Roatan Dive 4. Mary’s Place. Mary’s Place is an amazing deep crack (70 ft) for 200 ft and a little turn to towards the end. Amazing for wide angle silhouette shot of a diver vertical to the wall. I had plan for the wide angle but the buttons were stocked and couldn’t adjust settings. Also I forgot to turn strobes off. I don’t need them for a silhouette. I felt like a complete amateur. DM Marcus promised me to plan a repeat for us and maybe I can get a shot. I put the bad battery in the camera so ..not many photos for me just a few test shots. 80 ft 58min Ni 31% 84oF 12 lbs + ankl 3mm + Bear 7mm Roatan Dive 5. Newman’s Wall. 2012 12 16 Roatan Dive 1. Check out dive. Coco View has a mandatory rule for new divers: Assist an orientation meeting where they talk about all the rules and procedures, watch a 24 min video that is pretty informative and they top it off with a check out dive and there is no way out of it. I was assigned to a group of about 7 divers all pretty average except for one that kept going up and down to the point that had every body worried. I signaled the DM that I would stay with the group and waited for him while he ascended and assisted him. We went to the left from the entrance towards the Coco View wall. I saw a couple of Hamlets, a lime green mantis (My friend Judy took ... read more

On our last full day on the island, we hired a well experienced and local cabbie (George) to take us around the island from the west end to east end and back. There is really only one road, but much to see. The island is about 2 miles wide and 28 miles long. We first visited the West End, which is the most travelled by tourists. At that end are terminals for cruise ships, shops, diving and other tours, and restaurants. All of these things are especially aimed at the island visitors. There is a nice beach, but not really for swimming due to the boat traffic. For us, nothing to really write home about (but, I guess we are, here) but it is a good place for people to hang. Next we visited the “Mayan ... read more

We are “slothing” it (new word we made up here). We will admit to completely and totally forgetting which day of the week we arrived or any other day since we have been here. We keep forgetting the fact that we need to take a water bottle everywhere and that showering should be a daily event, but at least we remember our names. You can sit here and watch the view for hours. If you wanted to, you could just read a book in the hammock and the book wouldn’t have to be any good at all. We spend part of each day in the top of a tree-house (our room), walking on the beach, watching little kids trying to catch crabs and fish, swimming in the sea and in a cold pool, playing with the ... read more

Why would Floridians travel to a tropical island? Where else would you have a big sea, mostly to yourself, cute fish, an afternoon trade-wind rustling the palm fronds, and new local adventures, all at the same time!!! (Not in Florida!) We taxied it to the airport in San Salvador and hopped on a propeller plane for Roatan, Honduras. See photos. The one-hour plane ride saved us about ten hours of road travel due to the lack of good and fast roads. This island is along the same reef as the one in Belize (Meso-American), but you do not need a boat to get to it. TranquilSeas is the name of our hotel (actually, ecolodge). This place is completely cool. We feel like part of the Swiss Family Robinson. The whole place is basically a tree-house. Our ... read more

Tuesday 30/10/12 – Last night the hundreds of dogs that we see on the roadsides must have come to town to growl, bark, fight and chase each other all night long. Not to be outdone by the howling dogs running riot in the streets, the many roosters spent the night joining in the chorus by wailing at the full moon. The dogs here are amazing, but it is a hard place to visit if you are an animal lover. You can barely ride for 5 minutes in Central America without seeing at least one dog that is usually in pretty bad shape. All are really skinny, all have scars, many are limping with broken or past-broken legs, and many have crooked tails or missing an eye or an ear. The only dogs that aren’t obviously mentally ... read more

Guatemala Lago De Atitlan We departed Antigua and headed for Lago De Atitlan in western Guatemala having heard and read that this lake was a picturesque place to stay in the highlands. The lake is situated amongst several volcanoes and there are several villages dotted around, each offering different vibes from the rough and ready and relatively busy San Pedro to the hippy hangout of San Marcos La Laguna. We pulled up in the usual minibus stuffed full of backpackers and decided to stay the night in San Pedro, our place of arrival. This may have been a slight error as we soon found that San Pedro (or the Guatemalan Phuket as James put it) didn´t have much to offer other than relatively simple accommodation very close to a throng of average bars and restaurants. We ... read more

July 23 - I couldn't manage it, the relaxing. So not a good relaxer. I woke up at 6:30am and repacked, emailed, was sick, etc. The usual morning routine. So I started taking the meds for my stomach. Then I headed upstairs at 7:30 for breakfast and the woman who runs the hotel had already cooked it. Very nice. I waited at 8am for the cab driver who said he would be there, but by 8:10 I just found another, with the help of the same woman. At the port, I bought my round trip ticket for the ferry that would take me to Roatan. It came with a sea sickness tablet, which I almost took. Then I remembered that I have been on boats almost every day of this trip, sometimes several a day. And ... read more

Spending a restless night in what we are sure was a haunted hostel we jumped into the back of a 4x4 Jeep, bumping up and down whilst holding on as tight as we could we arrived at the gorgeous jungle river lodge! White water rafting was an experience, our guide was very adventurous and we are sure that it would not be legal if it were anywhere else but here!! First we started by getting into the water and then he led us up and down massive bolders jumping to and from rocks and even into the white water! We jumped into the water from as high as 6 meters which i must say was very nerve racking! The fact that the rock was verticle and he said that if we dont just run and jump ... read more
