Angel, Rach and Andreu
A new Catalan friend.
Maravillosa!
Tulum: 10/10 - Playa maravillosa, cabinas encantadoras, cenotes refrescantes y ruinas históricos.
It’s a very long bus ride to cross Honduras, and San Pedro Sula isn’t the best city in the world either. It holds the record for highest number of Maras Gang Members We hopped it out of there the next morning, accompanied by a newly made friend (Catalan) and got sorted in a little place called Copan. A spectacular place for ruins, right on the Honduran/Guatemalan border, and not to be missed. The quaint town of Copan was a relief to all the senses and we couldn’t have felt safer than we did in this little town.
Sometimes it’s difficult to arrange meeting a friend on the other side of the world when the only contact details you’ve got
are via email. It’s not made any easier when you arrive 4 hours late and you’ve made your friend return to the central park every half hour until they find you. But in the end we did make it to Antigua (Guatemala) and we did find Rob and Osh. This time round it was just a quick drink, and then we weren’t to see them again in Mexico.
We got some great tips from them, best of which was the Volcano hike. Something we probably wouldn’t have done. Amazing value for money - $5 to risk your life in a tiresome walk straight up a mountain and melt you shoes on the volcanic rock. Rivers of Lava only 5 meters away and red hot magma right below your feet. Fan-tastic!
From Antigua we headed North West stopping off in Rio Dulce and Livingston. Finca Tijax is an excellent place to stay, and getting right done to nature. The ride out to Livingston is worthwhile but a day trip will suffice.
Some good times after we reached the island of Flores and enjoyed dinner on the waterfront overlooking a beautiful sunset accompanied by plenty of Beatles music. Flores
is base camp to Tikal. I must admit that I was hanging out to get to Tikal, and it was worth the wait. Highlight of the day was finding ourselves alone on the top of a temple that offers the most surreal views and jungle sounds. It’s enough to make your hair stand on end.
Belize was a letdown for us. Can’t say why, but I think we chose the wrong island. That, and our cancelled yacht tour. Reason; Sunburnt Englishmen that didn’t want to get any redder. We weren’t impressed. Leaving however, we were lucky enough to meet up with some very nice Australians. We enjoyed dinner with the four of them and then a leisurely walk along the waterfront and through the park. The town was quite animated due to it being Fathers day in Mexico.
Laura and Chris stayed with us and we took the bus (Wahoo! short bus ride!) to Tulum. -What a place!!!!! Great beach, great ruins, great pizza, dazzling freshwater Cenotes, and cheap claras! (shandy.) Loving it! Our beachfront cabin just made it all the better. I’d return to Tulum in a Heartbeat! Rob and Osh caught up with us here, which
turned out just grand as Rob taught us all how to play 500. A step up from Brett’s “It’s kinda like Rummie” game. (Sorry Brett, but it’s true.)
To end the trip, Angel and I booked ourselves into another beach front hotel for 5 days in Playa del Carmen. This certainly consisted of nothing more than Sunbathing, swimming, fine dining and… well, playing 500.
Not much left to tell after that. We spent a few days on Isla Mujeres, and took a tour that I rate in my top 5 for the whole journey. If you ever get a chance to swim with a 7 meter Whaleshark, then do it! It is something I have always wanted to do and it lived up to all expectations. It was out of this world.
So now we’re back in Spain, and the only real adventure on the cards is the move back to NZ. Much more of a leap of faith for Àngel than myself. Back in NZ 16 September.
