Well its still winter here in Costa Rica which means one thing… RAIN! It has been raining just about every day down here. The mornings are usually beautiful and just like clockwork, everyday, as I leave school to walk home the sky lets go and it pours. However, we still find time to enjoy the country. A few weekends ago we, Travis, Steve, Ali, and I, made our way to the Caribbean beach town of Puerto Viejo. We first left Tres Rios bright and early at 4:30 am so we could get to San Jose to catch the 6:00 am bus. The bus ride was about four hours to the port town of Limon and then another bumpy hour south to Puerto Viejo. When we got into PV we had to find a play to stay ... read more

It seems to be one of the great laws of the universe that nothing goes as planned. This is not always a bad thing as I have learned in the past and was reminded of a couple weekends ago. The plan was this: Travis and I were going to meet up with a group of teachers from Saint Clare on Friday night to cook dinner and to present a slideshow of pictures from Travis’ trip to the top of Chirripo, Costa Rica’s highest peak at 12,530 ft. Summiting Chirripo is an event that many Costa Ricans spend months training for and then must enter a lottery to obtain permits. So Travis and I went to the market after school to pick up the groceries we were going to use to make the food. Everything was going ... read more

Level 3/4 rapids.....living life on the edge! This was a day of fun and hard work. We set out at 9am and were paired up with other english speaking tourists. Once all the obligatory rules were out of the way we hit the water. Lynne was in the front seat (so strange) but apparently the power players are at the back which was my seat. We hit the first rough water and we all went wow! some one asked the guide what rating was that? The reply came '' Nothing, we havent hit the rapids yet, that was just some small rocks''. So after a big breath we resumed our stance on the edge of the boat. We are sorry there are not any action shots but it is hard to click and paddle at the ... read more

Well, it’s been just about two weeks since I arrived here in Costa Rica and everything is going great. I have been enjoying my time at Saint Clare very much. I spent most of my classroom time last week observing my two cooperating teachers, Alexandra and Rebecca. Both were originally biologists who found that they enjoyed teaching science just as much as they like doing research. They are both excellent teachers as well as great mentors. Today was my first day of teaching and it was somewhat on the fly. Alexandra wasn’t feeling well so she had me take over the class. It was so much fun. The students here often have a lot of energy, some might say too much, but if you can harness that energy the classroom just lights up. I had all ... read more

And so the trip begins. I arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica on Tuesday, August 19th. The day started early with an alarm clock at 3:30am so that I could get everything ready for my 7:00 flight. The first flight to Charlotte, NC went really well as I slept for all but the last half hour of it. I then had to catch a flight from Charlotte to San Jose, but before we could board the plane we had to from a huge line to check passports. I thought I would be standing there forever when the lady at the podium called my name over the loud speaker. "Great, what did I do now." Apparently a woman and her children were placed in seperate seats so they asked if I would switch to another seat. Of ... read more

OK, so I guess we will have one more blog post before we go. This is about my (Steve's) trip to Cerro Chirripo - the tallest peak in Costa Rica. I and 2 of my friends here in Costa Rica (Kilon from North Carolina and John from England) decided to do the adventure together - without wives and children. The trip began with a 4-plus hour drive to the town of San Gerardo de Rivas. This included waiting for 30 minutes at a dead stop while road crews worked on cleaning up from landslides a few days earlier. The town is located in a green valley shadowed on all sides by steep hills, with the beautiful roaring Rio Chirripo running through it. Before dinner, we left 2 big backpacks loaded with sleeping bags, extra clothes, and ... read more

Les francais, vous savez comment ca marche maintenant... Descendez et ca causera dans une langue que vous comprenez! -------------------- I got to San Isidro de El General on Sunday, and what a day to get there! San Isidro is the patron saint of farmers here, and he is celebrated in San Isidro (no need to explain why here!) for the whole week of May, 15th- which means that on Sunday, I was welcomed by horses, and lots of them! There was a fair going on, it was really great to see a real typical Costa Rican fiesta happening in front of my very eyes! I had however to invent a husband for myself for the occasion, as a Tico decided that he had a crush and proceeded to let me know that his heart hurt because ... read more

English speakers, you know where to find the English version...

Hello All! On Yesterday and the day before I rented a bicycle for the afternoon. On Tuesday I went to Tapanti National Park which was a really tough uphill bike ride and got to see some of the mountains and the river that flows into Orosi. I went with a girl I met from Colorado who was studying spanish this week. On Wednesday we did another killer ride to the Ujarras Ruins which I had seen before but wanted to ride past some places that I had only visited with a driver. On both days we had great weather and I got a lot of sun, even with lots of sunscreen. Today is my last full day. I had classes in the morning and I had a nice lunch with my pal, Karen, from Colorado. Then ... read more
