Today we went into the rainforest! We got up at about 6am and went very early to meet Fitzroy, our guide. We trekked through the rainforest on the Gilpin Trail, which took us to many beautiful waterfalls. We also saw some amazing animals. There was a bit of a Steve Irwin moment when Fitzroy leapt onto a clump and grabbed this little snake!! It was so small and it wasn't poisonous, in fact it was quite cute. The end part of its tail came off though, which was disgusting, because it was still moving! Fitzroy said it would grow back [View Full Entry]

Blogger Bec New entrant for the "Top 3 Experiences of the Trip", perhaps even "Top 3 of my Life". Today we had a midnight excursion to see the endangered Leatherback turtles on the beach at Matura beach in northern Trinidad. We were in the incredibly priviledged position of seeing the entire ritual from start to finish. The magnificent ritual that is the cycle of life for the leatherbacks begins with ferocious mating between all and sundry out in the depths of the ocean. Every male and female of mating age (it takes between 20 and 30 YEARS before a leatherback reaches [View Full Entry]

A Prehistoric Face

This morning we went to Bloody Bay beach. The river runs into the sea there when the tide comes a bit further in, and I spotted an abandoned bamboo raft. We were only there for about 15 minutes, and walked up the beach, then split to drive down the Caribbean coast. We stopped at a Roti shop, and I had a vegetable Roti which was lush, and we sat on Stone Haven beach, underneath a poisonous Manchineel tree for shade, and luckily we didn't touch, because we later found out that if you touch any part of it you get severe [View Full Entry]

Blogger Dougo Today we were picked up from our apartment by Darlington, a local Tobagoan who was our guide for the day. Our trip was to take us up the coast, across to Little Tobago via a glass bottom boat to view the world's largest brain coral, lunch, then a tour in the rain forest. Unfortunately, they were late to pick us up due a booking error and therefore, poor old Darlington had to basically wing it to fit it all in. We first drove up the hills to the highest point on Tobago for a walk into the rain [View Full Entry]

Little Tobago Bird Sanctuary

Today started terribly, because the water system throughout Bloody Bay was broken! We couldn't shower, and we had to use pool water to wash and use the loo! We had a swim anyway and practised our underwater somersaults and entering the sea from a boat when snorkelling technique! It got much better though, because we went back to Castara beach for the whole day! We swam in the sea, then had a little snorkel and saw some small tropical fish. We went back to the beach and had sandwiches and then we went back in the sea. Some young girls, [View Full Entry]

CHICKEN!
We had quite a long dip in the pool this morning. We went back to Charlotteville on the new road, and got some postcards and tiny packets of peanuts! We then drove into Speyside, on the Atlantic side of the island, and stopped in a fruit juice bar. The man had grown all his own fruits, Pineapple, Papaya, Banana, Mango, and instead of making it into juice with water, he put in the juice of his own grape fruits! It was really, really nice! After that, we headed into Scarborough ( down south) and did another supermarket shop. Before we [View Full Entry]

Something that will get better with practice - getting the gear ready pre-dive!
Blogger Dougo Today was Day 3 of my Open Water Dive Course. Day 1: I spent a lot of time sitting watching a DVD and doing lots of theory with my German instructor, Jason. At the end of the day I kitted up and went and tried a few skills in the pool. Pretty easy really due to the fact that the pool was maybe 10 ft by 4 ft and only a metre deep. I had forgotten how foul chlorinated water tastes. Day 2: Arrived at 9:30am and Jason informed me that we were going straight into the ocean [View Full Entry]

Briefing

Buddy check

We had another dip in the pool at a ridiculously early time, and then we set off into Scarborough ( about an hour away from Bloody Bay) to search for some new fins for Emily! We went into several shops, but none had the right size and if they were the right size, they were too expensive! So we drove down a little further to Pigeon Point ,where we looked in some dive shops, and eventually found some cheap fins that fitted well. We came home and had lunch then set out to Castara beach, armed with wetsuits and snorkel [View Full Entry]

Banana Fanta
Banana Fanta
NEVER EVEN BEEN NEAR A BANANA AND FULL OF E NUMBERS!
After another early morning dip we drove through the rainforest up to the far north east of the island. I kept seeing signs on the Atlantic side which warned of the Portuguese Man O'War Jellyfish. But I wasn't worried about these. I was more concerned about the Barracudas! As soon as we got too Charlotteville, we went in search of a recommended cappuccino café. We found it and I had a delicious watermelon milkshake! Emily had Fanta, but it wasn't your ordinary Fanta. It was bright orange, yet it was banana flavoured! We stopped for another traditional Creole lunch in [View Full Entry]

On the beach

Blogger Bec Far be it from me to profess being a cricket expert - I've been sledged, heckled and harrassed for the way I enjoy cricket, and that is just from Doug. I admit, I don't know point from leg gully, nor am I aufait with Tendulkar's batting average, and I don't even know how to spell the Australian coaches' surname. However, I can safely say that I watch, support and admire the one day game with as much fervor and passion as the everyday Aussie bloke (albeit, NOT with a beer in hand...) Given that, I feel that I [View Full Entry]
