I'm sitting at home and finally got my blog running. The decision was made to write it in english in order to make it available for everybody. My Parents have a capable translator at home and for the parents in law it is a challenge i like to pose. They try to improve their english at the moment, so this should be good practice. Tomorrow we head to Japan. My girlfriend will stay for 3 and I for 5 weeks. Why is she leaving earlier? She has to attend university classes and I'm going to engage in lots of kendo for the last two weeks in Fukuoka, which were organised by Shinsuke Murakami, who helps me very patiently to improve my kendo. Our emotions switch between pleasant anticipation and nervousness. This time I'm the only ... read more

We continued on our drive from Munich into Austrian Tyrol. We made our first stop just outside of Innsbruck where we did Water Water Rafting, €38. The water was brutally cold, but we all seemed to have a good time. The group was divided into rafts and then the instructors took the rafters to jump into the water, to get used to the temperature. Then came the rapids. It was surreal watching everyone go down the rapids, until they became nothing but dots on the horizon. The whole process took the group two hours to complete, and then everyone showered quickly and changed so we could go bobsledding on the Olympic Track. Bobsledding cost €28, for one run down the track, I couldn't do it because of my neck, but from what I've been told, it ... read more

A little valley in Austria, Today we have driven out of Germany into a small dead end valley in Austria. We did a small hike only on the easy flat part, maybe 1 mile RT. At the end we have had a soup and enjoyed seeing the small cow barns where they collect the milk. After we have had our meal we realized that we have left our money way back in the car at the parking place. So I left Gloria as a ransom, and hiked back to the car and returned to get her out of hock. It is part of the adventure. This same day we have driven 10 miles before we realized we have left the video tapes behind at the house. So back we go. The pictures I send are of ... read more

Day 37: Innsbruck. I took a train through Switzerland with my face pressed to the window. Mountains and lakes and blue skies. Beautiful. I also ate Swiss chocolate because always. I got to Innsbruck and my couchsurfer met me at the train station. We went back to his flat, and I made lecso, which is a Hungarian dish. It tasted like home. And it was finally healthy non-carby food. Thank god. By the time we finished dinner it was late, so we went to bed. Day 38: Innsbruck. TODAY I HIKED AN ALP. I woke up, had breakfast, and tried to google hikes in Innsbruck. Seriously, why is it so difficult? My couchsurfer pointed me in a good direction to find trails, but he doesn't do a lot of hiking. On my way to a place, ... read more

Austria proved too enticing to leave as we spent most of July cruising the back roads of the eastern part of the country. We have crossed this area a couple of times before and always said there is more to see and do, so we did. Many of our campsites have been on farms or on ski lift parking areas. The farms are usually good value, have fewer campers and often sell their own produce eg eggs, milk, cheese and one site regularly baked streusel which was particularly nice. Some farms are perched on precarious hillsides which can be a challenge to drive to but often give sublime views. It’s funny how things vary from country to country. Austrian campsites are really cheap for washing and many offer free wifi yet there are few public motorhome ... read more

Bis denn.... read more

When Ralf suggested we spend some quiet downtime in the Alps, I knew I'd be in for an amazing treat but I could have never predicted or even now find words to describe just how breathtaking Austria is or the level of hospitality and service shown to us by everybody we encountered there. We stayed at the Seiwald Wellness Hotel. Typically the term "Wellness Hotel", I've learned, means a resort setting that offers spa and sauna services and onsite pool, various saunas, steam rooms, relaxation areas in a beautiful setting in nature. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, In the areas I have visited in Germany and now Austria, saunas are seen as places of healing and tremendous money and care is put into building these facilities. Seiwald Hotel was no exception. The setting was ... read more

They let the cows out for the first time this season and even took the new bull for his first walk outside. He is just 6 months old so has only known winter and has been in the stable the whole time. Peter had a job keeping him under control with a rope bridle as he already weighs more than 300kg and he liked the sunshine and freedom! Em stood up on the woodpile with Myriam to keep out of the way of all the cows. Especially the big 3 year old bull who weighs over 1000kg! On the car front, Renault have decided they need to take ours to a Renault dealer to fix it and will give us a hire car until it is ready – about a week or two. As we can’t ... read more

This morning Peter and Miriam invited us into Lienz to the local Saturday markets. We wandered through the stalls while Peter and Myriam shopped for some farm fresh vegies. Myriam met Michele in town, one of her friends from Paris and it was such a beautiful day that we all went to a café for morning tea. Peter wanted icecream so he shouted Em to one too – shaped like a snowman! Walking back through the markets, we bought some fresh bread and fruit and Myriam convinced us to buy some of the local pasta for tea – tortellini filled with garlic, herbs and mashed potato. Back to the farm for a late lunch and a bit of down time before Peter’s sister came over for afternoon tea and we were introduced. Em played for a ... read more
