I am completely overwhelmed. I thought I knew what the next step in our life was, and then I went to the Peace Corps Close of Service conference and I am so confused. More about that later. Also, Lenin and I are going to Wiwili on Wednesday through Sunday. I have so many things going through my mind. What has these last two years in Nicaragua taught me? What have I brought to the table as a volunteer? What are we going to do in the States. Also, I am so angry. Angry with life in this village and angry with their sense of entitlement. Angry with the business practices that FAIL and how they make nothing being a small farmer and how they do not even DO THE MATH to seeeee how they are failing ... read more

Well, it's official. I am half Nicaraguan. I don't feel too different, except that I feel I have more clout with the family and in Nicaragua. Okay, with no further ado, photos.... The judge preached for a few minutes before the actual signing, also reading from the Nican constitution, and then preaching more. Key points include.... relationships need communication, respect, honesty, and fidelity. Men who hit women have a psychological problem and, really, a husband should not hit a wife because he is not her father, he is her husband. Same goes for the wife. She cannot beat her husband because she is not his mother, but his wife.... (it's okay for parents to hit their kids...). Fidelity was a big point, since so many Nican men have queridas. Also, she preached about how she never ... read more

Quick update. More seeds! Mail shoutout to Joy! Thank you! This Friday, Sept 4, marks my 1 YEAR MARK IN NICARAGUA! Yup, got here a year ago. Friday is also afrosh´s birthday :) Monday 5th my boss comes to visit me in my community. Tuesday, at like 3am, Lenin and I are heading to Wiwili, Jinotega, to visit his family. Which means I will have neither cell phone nor internet connection for over a week. I will be milking cows and making cheese and sitting next to Lenin as he tells his parents, face to face, that we actually are going to get married. Next July. Why am I nervous? Then the 15th is Nicaragua´s Independence Day. I don´t know if we will be back to Moropoto by then or not. So. PCV meeting Friday. Aglendinning´s ... read more

8 August 2009 Saturday night 6:15 pm A lot has been happening. Like, lots. In no particular order... My camera was stolen; everyone here was convinced I was pregnant but I definitely am not; I was tested for Chagas Disease and, thank god, don’t appear to have it; I dropped below 150; and Lenin asked for my hand in marriage… and I said yes! We are headed up to Wiwili to visit his family in a few weeks. The next goal then is to get him a tourist visa and us tickets and head home for the holidays. Then I will fly back to the homeland again in May and hit up the Mawr for the 2005 reunion. Then there will be a Nicaraguan wedding! After which we do visa stuff and embassy interviews and alla ... read more

Well, decided to come on down to San Lucas to use the internet. Glad there´s a cyber here, though usually I just go onto Somoto, today no me pide. I need to take more photos of the garden. The green beans are about 3 inches tall, the radishes are a couple of inches tall, the onions from the bulbs from the Cahails are also about 3 inches tall, and the carrots and beets have sprouted, as has the dill. So we´re doing good! Also, the squashes and cucumber and zucchini have all sprouted, too! I´ve been visiting the women of the seed bank, as well, and most everything is growing. In other news, I am bored. However, changes are coming! First of all, there´s another seed bank meeting on Tuesday. And then Saturday is 4th of ... read more

Sometimes, Lenin asks me to come up and spend the night with him at his work in the border town of El Espino where he works for customs. He has to work a 24 hour shift, so he leaves on the first bus out of Moropoto at 6.30 am and leaves El Espino at 7.30 am the next morning. Sometimes, he asks me to come visit. I´m going again tonight... it will be my 3rd time in about a month and a half. I don´t mind accompanying him at all... breaks up the week. Tomorrow is our 6 month anniversary. Which is, amazingly, not that strange at all.... read more

okay, i have no real energy to write today. i´ve just been answering emails... and i´m going to copy and paste parts of a few of those here... .......................... to my boss: Thank you for P´s mini Spa and the positive reinforcement. It feels like I have to keep reminding everyone in my community that I´ve only been here for 2 months. I mean, I´m still working on the español and getting people´s names straight but they´re ready for me to get up and GO and I´´m like, whoa, chill out. I started English classes like 3 weeks after arriving and go to every reunion they tell me about and visit INTA and UNAG in Somoto and go hang out with the volunteer mothers during PAININ and have to KEEP TELLING THEM that I am staying ... read more

Yeah, in a pissy mood. Not sure why. Something to do with S leaving back for her site, not getting breakfast, being the only one hauling water for the first 5 trips, not being proficient at washing pants on a 1.5x2 foot concrete slab, having Eyebrows be in such a good mood, Heartbreaker´s silence, and the fact that the aforementioned took my camo hat with him today and I am wearing my comfort BMC 1999 Hell Week shirt from Mel and wanted my goddamn camo Phillies cap to go with it but had to settle for stealing his Che hat. Also, this keyboard sucks. All I wanted to listen to on my hike down the mountain was Eminem and 50. And all I kept thinking all morning was, I wish a mothereffer would. As in, I ... read more
