Hey there,
Sorry i haven't written in a while. I just wasn't feeling it the pat couple of days. But since we will be leaving soon i decided to catch you up. On Wednesday we woke up and it was very nice outside. The previous day it had rained so we were happy to know that our adventures would be happening on a pretty day. At around 6:15 am the boys (Myles and George) left to go on their fishing trip. Cindy and i decided to just relax at the cabina for the next couple of hours until our tour was to begin.
The "tourismo" bus picked us up at our place at 9am and we were off to see the sloths. After a very bumpy ride we arrived in Cahuita about 20 minutes later. We got out and met our guide at the gift shop. He led us to a large room where we watched a shop film about sloths. I started with this really cheesy song about sloths and then went into some general info about their lives and how the sloth sanctuary was founded. The goal of the sanctuary is to bring in hurt or abandoned
sloths and raise/heal them, and then eventually release them back to the wild. After that we headed into a holding area for the adult sloths that are unable to live in the wild. There were 4 sloths in there, three two fingered sloths and one three fingered sloth. The poor three fingered sloth had lost his left arm when we came into contact with a power line. We were allowed to go into one of the cages and pet one of the sloths. There fur is very coarse. After that we were led to a holding area for the baby sloths. Its so sad because all babies that are brought to them can never go back to the wild. For a sloths first year of life is stays holding on to its mothers chest. During this time it learns all the things it needs to survive on its own. But, without this crucial learning period, it doesn't know what to do. So if it were set free it would starve waiting for people to feed it. Poor babies. We got to see two adolescent sloths (about a year each). When that was over we were led into a different area
where they keep the tiny baby sloths. They were in big Tupperware boxes lined with teddy bears and towels. They were so freakin' cute. I wanted to take them all home with me. The sloth sanctuary was neat, but i think the Jagura rescue was way cooler. I was a little disappointed with the sloth sanctuary.
Shortly after we boarded the bus to head to the chocolate lady's house. Myles and i had already gone on this part of the tour with our other tour guide Ricky, so this was all stuff i had seen before. After her demonstration we bought some goodies to take home with us. Myles really wanted some powdered chocolate to make hot coco with so i got that, along with some red garlicky past for rice, and some coco butter lip balm. After the chocolate lady we headed again to the amazing waterfall that we have gone to twice now(these two things are part of a lot of pre-made travel adventures that the guides here take people on.). It is beautiful, but Cindy fell pretty bad the last time we went so she opted to stay at the car, far away from the slippery
rocks, and i had already seen it so i stayed with her. When the other couple we were with was done viewing the waterfall we all got on the bus and headed back to Puerto Viejo.
Once we got back Cindy and i headed into town to meet the boys for lunch at MoJos. Sadly they did not catch anything. But as Myles says "that's why they call it fishing, and not catching." Also, while we were out of town enjoying the sloths, it rained in Puerto Viejo and the men were both soaking wet. Poor guys. Lunch as always there was amazing. I got a pulled pork sandwich again and Cindy got nachos which we both enjoyed. I wrote this blog so that the people back home could read it and see what we were up to, but i have recently realized that it is being read by some of the local merchants here. Its kinda weird but cool i guess. And with that said, anyone going to Puerto Viejo, go to MoJos. The food is great and the people there rock. After lunch we headed back home to relax. We all sat on the porch and read
or just watched the birds and other wild animals run around the yard.
At around 6:30pm we had a taxi come get us and take us to dinner. We had heard (from lonely plant) that a place in town called Loco Natural had the best fish tacos in Costa Rica, and since the boys did not catch anything for us to make tacos out of at home, Cindy wanted to go there to appease her craving. But, it turns out they are closed almost the whole month of November. So, we headed down to Rockin Js for a drink. The parents wanted to see what it looked like. Then we headed into town to try Chili Rojo, since everyone was craving sushi. But, sadly Chili Rojo was closed as well! We wandered around for a while, and discussed where to go. We were all pretty hungry so when we spotted another place serving sushi we ran inside to order. I can not remember what the place is called, but it was small and cute. All the seating was outside which is nice with the humidity and heat here. We ordered some shrimp tempura, veggie tempura, and two rolls to
share, along with drinks, of course. After the drinks arrived the owner got on her bike and left. Which surprised us all because we thought she was the only one working there, and that she had left us all alone. We joked that she had to go get more food for us. It turns out there was a cook there along with some other girls just hanging out that we didn't see. Finally the food came, but it was worth the wait. The potatoes in the veggie tempura were amazing, and one of the rolls we got had plantains on it, which i really enjoyed as well. We had a good time hanging out sharing sushi and chatting. It was really fun, and we all headed home happy and full.
