech way" I guess. Christmas in Prague was really good although, there was no snow, and it wasn't even that cold, so it didn't really feel like Christmas. I went to the National Theater to see.....a ballet. I was hesitant at first, but for 30kc, I couldn't say no. And in case you were wondering, 30kc is the same price as a coffee. Yes, our tickets ... read more
