Blogger Dougo Today was Day 3 of my Open Water Dive Course. Day 1: I spent a lot of time sitting watching a DVD and doing lots of theory with my German instructor, Jason. At the end of the day I kitted up and went and tried a few skills in the pool. Pretty easy really due to the fact that the pool was maybe 10 ft by 4 ft and only a metre deep. I had forgotten how foul chlorinated water tastes. Day 2: Arrived at 9:30am and Jason informed me that we were going straight into the ocean to do some skills. I had a buddy today, a guy from Sweden who's dive certificate was 35 years out of date. He was doing a refresher with me but I think he ought to ... read more

We had another dip in the pool at a ridiculously early time, and then we set off into Scarborough ( about an hour away from Bloody Bay) to search for some new fins for Emily! We went into several shops, but none had the right size and if they were the right size, they were too expensive! So we drove down a little further to Pigeon Point ,where we looked in some dive shops, and eventually found some cheap fins that fitted well. We came home and had lunch then set out to Castara beach, armed with wetsuits and snorkel gear. We were less than up to your waist in water, when we were into the reef. There were so many amazing tropical fish! There were Trumpet fish, Bermuda Chub and many, many more amazing ... read more

After another early morning dip we drove through the rainforest up to the far north east of the island. I kept seeing signs on the Atlantic side which warned of the Portuguese Man O'War Jellyfish. But I wasn't worried about these. I was more concerned about the Barracudas! As soon as we got too Charlotteville, we went in search of a recommended cappuccino café. We found it and I had a delicious watermelon milkshake! Emily had Fanta, but it wasn't your ordinary Fanta. It was bright orange, yet it was banana flavoured! We stopped for another traditional Creole lunch in Speyside. I had a lovely home made pumpkin and coconut ice cream. When we got back to the villa, we took our snorkelling gear down to our local beach, Bloody Bay, and had a bit ... read more

Blogger Bec Far be it from me to profess being a cricket expert - I've been sledged, heckled and harrassed for the way I enjoy cricket, and that is just from Doug. I admit, I don't know point from leg gully, nor am I aufait with Tendulkar's batting average, and I don't even know how to spell the Australian coaches' surname. However, I can safely say that I watch, support and admire the one day game with as much fervor and passion as the everyday Aussie bloke (albeit, NOT with a beer in hand...) Given that, I feel that I can say my bit about the state of this year's CWC with a fair amount of impunity. So, with no further ado, here are my thoughts about the tournament so far, God help me if ... read more

Woke up at about 5.30am, had breakfast, and was in the pool by 7am!! It was still quite warm. Next we went into Scarborough to go to the supermarket. This was quite boring. Then we came home and had lunch, and spent most of the afternoon in the pool. I fell asleep on the sofa and later awoke to find my barbecued sausages for tea. ... read more

I woke up really early, about 5.30am, because we were still English time and these god dam national birds!! I was well tired! We waited till about 6am, when I saw a frightening sight. That Gecko had escaped into our room! It ran across the ceiling and I was really freaked out. I ran upstairs and sat in the living room for a bit until we used our rations to have breakfast. The view was spectacular across the bay. Just after breakfast I got another shock as Cleo, the resident dog leapt into our living room and starting jumping up. I thought she was a stray, but later remembered that she lived with the owners. Then I realised that all the dogs I had seen the night before do have owners, but are just the ... read more

Blogger Bec What a wonderful day - the complete stereotypical Caribbean experience! We started early in the day with a glass bottomed boat out to Buccoo Reef - the 2nd biggest in the western hemisphere. The reef has been protected for almost 30 years so it is doing well, with a large range of life and coral. The highlight was a school of cuttlefish, baby ones included. They have a really unusual way of swimming in a perfect horizontal line which struck me. Maybe it's for protection? I would've thought it was more unsafe that way - divide and conquer!! Our snorkelling gear was worth the money - no mask leakages, no blisters from ill fitting fins! I've never been on a glass bottomed boat before - didn't know what to expect. In the end, ... read more

We left the house early, about 5.30am. We got to Gatwick at about 7am. So, from there we had to check in and go through security which took about 2 hours. The wait was long and tedious, but once we got through into the duty free shopping area, it was quite fun. We went and sniffed all the funky perfumes in WORLD and went sales shopping in FAT FACE. I didn't buy anything but Mum bought a top. We sat in the duty free area for about two hours as well because the flight was delayed. Finally, we were told we could move down to the gate where we sat for about 10 minutes before a lady came and told us there was a technical problem on the plane which we would need to wait ... read more

Blogger Dougo Today was quite a stressful day for me. After getting up at around 11 to pack I went to find an ATM to withdraw money to pay for our stay at The Gingerbread House. We needed to be at the ferry docks at 12:30pm to be sure of our booking. Well after trying three different banks I withdrew the money and sprinted in the 35 degree heat back to the guest house. Dripping with sweet we paid and then waited 4o minutes for a taxi to arrive to take us to the ferry. Upon arriving at the ferry, we had to pass through security. You know, the emptying of the pockets and the taking off the hat and so forth. I had the keys to the guesthouse in my pocket didn't I!!!! Whilst ... read more

Blogger Bec Hi all, we spent a nice 4 days in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain, relaxing and watching cricket (on TV this time, sadly!) It was stinking hot so we mostly sought refuge in our lovely aircon'd room at our BnB or in a bar, limin' with the locals, talking up the Aussies! However, in the cool of the evening, after we dragged ourselves away from the divine splash pool in the landscaped gardens of the guest house, we managed a few walks around the more wealthy suburbs of POS. (There are lots of places that tourists are told to stay away from - most locals avoid some of the areas as well!!) Below are some pics from Queens Park Savannah - a huge park full of people playing sport, ... read more
