Saturday Took an early morning walk on the beach, looking for birds and sand dollars. We heard and saw a couple of green macaws, but we probably won't be able to get a photo. Saw a group watching some baby turtles buried in a hole. Some babies are hatching now. On the way back stopped at the bakery and fruit market for breakfast items. We have a nice patio in front of our room, very peaceful. Breakfast pineapple was delicious. The hotel is very colorful, with a strip of jungle plants down the middle of two sets of units. There is a small restaurant area near the front where you can order breakfast if you wish. Seven hammocks are strung from a center post under a pagoda, with a great ocean view We can hear the ... read more

Friday Last night Minnesota football was televised in Costa Rica! We left one suitcase at Quinta Avanita, some of the items we didn't need in Tortuguero. We wanted to pack lightly. We will stay here again on our last night. Today was our travel day to Tortuguero. We were up early, found a taxi, and had lots of extra time at the bus station. Traffic was heavy, lots of horn honking, lots of people, and many motorcycles. San Jose seemed particularly crowded after four days in the jungle with the monkeys. We picked up our tickets yesterday, about $6 total from San Jose to Cariari, the first leg of our journey. The favorite at the food stalls at the bus station (Caribe--there are about 15 stations spread throughout San Jose) seemed to be rice and beans, ... read more

Geo: 10.5414, -83.5021Costa Rica 1 - 8 AprilAt the end of the previous blog we had arrived at Trogon Lodge, San Gerardo de Dota. What a contrast with all our previous stops. It was very cold at night and although the sun shone during the day there was only about 3 to 4 hours that were pleasantly warm. We never managed to be comfortable despite the fires and hot water bottles.Plus, we were at an altitude of 2,500 metres, rising higher as soon as we left the Lodge to walk and increasing to 3,500 metres at the highest point.I had not realised how little oxygen there was at this altitude. The first morning we went on the early morning Quetzal hunt and had to climb a hill. I raced up with the guide, not wanting to ... read more

We left Cahuita early to catch the bus to Limon (1 hour), then took a short taxi to the port of Moin to take our 4 hour boat to Tortuguero. The boat ride was wonderful, more like an excursion than just transport as the waterways through the jungle were really pretty and we saw lots of wildlife along the way. Tortuguero is even hotter than Cahuita with the same level of humidity, I'm not sure I could ever acclimatize to this. The village itself is within the national park of the same name and is completely cut off from the rest of Costa Rica by the many waterways through the jungle, so no cars here which is wonderful and the only way to get in and out is by small boat. The village (population 1200) is ... read more

Cosat Rica 2013: Day 3:Tortuguero Day 2: After our late night of unsuccessfully looking for turtles, we woke up a bit later than usual... at 7:30am. Today is our 39th wedding anniversary, so we plan on doing and eating whatever we want to. We'd already told the lodge staff we wouldn't be eating dinner in the lodge. Around 8:30 or so, one of the lodge staff knocked on our door and asked if we would be eating breakfast today, I assume because it was nearing the end of the breakfast service. We told him thank you, but no, we don't usually eat breakfast. I should mention that the room includes breakfast. Oh well. We had a water taxi pick us up around 9am to go into the village for the day, and evening. Tortuguero village is ... read more

Costa Rica Day 2:Alajuela to Tortuguero: After a decent cup of coffee at the hostel, we headed to the bus stop to start our trip to Tortuguero. Rather than bore you with the details of our extremely long trip to Tortuguero, I'll just to a brief synopsis. At right around 7am, we boarded a "Station Wagon" bus to San Jose. The trip took about 20 minutes and cost about 600 Colones each. From the Estacion Atlantico we grabbed a taxi to the Estacion Caribeno, paying 1,500 for the trip. We bought two tickets on the next bus to Cariari at 9am, at 1,600 Colones each, with almost an hour to wait. After a much longer, but more interesting, we pulled into the new Cariari bus station around 10:45 and boarded our final bus soon after 11am. ... read more

The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach. So I woke up bright and early, after a long and much needed sleep to catch my shuttle to Tortuguero. Tortuguero is a national park on the northeast coast of Costa Rica where giant sea turtles lay their eggs. As I learned on my journey there, these turtles are special because none of them are recorded ever laying their eggs anywhere else. These turtles always return to the beach they were born at to lay their eggs. As it turned out, I was on the tour with two other couples. This is fine, and unsurprising, as I opted for the slightly more expensive tour. It seemed worth it because it included meals and onward trasnport to La Fortuna. If I had to buy these in addition to the cheaper tours it would be about the same ... read more

The vote is in and it is unanimous.. we all thnk this is one of the best days of our lives. Howler monkeys did their job and awoke us at - no before - dawn. At about 6 in the morning we went out on the balcony only to be greeted by chestnut mandibled toucans. We strolled around the grounds - no more than a tiny clearing in the jungle and saw the iconic keel-billed toucan - just like the Fruit Loops one only more alive! along with oodles of amazing jungle species. After an early brekkie we hopped on an open boat with Norton and headed off deep in little natural canals into the rainforest. My god. Oodles of close-up views of howler, spider and capuchin monkeys (the little white faced ones used in films ... read more
