When the rocks started to fly, I thought for sure Willy would be pissed. As it turned out... well, here's what happened. Adventures on the south east side of Aruba require a certain amount of improvisation. This morning we decided we would head out into the "cunucu," or countryside, for a little picnic during the afternoon hours. Normally it would be too hot for this but Willy, my local friend, insisted he knew a spot that had interesting caves in which we could stay out of the worst of the sun. (Willy is an older fellow who worked on and near the ocean his whole life. He is originally from Holland and decided to retire to Aruba where he bought a little house.) So, at Willy's behest a bunch of us packed coolers full of food ... read more

Aruba. Town of Savaneta. This was the first capital of this desert island I affectionately refer to as the rock. The island is a rock, a wierd combination of brittle granite and worn coral and sand. There are tall cactus and scrub brush like the American West but also divi trees blown to the west by the reliable trade winds that brought Europeans here (and to the rest of this side of the world) all those years ago. Savaneta would be considered a small town somewhere in the United States. There are no buildings taller than a couple of stories. There are small groceries, a couple of gas stations, a bank branch, and a bunch of lottery shacks. In terms of commercial enterprise, you'll find a bakery, an auto parts store, a strip of retail outlets ... read more

Greetings! It's been more than ten years since I first reached the shores of the island of Aruba, Dutch Caribbean. Most people know this place as a honeymoon spot, or a place to buy a timeshare. Predictable weather, friendly people who speak English, and plenty of amenities make it a favorite tourist stop for both airlines and cruiseships from the U.S. and around the world. My visits began with an invitation from a pair of friends who owned houses there for many years. I stayed in the big hotels because their houses were always full of family. After several years of "that end of the island," I drifted south, to "the other side." I befriended many regular visitors and locals in the process. My dear friend, Charles Brouns, Jr. (RIP), asked me to write a little ... read more

The infamous Aruba trip where Greg and I drank and almost got killed being driven around by the crazy taxi drivers. The casino's were fun but any place where they drop your cards on the ground and don't call it a misdeal freaks me out to this day. The day started with Getting up early and getting picked up by a car we had ready to take us to the airport. Greg and I were joined by his mom and her friend who were also going to the island but spending their time at another hotel. We got to the airport and through the counter quickly. And then got to sit on the plane for an hour waiting to take off. We got airborne soon after and made a pit stop in Maryland to pick up ... read more
