Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

**The photos here are courtesy of big Carl who we spent time with on the Rio San Juan, and who was kind enough to let me upload some of his photos since I left my camera up a volcano a few weeks back. One of the countries high up the list of places I've always wanted to see is Costa Rica. Like the name Borneo is evocative of primeval forest so dense and remote you might never find your way out again, so Costa Rica to me is synomynous with verdant green rain forest home to lots of unlikely looking creatures [View Full Entry]

Hola !

Surf and Spear
Our new surf board and spear gun haha
We got into San Juan del Sur on Sunday and stayed sunday night in a nice little hospedaje. We met up with some other travelers we have seen several times and went out to a nice restaurant to treat ourselves before camping. The next day we caught a shuttle to Maderas, which is the beach that everyone goes to surf. San Juan del Sur is a little beach town right on a bay, so there isnt any waves. Once we arrived at Maderas we walked to the Beach just south, Majagual. There is one hostel and its a bit pricy so [View Full Entry]

I can't help being a nosey parker here - nights are still and sticky so the locals pull their rocking chairs onto the streets to catch any stray breeze. The stable doors to their houses are thrown open to reveal colonial parlours that provide little clue to what century we're in. The wooden wall clocks tick slowly by to the pace of life and the eyes of the obligatory Virgin gaze down tenderly. On the pavement, old ladies smile warmly as I wish them "Buenos Noches" and stroll along past their living museum. In the town centre the vast cathedral dominates [View Full Entry]

On one of the ‘chicken buses’ headed from Matagalpa, I awoke to see several men outside of the bus leaning into our windows yelling in Spanish. At first I was very startled thinking the bus was under attack by people climbing in through windows and doors, but then looking around I saw we were stopped in a market area and the men were hanging in the window with bags of vegetables to sell. Some quickly got on the bus by the doors and others clung on to the windows from the outside, shoving their products inside the bus to sell. After [View Full Entry]

Aside from the intensely painful sunburn covering large portions of my body, the heat rash taking over both my legs and bum, the itchy bug bites occupying my legs and feet, and the diarrhea i’ve picked up along the way, i am really liking Central America. Currently we are in Matagalpa, Nicaragua for the next few days before heading to El Salvador via Honduras. We are planning to bypass Honduras due to the whole military over throw and all. Hopefully without incident... The landscape here is utterly amazing, forested hillsides, winding roads among small valleys and large patches o [View Full Entry]

Starting the hike up Maderas
We left the beloved Granada and took the two oclock ferry straight to Isla de Ometepe. We met up with another Swedish guy named Joaquin on the ferry. He has been traveling for six months and hes a very cool and interesting guy. The ferry was pretty nice and not too bouncy. We arrived at dark and hiked for an hour to a cheap hostel the first night. We stayed in Hostel Ortiz, which was pretty cool and lax. Hammocks and tables and chairs for just hanging out. There werent very many travelers there but we didnt mind. Its a very [View Full Entry]

It's my last week of travel and guess who shows up at my door in Costa Rica? Mi Hermana!!! All of my family did a great job concealing the surprise visit from Jackie. In some ways the shock still hasn't worn off yet. It turned out to be a bitter-sweet reunion for us. Sadly, our dog Abbey passed away on June 20th and Jackie felt it was best to tell me in person. Our time together proved to be a period of healing for us both. We know in our hearts that Abbey wanted Jackie to be free and for her [View Full Entry]
