MOUNTAINS! Austria, Germany and Slovenia Sat 7th Sept Innsbruck to Berchtesgaden 110 miles Heard the church bells chime at 5.00am, then loads of church bells at 6.00am, then cow bells from the cows along the lane at 7.00am so gave up and got up!! A beautiful morning after the heavy thunderstorm we had yesterday evening. After breakfast, opened my Birthday cards and presents including special nail varnish, earings and a kitch musical snow globe of Neuschwanstein Castle .......mmmmm. We carried along the valley on the B171 to Worgl. Such beautiful scenery with mountains both sides, huge massive peaks in the distance and lovely wooden chalet type homes and hotels with masses of coloured geraniums and petunias! Turned on to the 178 towards St Johann, steadily climbing all the time. Chris thought that the brakes felt a ... read more

Getting to Innsbruck felt like a major feat of planning after taking a train from Rimini to Bologna, a two hour wait, a train to Verona, a one hour wait and finally a three and half hour train in a closed compartment with no leg room and a Mexican family who did nothing to but talk to me and deed me nuts for the whole journey. Lovely people who were very keen to practise their English but all I wanted to do was look at the scenery. The journey through northern Italy and over into Austria was one of the most beautiful I have ever taken; the train cuts right through the mountains and goes over the Brenner Pass. The train stops in Brenner for official paperwork to be done and we were allowed to get ... read more

Innsbruck Austria 1 August 2013 We have been to Innsbruck before in 2002 with Pam’s sister Sheryl, so it has been interesting to revisit these cities. We drove in a recognized nothing. We made a weak attempt to find our hotel where we stayed, knowing it was near a railway station. We reasoned that it must have been away from the CBD. We remembered that when we sat in the bath we could look out at the snow-capped mountains. There was not a sign of snow this visit. We decided to park the Camper and ride our bikes into the city centre. This worked well. We had a good look around, had an iced coffee so we could do some people-watching. We got chatting to a ‘fellow-countryman’ from Holland who was testing his blood glucose.!!! The ... read more

Gretchen reckoned that the towns church bell chimed every quarter hour all night and so her nights sleep was disturbed while I slept like a charm! Despite our night in the 'cheap seats'the room rate did include breakfast across in the main hotel and a good one it was too. The car was still there despite what we thought might have been a demand for parking money from the old guy last night. With another cloudless sky we set off for a bit of a wander in the Bavarian countryside as it was only a short drive to our next accommodation had we gone direct. The town of Bad Tolz sounded an interesting place to visit and that would take us east from Peiting and we would then cross the border into Austria and to the village ... read more

We are now in Bavaria, in Fussen and have had two days of driving thru the mountains to enjoy the exquisite views and Bavarian cuisine. The weather has been sunny and warm leaving a heat haze in many areas. Good temperatures for walking and hiking, which we did yesterday to a SKYWALK near Scheidegg. The view from 1000 meters was phenomenal and of course the workout was interesting. We also found out how quickly and loudly the emergency vehicles respond to fire of any source here in the mountains. We have also found that at the end of many strenuous walks (hikes) here in Germany, one can find a well-deserved beer! Fussen is a fascinating location for photographing the high palace, monastaries, churches, ancient graveyards and of course the beautiful Lech river. Limited vehicle access ... read more

After a day full of hiking and climbing yesterday we decided to take a ride to Innsbruck, Austria. We were particularly interested in visiting this city because Matt's great-grandmother and family are from this region of Austria. As we drove through little mountain towns, through tunnels and changing elevation many times. We were amazed and captivated at the enormous height and vast beauty of the Alps. The deeper we got into Austria the higher the peaks reached up. Many peaks were snow capped, even in the middle of the summer. We took "fern pass" and came out at the base of Zugspitze, the tallest point in Germany it is ONLY 9,700 feet to the summit. We thought about taking the trip to the top but we decided to continue onto Innsbruck. Once in Innsbruck, we took ... read more

Today will be our last whole day in Austria. After being warned about the coming cooler and wet weather we decided to spend the day in the city and take in as many sights as we could. As it has turned out, the weather has remained fine but a few degrees cooler than yesterday. It is very convenient having the hotel in the inner city as everything is just a short walk away. Firstly we walked down near the golden roof to the The City Tower and up 148 steps to the top. It has a 360 walk around tower under the clock so gives a magnificent view out over the roofs of the Old Town. It looks directly down over the golden roof building and the Hofburg Palace so well worth the climb up. We ... read more

After the peace of the mountains, sleeping in Central Innsbruck certainly required ear plugs. We are in the quieter, backside of the hotel, but it's still noisey. The clock chimes every quarter hour and bongs on the hour. At 6.45am the jets are allowed to start flying and I think we might be right in the flight path, then at 7.00am the church bells start ringing - real close bonging!!! Wake up, get up! We stripped the inner out of the duvet to reduce heat in the room so had a resonably comfortable night despite bells. We gather there is to be another day of hot weather then things should cool down. Following the usual European breakfast of cereals, fruit, eggs, meats, cheeses, bread etc we headed out on Maria Theresien Strasse which seems to be ... read more

Today was a day of travel. Firstly we said goodbye to our fellow guests and swapped addresses and then goodbye to one of our hosts, Lisa. It feels a bit strange as for the past 10 days we've felt part of the families we've stayed with. It's really a home away from home. The thunderstorm last night has caused some flooding in Hallstatt we heard with water and mud running down the mountain and into the market square. The traffic was held up and fire trucks that do that sort of service were everywhere. I'm not sure of the extent of the damage. Elsewhere seemed to be fine. Since Larry was to transport gear through to Ebensee for those moving on, he took us with him instead of our going to Salzburg. We went through to ... read more
