Luxury of two flights from Shangri La to Kumning through to Guilin saved our sanity but not our pockets, but it was worth it saving 15 hrs by bus and 11 hours by train compared to 3 hrs it took us. Avoiding the thunder clouds and turbulence the only pitfalls of the journey. A massive difference in temperature, 35C in Guilin from 14C in Shangri La. No electric blankets in the Flowers YH! We arrived late and toured the city the next day before travelling by bus to Yangshou 1.5hrs south of Guilin. Main purpose of staying in Guilin was to book and buy a train ticket to Shenzen(half hour outside Hong Kong, our last stop in China.) Up at 6am to queue for a ticket...success. We spent our first hour on the number 2 bus, I ... read more

They've moved the long distant bus station in Kunming to the north west from the near the train station.I thought I was being clever booking a place to stay near the station so as to book ahead for the next leg,but unfortunately it took us 2 hours to find the right bus to get to the new one. After the train journey the night before we were exhausted but successful having purchased our 10 hour long bus tickets to Lijiang. We stayed in the old Naxi town in Lijiang. Noticeably the air quality was cleaner at 2300m and more a risk of rain!,more on that later. The famous Tiger Leaping Gorge is only 3 hrs away and is one of the trips to do. We decided not to go from here but potentially Shangri La further ... read more

To save time we flew from Xian to Chengdu in 75 mins. instead of 18 hours on a sleeper we treated ourselves. Taxi took us to near the centre of this small(4 million)city to some old style narrow traffic free alleys to find our digs for the next 3 days at the Dragon Town Youth Hostel. The streets had been repaired since the last earthquake in 2008,the alley looked very smart and fresh but still with an authentic feel, bar all the tourists. The temperature had dropped from Xian to low 30's but at 500m alt. and 600km further south the climate is humid. So this is a very green region, the vegetation very flush, ideal to breed Pandas. This is one of the main reasons to visit Chengdu, the other is to arrive or leave on ... read more

15 hours on the train we arrived in the province of Shaanxi at Xi'an train station. It said in the guide its one of the busiest, well it is bedlam. I had booked at the Bell Tower YH and there was a girl there with our name who met us and passed us onto another man who we had to follow to a minibus which was parked quite away from the station. There was 8 of us who got the bus which dropped everybody off at their hostels, not us.Because of a one way street he pointed us in the right direction to walk! We got there eventually to find that we were put in the 5th floor with no lift! But it had the best view dead center of the old city opposite the Bell Tower, all big ... read more

A very fast ferry carrying about 500 passengers glided us effortlessly through hot mist on a calm Yellow sea from Dalian towards Yantai in 3 .5 hours. Once arrived I decided to stretch the legs and give the taxis a miss and walk to our hotel... 30mins later we checked in! Yantai is famous for having the first and oldest winery which makes Changyu wine, we've tasted it when we did a tour at the Culture museum - not bad. There's not a great deal to do in the city, but we found a piece of green for a walk and some exercise to train us for our big climb in Tai'an. Nasham Park is just like most chinese city parks, but this one backs onto some hills which had numerous tracks up to pavillions. We chose ... read more

We might be taking more long distance buses from now on, maybe we were lucky? Much more comfortable and cleaner than the train ,quicker too by 2 hours from Dandong down to Dalian. The motorway was a toll one which was deserted and smooth. Once in the bus station we took a taxi 15 mins down to the coast and our hotel for the first 2 nights. We stayed in the CTI Hotel, a tired chinese tourist tower block. Our room was 14th floor and very smelly! Excited about the Fujiazhuang Beach we explored nearby discovering that the beach front was getting a revamp(we miss Tiree). We also took a cable car that went up and back very slowly and we couldn't get off at the top, good views of the zoo below and the surrounding ... read more

We travelled again by train(sleeper 18 hrs)down the east of Liaoning Province to the Port town of Dandong. This journey was made more fun by a hiking group we met from Shenyang who we shared Duck and beer, well I did. Dandong has a very smart station with a huge statue of Mao greeting us. The main reason to coming here was to do "The Wall" as we missed this out in Beijing. Tiger Wall or the The Hushan Wall is 20km north of Dandong. There is a huge Korean influence here because of the Freedom bridge which links North Korea and China and is the main export /import link. The other bridge next door to the Freedom is called the Broken Bridge. It was blown up by the americans and only the Chinese half exists,we walked ... read more

Wednesday the 16th was a festival holiday in China for the Dragon Boat Festival. The owners of the Woodland Youth Hostel invited us for lunch at their parents house in the back streets of Baihe. Luckily Helena and Lynn teach English at school, so conversation wasn't to bad. We ate homemade Dumplings and boiled eggs from their hens, they also have a superb veg garden and a large guard dog!Our legs were sore from sitting on the floor called a Kung. Thank you Zheng Family for your hospitality. ... read more

We travelled through lovely countryside full of rolling forests to arrive in Baihe from Tonhgua.Baihe would be our base for exploring the Changbaishan National Park famous for Heaven Lake which shares its border of Korea and is at 2100 m and 373m deep, and supposedly has a monster like our Loch Ness!. The town is about 20km from the nearest Park gate and is the closest town to the park, which is 240,000 Hectares. We were only going to stay 3 nights but had to settle for 5 nights 6 days as we couldn't get a sleeper ticket out until the 16th because its the Dragon Boat Festival in China this week and everyone takes 3 days off.Our digs for the stay was at the Woodlands Youth Hostel which has been very enjoyable. The familiy that runs the ... read more

A 10.30 sleeper from Beijing to Shenyang capital of Liaoning province, arrived at 7.00am and tried to hail 6 taxis without success. None of them would take us to the Shenyang YH, don't know why, maybe language barrier. We ended up walking most of the way. Stayed 3 nights and visited the Imperial Palace,Botanical gardens and on the 3rd day Beiling Park to the North Tomb. We left again by train, early 7am,crossing into Tongue 160 km north in the province of Jilin. One night in a chain cheapy and another train to our main destination for the next 5 days Baihe which is only 200km from Vladivostok. Shenyang is not geared up for the tourists like Beijing, but the sites were the only highlight of our stay there. Oh and the Lao Bian Dumpling Restaurant which has been open ... read more
