Hola! So the traveling was kind of rough despite the beautiful views. Oh but before I start, I should preface this witht he fact that I am 1) not a good typist and 2) a horrible speller. So please forgive and forget. OKay well so the trip was not so good because I was nervous and when i'm nervous I get hot. So when I landed I probably had a thousand things racing through my mind, What next? Do i exchange money here? Where are my bags? Am i going to look really dumb carrying two big suitcases, my packed full backpack, and a purse? (yeh probably) Would my family even be here to pick me up?? Hallelujah and thank the Lord that when I got outside it only took my a few minutes to find ... read more

(entered on 3/2/11) Relatively uneventful flight direct flight with JetBlue from Orlando to San Jose Costa Rica. Very strong turbulence about a half hour out of Miami - Ridley commented that it was a bumpier ride than the rollercoasters we were on the day before at Univeral Studios. Arrived in San Jose, had a fun argument with the porters at the airport who insisted we needed to pay them to carry our bags 20 feet to the taxis (first experience with using sign language and bad Spanish to try and communicate). Took taxi to Heredia to the house of a Costa Rican friend who graciously welcomed us. Dumped our bags and headed back by taxi into San Jose (very slow in rush hour) to sort out our volunteer program with ASVO. Back to Heredia to ... read more

Hola! I know it's been a while since I've blogged, but I've been slammed with homework and kept forgetting to upload a new "hello". =) Starting from where I left off, the next weekend I went to San Jose with Miriam to check out the sights. It was definitely different from Heredia. Lots more people, different foods, great shops, etc. I saw the 1st Hotel of Costa Rica and the National Theater. Both were absolutely gorgeous! We walked down the main boulevard passing tons of restaurants, museums, artists and performers in the street...it was a blast! We ended up at this giant tent on one street full of great vendors. This was the one place I managed to spot a few other tourists! (I could tell from the blonde hair and rough spanish speaking) After a ... read more

So this weekend I really relaxed after the exams, since one set of classes just got finished. I hope to find out the grades soon although I dont think they would be very bad since I studied a lot especially for the Spanish Composition exam. Crossing my fingers here. Anyways on Saturday I ended up going to a reunion of my tico mom's family. It was amazing (and crazy). The reason we were going was the celebration of my mom's mom's death. My mom has 11 brothers and sisters, and about 40 or so nephews and nieces, and then their children as well. It was complete chaos but in a good way. I met so many people and cant remember any of their names. Talk about fun! That was all I really did this past weekend, ... read more

What a great weekend! Well minus the fact that the Canes lost pretty bad... Saturday morning Miriam and I headed out close to 9:00am to check out the fresh fruit market. It was amazing! There were at least 2 miles of farmers set up in tents with every kind of fruit and/or vegetable you can think of! Miriam brought an extra "bolsa" with her to place the things we decided to purchase. We bought at least 30 pounds worth of vegetables and fruits. One of the main items Miriam wanted to buy was cauliflower. Of course I asked why and she began to explain the process of a typical Tico dish she wanted to show me for dinner. So I didn't question her anymore and we continued down the 2 mile trek. After gathering all the ... read more

B-E-A-U-tiful day!! The sun was out all day and the breeze was amazing! You couldn't have asked for a better day. Oky took me to her house today for class for something a little different. On our way up to her house we stopped at a bakery to grab some bread for cafe in the afternoon. Most Ticos have coffee and bread for an afternoon snack. The bread here is unbelievable! All made fresh in the morning. I couldn't even tell you how much bread we bought. haha Just like our "fruit tasting" day, this was our bread tasting day. She wanted me to try every kind of pastry. We got a huge cuban looking loaf of bread for sandwiches, 3 different kinds of pan dulce (sweet bread), and then 2 more breakfast type pastries. Lets ... read more

Hi All! Sorry I didn't post yesterday, Oky assigned me a bunch of homework which kept me up all hours of the night! As far as yesterday went, I had a pretty normal day. Breakfast with Miriam then class with Oky at 9am. However, after class Miriam took me to the gym so I could register for a month membership. Very exciting right? But the gym is for only women which I found to be pretty neat. I guess it's similar to a Curves in the U.S. Miriam also took me to check out how much and when some dance classes would be. I REALLY want to learn how to salsa and meringue while I'm here! Plus I hear it's a great work out! =) Afterwards, Miriam and I grabbed some lunch at a cute surfers ... read more

My first true weekend in Costa Rica was nice and relaxing. Maria, Tom's mom, came down to the city on Friday to show me how to take the bus up to their house. When I arrived Friday afternoon with Maria, Bruno and Max (the new puppies) were beyond excited! I think I managed to receive 20 extra showers over the span of the entire weekend. But I had a blast playing with them! I love big dogs and I don't get to hang out with any when I'm down in the city. Ticos are extremely afraid of large dogs. If a Tico owns a dog it's very small. A beagle, poodle, jack russell, etc. So it's very nice to spend time with a black lab and 2 Rottweilers. We had a great pasta and meatball dinner ... read more

What an amazing day! I woke up to the sun shining through my window! It was so nice out I even got to wear a dress to class today! haha Class with Oky today wasn't the same as the rest of this week. She had something else planned for me...it was "Try EVERY fruit you've never had before" day. We walked to the central market in Heredia which took about 10 minutes from school. Pretty quick walk, but you have to be careful because you might get swiped by a car. Driving is much different here. Not only do people not look where they are going, but there aren't many stop lights so cars just...well...GO. haha Once arriving at el mercado, Oky pointed out every different type of fruit. She informed me whether the fruit was ... read more

Hello All. My day was perfect. I didn't have to wake up until 7:30 this morning because Oky changed our class time to 9am now. Miriam made me a tamale con frijoles which made my taste buds happier than ever! I can't wait until Miriam teaches me how to make tamales so I can make them when I get home for my entire family and show their taste buds who's boss. =) So not only was breakfast amazing, but the sun decided to show its face today. I actually got to wear my sunnies today! Class was the usual. A nice 4 hours of nothing but Spanish conversation with Oky. We worked on irregular verbs today. If you ask me there are WAY to many ways that 1 single word can be said. Pronunciation is extremely ... read more
