Sunday 1st We arrive at Lima airport around 10.30pm and it takes another hour to clear customs and immigration. Another lot of forms filled in only to be thrown away without even being looked at. I'm getting pretty fed up with the unnecessary forms. We try to find out how to get to our over night hotel the airline are providing but no one knows where we should go ! Eventually we are told to just cross the road and book into the Ramada Hotel. The airline have reserved us a room but without any instructions for us. By now it's 12.30 and we're dead tired and fall into bed. Up at 7.30 and after a quick breakfast it's back to the airport for the flight to San Jose in Costa Rica. We get a shock ... read more

We are off on our first snowbird type holiday-one month in Costa Rica.Day one was the usual SSI get up early for the ferry gig, then to the airport and wait 4 hours… We got in to Phoenix about 630 PM and shuttled to the fabulous Econolodge-very handy place and excellent value. In the morning, I got three great bird shots with the new camera (Eurasion Collared Dove, Fan Tailled Grackle and a Northern Mockingbird) After the non-gourmet breakfast, it was back to the airport to catch the 1.10 PM US Air flight to San Jose. (5 more fun filled hours) The new air travel scam is to sell you a reasonably priced ticket, then hammer you with luggage fees. We paid about $800 each for the return tickets and then had to pay another $112 ... read more

Costa Rica 2013: Day 14: Manuel Antonio to Alajuela: We had no problem getting to and catching our direct bus to San Jose at 9:30am. I don't think I mentioned that the tickets cost 4465 colones each, or about 9 dollars. You can also get the same bus from Quepos, after it departs Manuel Antonio, but I figured getting on earlier was better. The direct bus was almost direct, stopping only in Quepos briefly, a restroom/refreshments stop about 2 hours into the trip, and once in San Jose before reaching the terminal. From the terminal, we grabbed a taxi to take us to the TUASA bus terminal for the trip from San Jose to Alajuela. The first taxi guy tried to tell us 3,000 colones, and when my wife questioned that he changed it to 2,000, ... read more

Costa Rica: Day 1: Our 6am flight from Pensacola to Atlanta went fine, other than the fact that it was 6am in the morning! We arrived in Atlanta with over an hour to spare before boaring the flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. After getting the obligatory coffee, from McDonalds, we found out they wouldn't be serving a meal during the flight, so went back to McDonalds for carryout breakfast. It turned out that they did serve a light meal consisting of a small turkey and cheese sandwich, cookies, and drinks. Unfortunately, the in-flight movie was Guilt Trip, which we had just recently rented from Redbox. We arrived in San Jose on time, at about 11:49, their time. They are in the Central timezone like Pensacola, but they don't observe Daylight Savings Time, so the 4-hour ... read more

Semana Santos Interesting words: In translation it means the “Holy Week” in Spanish. We have experienced the week of Easter - Costa Rican style. Let me tell you these Tico's know how to do it up right....but let me back up a bit because we were supposed to be in Nicaragua for Easter. Well Nicaragua didn't happen. The last days the kids were here we all ate at a "soda" for breakfast. These sodas are where the locals eat. They serve good, cheap “typical food”. Well 3 out of 5 of us suffered some gastrointestinal distress later. Some of us got over it in a few days, others a few days longer and then there was me. Two weeks and a doctor visit later I am just starting to feel normal again. When we dropped everyone ... read more

On our last day, we made the drive down from Monteverde. This time, it wasn't nearly as bad. The unpaved section seemed much shorter and we were much more comfortable, having driven on dirt roads all week. Despite the night's rain, the roads were not muddy in the least - quite dry in fact. However, the drive felt much longer, because I think we all wanted to get back to Hotel La Rosa de America and jump in the pool. We got back to Barrio San Jose de Alajuela around noon. The first order of business was finding lunch. Just down the road, we found Las Delicias del Maiz. It looked a bit like a tourist attraction, in the same way that Bugaboo Creek might to a non-American, but was wholely a family destination for Costa ... read more

Last day in Costa Rica and how to sum it all up? I had a perfect paragraph composed on the bus but now that I am actually writing, I can’t remember how I summed up ten weeks in a few sentences. It probably listed a few of the highlights like white-water rafting and the Chocolate Tour this weekend, maybe mentioned the amazing experience we all had at the Colegio Santa Teresa for four weeks, where the staff and the students were so good to us and it was very hard to leave. We’ll never forget Ana, our host mother and her son Kenneth, especially after this evening when Ana invited her whole family (four sisters and a great many nieces and nephews) to her house to meet us and wish us well on our travels. Her ... read more

My flight doesn't leave until just under two hours! The taxi dropped me off here about an hour and a half ago. Way earlier than I needed to. So I've walked a bunch, shopped a little and ate a typical Costa Rican breakfast at Burger King! Basically that means it includes beans and rice. For lunch yesterday Barb took me out to Fiestas de las Pupusas. I had never had a Pupusa before...I did like it. It's a typical El Salvadorean dish that's has a soft outer corn shell and it's stuffed with beans, cheese, and or pork. It's quite thin so there isn't much filling. The outer shell is thicker that corn tortillas. I also had my favorite, guanabana juice. So I've been up for some 6+ hours and haven't even flown anywhere. A nap ... read more

For the record, this is the first entry of our trip, but we will go back and fill in what we have done so far. Current status - living with our host family in Alajuela, attending Colegio Santa Teresa, a private school (K-12) where the boys are taking classes in Spanish and English (and wearing smart uniforms) and Dianne ad Chris are volunteering doing whatever is needed. Chris is at home for the third day in a row after a stomach upset and so has been unable to deliver his presentation on airplanes that he has been preparing for the last couple of weeks. Oh well. Rory has also missed three days of school and has gone to the doctor, who thinks he has strep throat as well as an upset stomach that had him worshipping ... read more
