Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.

Sunday, August 10, 2008 We awake and Harlan sees the only sun for the entire day! By the time we are ready to eat it is pouring outside and we decide to head out toward the Pacific beaches. We find our way across the Bridge of the Americas and proceed onto the Pan American Highway toward David. We are beginning to get hungry but stop at Capira at the junk shop. Sara thinks thinks this is a treasure house. She especially likes a figure of a monkey made from cocobola wood. On down the street a short distance to our favorite [View Full Entry]

Trying to learn how to use this. Seems one must save and not publish to get back to a specific title and add more days. We shall see. {later edit - listing the entries then clicking on the text allows one to edit what has been saved or published.} About 9:45 PM on Thursday, 7 August Lauren Thomas picked us up at home and took us to the airport. Checked our bags and waited for our plane which left at 12:50 AM for Atlanta. Just before boarding we enjoyed a TCBY frozen dish. We arrived at Atlanta early but were in [View Full Entry]

We are finally back in Boquete and unhappy to have left Panama City. I loved it there. Would have liked to stay much longer and enjoyed hanging out with Meredith and Lena. Anyway, we will do some hiking to waterfalls today and then move on to Costa Rica either tomorrow or Friday and then from there to Nicaragua. Everyone says it is wonderful there and I cannot wait. Hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end soon. Only a week and a half left. [View Full Entry]

Having only got back to our hostel at 3am from a club we got to the airport feeling pretty aweful but my mood soon turned as I was told I would be upgraded to first class for the short flight, sweet! We had some fried chicken at 5.30am before we boarded and Simon left me at my leather reclining armchair and continued down the social walkway to economy with the rest of the plebs. After an amazing journey of fresh fruit and pancakes we arrived in Panama City international airport, the start of the end as it were for our trip. [View Full Entry]

Ended up staying in Panama City for another day since there is so much to do here. Today we went to Panama Viejo which is the ruins of Panama from back in the 1500s. It rained most of the afternoon but we spent a good bit of time exploring the area of the city that we are staying in, Casco Viejo. It is very old world and the buildings are magnificent. We saw Noreyaga's, not spelled right, home before he was forced out by the US. Only a shell of a building due to the bombing but still can tell how [View Full Entry]

Made it to Panama City last night and what an ordeal. Yesterday we left Boquete around 11 am and went to the bus terminal in David to get our tickets to Panama City. Well everyone had the same idea and we waited in line for 2 hours just to purchase tickets. So, in the end, we did not leave for Panama City until 3pm. Eight hour bus ride that cost $12.60 each. The bus was nice, played movies, had a bathroom and was air conditioned. Took 8 hours and we were unsure what bus to take to the hostel. Finally found [View Full Entry]
