It's now Sunday and we are heading out of the city to begin the rest of our adventure. Leaving Panama City, we wind our way through the market area and try to find our way to Puente de Las Americas...that bridge we could see from a distance while in Amador. As usual, signage is hard to read and anything on any of our maps is suspect. During a long wait in traffic, right in the middle of the busiest, most crowded and densest open market area of the city, we see a sign for food that Richie just must take a photo of....comida (food or meals) for only a buck! What a deal. However, we must still find our way to the bridge over the Pacific end of the canal so that we can be on ... read more

So, now where did I leave off_ Ah yes, I went to sleep amongst the rooster crowings and fireworks. I'm going to try to attempt to finish this story and others in 30 minutes, so I can move on. As your trying to write your adventures, new ones are happening, so it's impossible to not get behind. Even when you're not trying to do anything. It's virtually impossible, because I suppose just living life regular like this is a bit extraordinary, that is to say, unusual. Everything is this new experience. I forgot to mention that my last night in bocos del toro, I ate chicken feet and neck, and meat pie, to celebrate my feeling better from pneumonia. Don't ask me why, but it worked. Also, some crazy rice, and coconut bread. Lots of stuff ... read more

Today we got up at 6 to meet the van at 7 AM outside our hostel. We had signed up the previous day with Panama Rafters to be taken on a white water trip down the Chiriqui Viejo river. After a two-hour drive (the river runs along the Costa Rica-Panama border), we arrived at our starting destination. We slide down the hillside to get to the river, with our guides (two boat leaders, one guide-in-training, and one local girl who had rafted this river before) pushing and maneuvering the rafts down the hill. We set out on our 17 km ride in two boats, one guide, three girls, and one trainee in each. Lee, Katrina, and I named ours “Team Tíburon” (shark, which was also related to an inside joke that’s not worth explaining). I voted ... read more

More pictures of the area around the Pacific opening of the Canal. ADDED on Wednesday, March 7. 2007: I didn't add these photos until we got back since the internet bombed out when I had gotten to this point (from our hotel - Hotel Los Capitanes - in El Valle de Anton, Panama). Getting internet access where we could hook the digital camera directly to the public computer proved difficult. Getting internet access with my own laptop was also somewhat allusive. Now that we are back -- to some unbelievably arctic surroundings! -- I will be adding all of our photos and a few comments, if needed. Richie will be adding his version of our travels as the mood strikes. All in all, we had a great time and would encourage everyone to consider a trip ... read more

We decided to explore the Canal without really knowing where to go. Ended up making it to Amador...this is a small penisula of land that was created by the dirt and soil dredged up during the creation of the Canal. The long winding peninsula has several restaurants, a Smithsonian station, some residences (that we didn't see), and lots of natural beauty. Good thing I didn't rely on Richard's interpretation of the maps we had and that he was reading...none helped much and we kind of fell into the area we were trying to get to by pure luck and chance! I am not sure why, but the majority of countries in Central American have most of their major roads without any street signs!... read more

We stayed right in the middle of the city. While it was HORRIBLE learning to drive around, eventually, we figured it out. We met some more people..American and otherwise. The best part of our stay in the city was: 1) one of the BEST bands we have every heard, and 2) one of the finest steak meals we have ever had, at Martin Fierro's...sort of like a Ruth Chris Steak House I assume, but better! This entry contains pictures for over two of the nights we stayed in the city, including those taken at the Istmo Brew Pub, the Hotel Riande and the Hotel Riande bar. After the band ended, the juke box was turned up loud and we met a bunch of new people. Some of the band stayed on and the new group -- ... read more

Having not gotten up early enough for the morning coffee tour (“this is where we pluck ‘em, this is where we roast ‘em,” etc.) we made our own coffee tour. Boquete as a town is basically laid out as a strip - it doesn’t radiate outwards from a central location like most towns, but lies along one main road that climbs slowly up the mountain. The entire region is known for good coffee, so there was a café about every five feet. We stopped in a lot of them, after more banana pancakes. I drank water, because I’m not going to waste good coffee on my unappreciative palate. The others liked it. We walked all the way up through the town until we reached “Mi Jardin es Su Jardin” (“My Garden is your Garden”). This is ... read more

We discovered Panama's first (and newly opened) micro-brewery. We found this pub up around the corner from our hotel and went there twice...first night in the city and then the next night too where Richie and I won once on the pool table, only to get trounced the next game!... read more

What a fantastic day! I went on a personal tour around Panama today with a group of other crew: Kristina & Chelsea (production singers), Ricky, Luke, Ellie & Candice (dancers), Kevin (internet café manager) and Natalia (supper club server). One of the bartenders, Elmer, is from Panama and he arranged to have a couple of his friends rent a van and be our personal guides for the day. We started out in Colon, the city where our ship docks which is on the Eastern side of the country on the Caribbean Sea. We drove to the Miraflores locks and visitor centre on the Panama Canal. It was great to see, only because it’s so famous and such a major achievement in bridging the two oceans. There were big ships and some smaller ferries going through as ... read more
