Blogger Dougo Today we checked into our wonderful guest house in Port of Spain called the Gingerbread House. A gorgeous home with three rooms and a splash pool. They made a wonderful breakfast that saw us through until dinner. Today was spent watching the Aussies pumel the West Indies around the park at a local bar called Sweet Lime. 'Lime' in T&T means 'Party'. After the afternoon got rained out we hung out at the guest house playing with their cute as dog, Ollie. ... read more

Blogger Dougo Today we said goodbye to St Kitts and Nevis and flew to Trinidad. We caught the 8:00am ferry that left at 8:30am over to St Kitts and set about trying to find somewhere for breakfast. The place was a ghost town. Being a Sunday everyone was at church. Being the day after all the cricket games had finished no one was around. Ended up having Subway with two Aussies from our guest house, Kyle and David. We all caught a cab to the airport where the fun really began. Now, we booked all our flights in November, months before the world cup. Our airline we booked through was Caribbean Star. February 1st, a month before the biggest even the Caribbean has ever hosted, Liat decided to take over Caribbean Star. NO ONE TOLD ... read more

Here is the rest of my Trinidad adventure... sorry it is all at once. I am writing retrospectively as I now back in Canada and back in school after a wonderful March Break in Trinidad. Here is the next segment... On Monday night we watched the opening ceremonies of the World Cricket tournament being hosted in Jamaica. It was neat to get a feel for the music, costumes, and players of cricket too. Tuesday, I left Tracy for a few days and embarked on the “Road Trip all over Trinidad” part of my journey with my new friend Jesse as driver, along with his friend Kevin for the first part of the journey. Jesse is a good friend of my friend Alex and it was his job to be my tour guide. Our carriage, his old ... read more

Hello everyone, how you going? ( I am going to recap here what happened now after the fact). This morning Tracy and I went to Grand Bazaar a shopping mall that was the largest in the whole Caribbean to recent times. We went into the Carib beer paraphenalia shop to take some photos for my friend Ryan who lives in Texas. We also went into the grocery store and got to see all the local food on the shelves. I think there is a lot to be learned from the shelves-about what ingredients are important, what things are not used and to see how much has been influenced by other nations. We bought a bunch of snacks, vegetables like dashene, yams etc. In the afternoon Tracy and I went for a walk down to Dookie Lane ... read more

Hello everyone, how you going? (as they say in Trinidad). I am back on my travels again and I am currently in D'abadie Trinidad for my March Break. I arrived here on Saturday after a pretty uneventful flight southward. You could feel the change in temperature as we headed southward. In fact as soon as we hit about Virginia it was sunny skies all the way through. I sat with a man from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on my way down who works for the T T express ferry service that goes between Trinidad and Tobago. He told me some of the neat things he has seen and the people he has worked with. I don't think he enjoys it very much working down here, particularly because of Port of Spain. I am not staying near there ... read more

So I was meant to go to my last wedding on Saturday...but we never really made it. Between running late to start with, getting lost, a huge traffic jam and torrential downpour, the wedding was over before we even made it there. So instead we went straight to the reception...the important thing is that I still got my free food. And I don't think I've laughed as hard as I did stuck in the car in a long time. Clerene's best friend, a crazy 70 year old woman noticed that all the guys in the car next to us were hanging out the window staring. I don't notice these things anymore. So naturally she rolls down her window and strikes up a conversation with these gentlemen. Mrs Barrows: You staring at my daughter? Guy: _____ ... read more

So I decided the time had come for me to head down de islands. Everyone refers to the Bocas...a group of about 11 different islands of the northwest coast as simply going down de islands. It's right off the coast of Chagaraumas, an area that used to be the US military base during WWII. So now it consists mainly of a national park, lots of expats, and yahties who bring their boats up here to get them out of the hurricane path. One of the islands, Gasparee, is most known for its cave so that's where I was heading. The elementary school tour that I crashed never ended up showing up...but luckily the tour guide still agreed to take me out. It was about a 15 minute boat ride past some of the other islands and ... read more

And those birding people take that pretty literally. I can't remember the last time I woke up after 8. But after a very uneventful week I decided I would do anything there was to do on Saturday. So I was up at 4:30 to go birdwatching. The last time I was up at 4:30 was before I had slept, not after. Anyways, you may laugh about my birding...but apparently I was in the presence of greatness without even knowing it. My guide for the day was Roger Neckles, one of the leading wildlife photographers in the world. Apparently he's a National Geographic regular and all the pictures in the airport...along with most anywhere else are his. It was just me and Roger, which luckily didn't end up being as weird as it sounds. Although when I ... read more
