Monday We were followed half-way back from the bakery this morning by a little dog. Guess he liked the smell of fresh bread. When we got back to the room, our very creative maid had made two towel dogs! Walked some of the back streets in town this morning. Saw the cutest little boy playing with a stick and two huge bugs. They were cockroaches, the biggest bugs I have ever seen. I asked if I could take his picture and got a big smile. We walked by a few restaurants found online, just to check them out. Then we sat by the ocean to get a sea breeze. Early afternoon we walked through town again. Music is big here. There is a large music academy in town. You always see kids in the main park ... read more

Sunday Lots of rain last night, but it let up enough this morning to go to the bakery to get a fresh baguette. So good! We got rid of some coins. Bob's pockets were loaded down with colones coins, so much change back from last night's dinner! Ate breakfast on the patio again, with a little dog outside the railing looking in at us. The hotel here is very clean. Maids are very creative.Yesterday our towels were a swan, today they were a basket with real flowers. Took another walk after breakfast. There was a little breeze, but it gets pretty hot by 9:30am. Saw my blue bird again; googled him this time and found out he was a blue-gray tanager. Went to the pool this afternoon to cool off. They had put in some ... read more

Saturday Took an early morning walk on the beach, looking for birds and sand dollars. We heard and saw a couple of green macaws, but we probably won't be able to get a photo. Saw a group watching some baby turtles buried in a hole. Some babies are hatching now. On the way back stopped at the bakery and fruit market for breakfast items. We have a nice patio in front of our room, very peaceful. Breakfast pineapple was delicious. The hotel is very colorful, with a strip of jungle plants down the middle of two sets of units. There is a small restaurant area near the front where you can order breakfast if you wish. Seven hammocks are strung from a center post under a pagoda, with a great ocean view We can hear the ... read more

Friday Last night Minnesota football was televised in Costa Rica! We left one suitcase at Quinta Avanita, some of the items we didn't need in Tortuguero. We wanted to pack lightly. We will stay here again on our last night. Today was our travel day to Tortuguero. We were up early, found a taxi, and had lots of extra time at the bus station. Traffic was heavy, lots of horn honking, lots of people, and many motorcycles. San Jose seemed particularly crowded after four days in the jungle with the monkeys. We picked up our tickets yesterday, about $6 total from San Jose to Cariari, the first leg of our journey. The favorite at the food stalls at the bus station (Caribe--there are about 15 stations spread throughout San Jose) seemed to be rice and beans, ... read more

Getting to Puerto Viejo was pretty straightforward, bus to San Jose and then another bus from just around the corner. We arrived to beautiful sunshine and a much more familiar climate (hot!) On our first morning we headed to Bread and Chocolate for breakfast - and it was super delicious! My mocha came deconstructed so I could make it exactly how I wanted, and Sam and I shared eggs on a homemade bagel and French toast. Very homey food. Afterwards we headed to the beach for an afternoon in the sun, stopping on the way to save little fish that were getting washed up (a futile mission!) We chose a good time to visit, as it was their annual chocolate festival, so our evening was spent sampling delicious chocolate, chocolate ice cream and chocolate brownies. The ... read more

Last day in Coahuila. I had planned to go to the beach one last time before the van picked us up at 1pm but slight stomach cramps dictated I stay close to the loo. Granted, the bubbles of the breaking waves would make a good tummy massage but I feared adding to the flotsam being stirred up by the rip tide. I contented myself with laying in the hammock and listening to the surf. Of course, our shuttle was a half hour late. Clo was pacing and becoming increasingly agitated. The van arrived and away we went. It was a much more comfortable one that that of the way here. Since it was Good Friday, all the locals were at the beach. It stretched from Cahuita all the way up to Limon, something we did not ... read more

Today, Claudette is taking a vacation from vacation. It is a do nothing day for her. For me, vacations are all about doing things. I do enough of nothing in my regular life, so today I am off to Cahuita National Park for a stroll through the jungle bordering the beach. It is not far to go, only a ten minute walk to the other end of town. It opens directly onto a beach. You can hire a guide to point out wildlife or do it on your own. The trail follows the coastline with spurs leading to small secluded beaches. At one point, the trail cuts across a peninsula to give the hiker a since of the real jungle. The signage gives fair warning at some of the beaches that rip tides are present. These ... read more

Today we are better organized. We arrive at the bus depot in plenty of time to catch a ride to the Jaguar Rescue Centre. There had been a hard rain just before dawn but since it is always humid, it didn’t cool things down any. The buses must have been made in China. The seats are not very wide, considering the mean size of female posterior here. Nor is there adequate leg room, even when sitting up straight. Thankfully the bus trip was for less than a half hour. We were let off at the entrance to the centre but were too early for the tour. It was suggested that we hang out at the nearby beach for the next hour. It is a narrow white sand beach (I don’t know at what level the tide ... read more

Slept in till six o’clock. I should have known that this would be a harbinger of calamities to come. A laid-back cuppa, listening to the birds celebrate the rain that fell last night. Since we will be gone most of the day, I decided on a hearty breakfast of bacon & fresh eggs from the market. They were excellent. Tasty with bright orange yoke, rare at home. The jaguar rescue centre was our destination. We arrived at the station just in time to see our bus pull out. This meant that we would miss our tour. Back to our cabin to formulate plan B. Chocolate tour it is. Back to the bus station a second time. We would each look out a different side of the bus for sign for Cocoa Trails. Luckily a German group ... read more
