Yesterday was a great day! I went to the market all by myself for the first time and I managed to get what I wanted without any problems at all. I wasn't run over by any of the cars, horses or donkeys...which is always nice. I looked everywhere for school supplies and could only find one little hut in the market that was selling some pretty random stuff. Although, I did manage to find a stapler there, which is like finding gold out here for some reason. I have not seen a stapler since I have been here. I have asked the other teachers for them, but I guess they seem to get stolen quite often. I am not too sure why because I only paid 40 Lempiras for it, which is like 2 dollars. So ... read more

My first week in Comayagua, Honduras has been truly amazing, although challenging at times. I am teaching the 1st grade at Escuela Bilingue Honduras. The school is very nice, especially for this area. The teachers have been so great and welcomed me right away. I believe there are around 40 teachers here altogether, but only about 10 are international. I was so excited to meet my class the first day, but not even half as excited as the kids were to meet me apparently. The first day I walked into the class I was completely swarmed by kids. By the end of the day, I had been asked a million questions about Canada, my family, my favourite colour, pets...everything you can imagine. They constantly tell me they love me, that they are happy that I am ... read more

Wow, 18 days without a blog post. I bet most of you thought I had given up. However, I have just been busy. I rediscovered Skype and since then I have been communicating with a few relatives more than before. I have also been planning the wedding, writing exams for the second quarter and playing NHL 2k9 on the Wii. Thanks to my aunt Dorthy, Mr.Josh and myself have been competing head to head on a nightly basis. No far I am the better hockey player, but he isn't so bad... for a Honduran. So where did we last leave off in the story? What was our main character doing? Ah yes, the drag race in Paraiso. Well we certainly have a lot of information to cover before the quiz, lets get started. First lets talk ... read more

Ever wonder what people are thinking on the other side of the the world? Chances are, if your reading this, you do. Well today is your lucky day, because the youth of Honduras has a message to send out to the world. To be more specific, my tenth grade English students have a message to send. I am confident you will find their views not to much different from those of North American teens. Please note that I have not altered any of these messages in any way. As a class, we worked together to grammatically improve our writing, they aren't perfect, but each student put a lot of heart into every thought. We now present them to you, the world. Please give them as much feedback as possible, as they will be reading your comments ... read more

If you ever find yourself wandering the countless intersections, laced throughout the streets of Comayagua, and you happen to stumble upon a corner pastry shop simply named "Coffee and Cakes," do yourself a favor and step inside. You will be pleasantly surprised. For just beyond eye shot of the countless cookies, cakes, tarts, parfaits, puddings, souffles, pies, and other pastries you will find yesterdays stale doughnuts. Chances are crusty croissants don't wet your appetite, assuming your ears aren't twice the length of your head, that is. What I mean is, rabbits love donuts. Especially those of the chocolate frosted variety. When you stop to think about it, it makes sense. The Cadbury bunny eats chocolate eggs, right? So why wouldn't these cuddly conies accompany their Caesar salads with a few surgery fried fritters? It is hard ... read more

This morning, on my walk to school, I couldn't help but notice that Barak Obama was voted into office last night. This is because it was on the front page of every Honduran newspaper I could find. It was interesting to see all the different headlines. The really funny thing, for me at least, was to see the news call someone a negro. In Honduras most people refer to African Americans as "negros" or "personas negros." Its not a racist thing, the word "negro" in Spanish means black. So when the newspaper types "los negros" they are literally saying "the blacks." So much for candy coated euphemisms, eh? I find that gringos tend to use the term Afro Americanos. We aren't able use the word negro when describing our new president, I can't quite put my ... read more

"Meester, you vote for Barak Osama or Maaa... uh... Maaa como se dice? Ah jes, McCain." Was my greeting from a few students today. The election buzz didn't quite catch on as much as I had expected. The US government directly effects Honduras almost monthly. You wouldn't know it if you watched CNN, but George Bush meets with Manuel Zelaya quite often. One of my students, Ramon, did ask me about our nation's heroes. I told him that we have quite a few heroes; Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Harriet Tubman, Booker T, Washington, Hulk Hogan, and so on. "Jes, jes I know," He contested, without even flinching at the mention of the Hulkster, "But do joo have like ahh special name for dem?" "Well, we just call them heroes." "Joo don have ... read more

When I moved here to Honduras I made the decision to leave most all my warm clothing at home, in Buffalo. I visited here last December, around Christmas, and the weather was very nice. Usually Honduras is warm during the day and cooler at night time. It is a comfortable cool, sometimes accompanied by a slow breeze. Comayagua tends to be a hotter city than Paraiso, but cooler than Tegus'. However, none of these cities come close to San Pedro Sula. San Pedro can get muggy, being on the coast an all. Here, in Comayagua, the weather has taken a bitter turn into the mid 70's. I never thought I would say this, but it feels cold. A theme I use with my students, "Nothing is good or bad, but by comparison," applies heavily here. I ... read more

This week we are continuing last weeks exams. We spent the majority of last week on RED ALERT so that meant we only had two days of exams. Monday, Tuesday and Friday were spent watching movies and playing video games. The good news is that we all got paid on Wednesday. So I filled my fridge with all sorts of tasty treats. Cranberry juice, club soda, flour tortillas, beans, pepper jack cheese, green peppers, fresh milk, and chocolate. I think I covered all the bases. On Thursday a few of my 10th and 11th graders had a football game. El Alba technically doesn't have a team, however the 11th grade boys do belong to a league and their team name is El Alba... so we almost have a team. The way it was described to me ... read more
