Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Alright....so Chinandega is supposed to be the second biggest town in Nicaragua. I´m not usually a big fan of big towns, but I liked this place. The Collectivo dropped us off at the main bus terminal and from there we had to take a taxi to the only recommended place to stay, we didn´t have a lot of options because we got there after dark. We settled in, and asked where we could get some food. The owner told us that the Parque Central was just a block and a half away. We headed out and we were surprised to see [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Managua, Nicaragua on Tuesday night, Oct. 13th, and only stayed until the next morning. The little part of Managua we saw was interesting and disconcerting at the same time. Everyone we met was extremely friendly, and yet they warned us that crime was rampant nearby. Given the warmth of almost everyone we met, it was hard to believe the bad intentions of the people we didn't meet. Our hotel was just a block west of the Tica bus station. The hotel staff 'allowed' us to walk back that far in search of food. Any further east, or any [View Full Entry]

Got my new camera! And Lenin and i have taken a lot of photos in the last few days... here is a selected photo essay.... Thursday 15 October 7:30am Argh. Okay, so I came into Managua to have a catscan of my lungs. Fine. The ISSUE has nothing to do with medical stuff though. The issue is that Lenin and I went to the bank and paid the fees. HE paid the total of $131 and the $12 fee for the 1-800 number to call and set up the interview appointment. MY job is to make the call and set up [View Full Entry]

This is one of the two volcanos that are on an island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. Pretty kewl.
Greetings from Nicaragua! We left Costa Rica on the 24th after heading back through the capital to perform some business and eat Taco Bell. I had a Crunchwrap Supreme and it tasted delightful. It tasted like the same dirty meat they use back in the states, so it was a welcomed and heart-warming treat. We caught a fancy bus (complete with air conditioning...the first we´d experienced in 2 weeks) after finding out that we were too late to book tickets for the more popular bus line and having to run around San Jose at 7 am. The people were not too [View Full Entry]

I was only for a short time back in Guatemala. From Livingston I went by boat to Rio Dulce. The beauty of the forest passed by and I enjoyed the boatride a lot. After spending one night in Rio Dulce I went back to Guatemala city to catch the international bus to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. The next day I walked into the old part of the city center. It was quite a long walk but I liked it because while walking you can see what is happening on the streets. There was a huge market covered by [View Full Entry]

Stuff that has happened... I turned 27. Lenin and I went to the bank yesterday and paid the nonrefundable fees to set up an interview at the American Embassy in Manangua, Nicaragua, so he can get a tourist visa and come to my country and meet my people for the Navidad. Annnnnd! After having my camera stolen at the beginning of August and suffering through 2 1/2 months without, one arriiiiiiived in the mail! From my lovely mother! THANK YOU, MOM! October 9 I set off from San Salvador in my overly comfy air conditioned bus at 4:30 AM passing through Honduras for the third time, equaling the number of nights I spent there in the last month, this time on my way to Granada, Nicaragua, with a momentary stop in Managua along the way. Set on the shores of Lago de Nicaragua, Grenada is a clean colonial city complete with elegant churches, green plazas, and flowery boulevards that make it a fine place for urban wandering. Tourism is a strong segment of the economy here as most visitors to Nicaragua spend [View Full Entry]

Estelí This town is quiet and hardworking unless of course they are celebrating thier patron saint, in which case the whole town shoots fire works off from dusk until dawn and spends the day eating raspados around the town square. The horses even dance to the marching bands while on parade. We visited the Nicasa cigar factory today which makes cigars for international export and uses genuine Havana seeds to grow tobacco for the Nicaraguan speciality smoke. The aroma of the aging tobacco was incredibly intense and gave you the sensation you were smoking a cigar as you entered the room, [View Full Entry]

4 October 2009 Sunday 6:47 pm Haven’t written in a while. The week of medical crap in Managua and the excess of down time and internet searching and emailing and chatting… kind of wore me out. Decided I was thinking too much and it would be better just to get back here and move on with my life instead of all the “what ifs” that were running through my mind. The upside of having to stay longer than I thought in Managua was that I was extremely glad to be back and to have Lenin hold me while I slowly broke [View Full Entry]

This is a HUGE moth that nearly robbed me of my everlasting soul while dining at La Selva Negra, a 120 hectare wildlife reserve, outside of Matagalpa. Beware. . .
Yo MTV raps from Matagalpa WORD It is about to rain so we thought we would enter a little info, enjoy. Matagalpa is a nice city, finally. We have enjoyed other places but this feels like it is really someones home. People are helpful and friendly but not overbearing and there is even a real super market with organized shelves with the meat in a cooler. Wild. The city sits in a valley surrounded by hills that remind me of LaCrescent, Minnesota. This is coffee growing country. When we arrived in Nicaragua we expected to drink great coffee, but found that [View Full Entry]
