Woke up that day feeling nervous because in a few hours I would be flying off the ground in a parachute and that terrified me because I am scared of heights. People were talking about the masked party the night before at the bar which was apparently a lot of fun. Some back story, Venice is known for its Masks which allowed in the old days people of nobility and peasants to go to parties. So last night's parties people had bought masks in Venice and wore them to the party. The bus left fairly early that morning because we had a long ride to Austria and we had to be there shortly after noon for the optionals. We were just pulling out when I realized I had left my jacket which had my passport in ... read more

Geo: 47.2627, 11.3947 After purchasing the Innsbruck Card, we caught a tram into the city centre. First stop was to catch the Funicular Cable Car up Seegrube Mountain. We thought this was high up until we then caught the Patscherkofelbahnen Cable Car a further 1,000 metres up the mountain. Hang Gliders were jumping off a steep incline at the lookout almost in a procession. We then caught a further Cable Car up to the top of the mountain, some 2,500 metres above the city of Innsbruck. No wonder there was snow all around. It was unexpectedly warm though at the top today, being around 25 degrees. After coming down the mountain, we walked through the Old City and visited the Hopkirche. This Church contains the most renowned cenotaph in the western world, being the tomb of ... read more

Geo: 47.2627, 11.3947 We left Melk today bound for Innsbruck (Austria), roughly a four and a half hour drive. On the way we called in to see Mauthausen Concentration Camp, just outside of Linz. Mauthausen was classified as a so-called "category three camp". This was the fiercest category of concentration camp, and for the prisoners it meant "Rûckkehr unerwünscht" (return not desired) and "Vernichtung durch arbeit" (extermination by work). Mauthausen was chosen as a site for a slave labour camp because of the nearby granite quarry, and due to its proximity to Linz. The granite mined in the quarries had previously been used to pave the streets of Vienna, but the Nazi authorities envisioned a complete reconstruction of major German towns in accordance with the plans of Albert Speer and other architects of Nazi architecture, for ... read more

Something strange happens when people uproot themselves and move away from everything familiar. It creates an innate vulnerability in us. We become vulnerable to cultural differences, struggles of adapting to a new environment filled with new surroundings, faces, smells, language, schedules, foods, forms of transports, norms. Nothing is the same, yet everything is familiar. We end up taking comfort in the tiniest of things - like some good cheese, having a friend or family member email you, finding a goat in a park that makes you smile, or exploring an antique shop. This vulnerability sometimes brings on the worst of days. Something that would ordinarily be manageable can ruin a day - like that it’s uncomfortably windy, or a bus schedule is wrong, or we get horribly lost. Sometimes the vulnerability makes me fall apart over ... read more

I went hiking in the alps!! Innsbruck was amazing. It was kind of like estes park but in the alps so in a way better, just because it wasnt differrent. The Alps are beautiful in different ways then the Rockies. For one, everything is green because its not dry like it is in Colorado. They were smaller too, at leats in Austria. I didnt get to fully enjoy the Alps because my cold had gotten a lot worse by then. BUt i still made it a point to go hiking, although if you define hiking the way Demitri Martin defines hiking, which he defines it as walking where its ok to pee, then it wasnt hiking. I was still kinda in the city but on the outskirts of it, so there were a lot of people ... read more

Rumor has it there was an Austrian farmer who wanted to cross from Heiligenblut to Kals, not an easy route. Being quite drunk, he managed to get lost in the mountain mist but he was able to get to Kals because he could hear the church bell. Like all legends, there is probably a hint of truth behind the origin of the name of Austria's highest peak - Großglockner - which I summited Friday morning at 7:35 am local time. It was definitely an exhilarating combination of major adrenaline and being very much aware of the extreme exposure. I wanted to try for the 3798 meter summit when I was in Austria back in May but the weather was far from cooperative. I decided on a return trip from Turkey and bought a one way ticket ... read more

The Berliner Hutte is quite famous for its age and splendor. Its a huge hut and on this day it was completely full. We had hard time finding beds, but we were lucky as we are not as big as Germans ;) - that's what the reception told us and gave us a separate room at price of dorm beds. The room was indeed tiny and it was in a separate part of hut which is called winter house. The view from room was really great - glacier covered mountains and huge waterfall. We met some nice German couples and exercised our German with them. The food at hut was not bad. We also found out that bridge to next hut was also out and way was officially closed. So that made the decision that we ... read more

Day 3 of our hike was most difficult. The destination was a very famous and old hut called Berliner Hutte. As the name suggests, it was built by Germans, more than 100 years ago. To get there from Furtschaglhaus, we had to first get up a 3100m pass and then again get down to 2000m to the hut. Needless to mention, we were expecting spectacular views at the top of pass. We started our day early as we wanted to walk slowly, enjoying the views and not have to rush against time. The beginning of hike was on easier side, trail was well made and grade was not too steep. We decided to start without breakfast, and then stop on the way for some bread and peanut butter. That was kind of mistake. The valley was ... read more

We have been thinking about hiking in Austrian Alps for a while. The Berliner Hohenweg (meaning a hike at high altitute) was featured as one of the top 10 backpacking trips in backpacker.com magazine. That magazine has not let us down yet, so we decided to do part of this. The while trail is 7 - 10 days long, but we decided to spend 3 days on it + 1 day out of the mountains. The area is about 1 hr bus ride from Mayrhofen that ends at a lake. The lake is between 2 main mountain ranges, in a valley. Like almost every alpine lake in Europe, it has been dammed either for electricity or to prevent flooding. That of course takes away some beauty from it, but this dam is not so bad. While ... read more
