This morning was more quiet at the house and everyone was up and moving at 6 am instead of the usual 4-5 am. Luis F was up walking for 1 hr and 20 minutes for exercise while I was working on my homework still. I never competed my assigned composition but I did several pages of exercises in my book and lots of sentences that were assigned. Amada made a nice breakfast with gallo pinto (a national dish of beans and rice, onions, cilantro and other spices as well as eggs, juice and coffee. The boys were still sleeping when we were eating and only Luis (the 2nd) was up before I left for my 9am class. This morning Tim and I were the only 2 students having classes. Our teachers showed us pictures of their ... read more

Hello everyone! I am at an internet cafe hoping to upload my blog diaries and some photos but my unpredictable computer did not save these and so they are not on my flash drive now. So, I will try again a little later. I really want to post a blog since there has been no time over the last three days with our latest bus travel and tours that we did of the Turrialba Volcano and the Guayabo Archeological Dig. Also, Tim and I are traveling to Parismina today and we do not know if we will have any internet there at all. We will be there until June 3 when we travel back to San Jose then onto Alajuela (near the airport) and catch planes on June 4. Stay tuned for another blog later today, ... read more

Class today was much better than the last two days. I had better mental energy and my teacher and Karen covered a lot of material about the past and imperfect cases. She gave me lots of homework since we have no class on Friday. I have stuff to review and new stuff to work on. The last 30 minutes of class the three teachers got Marcos, Tim and me together to play a game like charades. Each teacher wrote something on the board and two of us had to describe in Spanish clues to that the other person could figure out what was written. it was nice because all of us have been doing stuff together after class and it made the time go by quickly. After class Tim and I went to the bar to ... read more

We arrived in Orosi on Monday afternoon and Tim and I got checked in at the language school. I went to stay with the family that I had met last year and Tim went to stay at the hostel. I really like the family but with Tim here, I kind of wish I had made arrangements to stay at the hostel, because I have little time to visit with the family. Since Tim is not much of a cook we asked Amada if she would make dinner every night for Tim and then he would get a short visit with a family every night. She was happy to do this and Tim gave her some money. One of the workers at the hostel, Adrian, told Tim that he had the best room in the hostel. Tim ... read more

Here are some pictures of Nano. This morning the twins from Florida went with their Spanish teacher to see Nano during their class time. We heard that Nano was quite excited to see these girls and their teachers. Tim's teacher said that Nano took his shirt off and was showiing off for them. Tomorrow Tim is going river rafting with both of them which he is quite happy about since they are so cute and nice. For some reason our friend Marcos backed out, but Tim thinks he will be able to handle them both on his own. Tonight there is a hot tubbing party and hopefully i can get some pictures of these girls so that everyone can see them. ... read more

Today we arranged for our class to start at 2 pm until 5 so that we could rent bicycles and ride 14 km to the Tapanti. Yesterday we spoke with the couple in town from Switzerland who rent bicycles and motorcycles and they had bikes we could use the next day. We invited our friend Marcos and went at 7 in the morning. It was a long uphill ride to the park and when we arrived we realized that we didn't have time to walk the trails and return back for class. So we just visited with the rangers for a while and visited some exhibits on animals in the park that they had on display. Afterwards we rode back on the bikes. It was so much easier returning than arriving. We stopped quickly to see ... read more

Hi again! Tim is having an afternoon fresco at the bar and I am uploading some more pictures from the house of the family I am staying with. They are really nice and the kids are really sweet. However, close quarters and a stuffy house with minimal ventilation is getting to me a little. ... read more

Late last night Tim arrived from Germany via Newark, New Jersey. I was able to check out the flight status online at the hostel and then I went my bus to the airport to get him. There were several flights arriving at the same time, so immigration was busy and there was much confusion for me not being very fluent in Spanish. But I did find him and we grabbed his luggage and took the bus back to the central part of San Jose. We made it back to the hostel without a problem and Tim was given a room on the second floor near me. Unfortunately for him, his room did not have a person of inspiration on the walls. But he was quite tired and was happy to have a clean peaceful room. Since ... read more

One of the first Spanish phrases I learned here in Costa Rica was: “Que Rico!” This means “that’s delicious!” It’s no surprise I hear this sentence a lot, because Costa Rican food is really delicious. Costa Rica is famous for a lot of delicacies and one of them is chocolate. There is a big variety of kinds of chocolates made in Costa Rica, such as “Sibu chocolates.” These chocolates are handmade from Costa Rican-grown cacao and come in flavors such as spice, ginger, caramel, black pepper, vanilla and espresso. Another category of chocolate found here is “organic chocolate.” These are made of organic cacao and organic sugar. Organic chocolates also come in a wide variety of tastes: ginger, macadamia, cinnamon, as well as dark chocolate. You can find great chocolate shops all over Costa Rica. Among ... read more
