Hey Folks, We're actually in San Pedro, a suburb of San Jose, right now passing a night before heading to the Pacific Coast after our out of the way little jaunt to Cahuita on the Carribean Coast. Getting There As we alluded to in the previous post (new readers it is highly recommended you know the blog history before sinking into new entries), we revamped our plans and decided to catch a ride to the other side of the country with our friends Brian and Alissa. So bright and early we left Monteverde and crawled into the back of the Jimny - a Wrangler/Tracker type of auto that seems necessary if you want to have a chance at all navigating the CR roads.... side note, for a country as progressive in their attitudes and education standards ... read more

I spent the last couple days in the small town of Cahuita. I´m now about 15km southeast in Puerto Viejo. They are both Rasta towns. Lots of raggae. Lots of ganja. Lots of white kids with dread locks trying to fit in among the Carribè and pretending they are not also tourists. I´m planning on leaving on towards Panama tommorrow. I would spend more time but the weather isn´t cooperating. There is a storm system in the Carribean pushing rain and surf into the coast. The normally sky blue carribean water is brown and murky right now. It´s not a big deal. I will be back in March which is the best time to visit. The forecast is calling for rain in the Carribean for the next couple weeks. So I am planning on heading toward ... read more

So, I find myself stuck in this cool little town, unable to force myself to catch a bus to the next place. Every night I make a tentative plan to get up and get a ticket and head to Panama the next day, but something always comes up, and it never happens. I was walking down main street the other night and ran into two girls that graduated from ASU that I head met earlier in the trip, and made plans with them to go take a boat to this organic farm where they are working, but of course, when yesterday came, I bailed and stayed again. I took a super long hike down the beach yesterday, about 11 kilometers, to a deserted beach in between Puerto Viejo and the Gandoca-Manzanillo wildlife refuge. It was breathtaking- ... read more

Checking in from the Carribean coast, chillin in the small town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, just a little ways up from the border of Panama. I got into town a few days ago, and have been just lounging ever since. The town is pretty small, right on the ocean with a huge surf spot, Salsa Brava, right out front. I am staying at the coolest hostel I have ever imagined, Rockin J's, THE place to be down here. There are tons of other travelers staying here, with accomodations ranging from tents, to the hammock hotel, to shared cabins and even a treetop room that you climb 100 feet up to. There are travelers here from all over the world, and English is by far the least used language. Just sitting in the common area you ... read more
