Intriguing history, amazing beaches, world-class hotels I love visiting Crete, especially a bit off season, when it's much less crowded, but the weather's still great. There's a lot of truly relaxing, world-class hotels. You can find the best deals on sites that aggregate offers, such as holidare.com.
Beautiful framing A lovely photo that I could imagine seeing in a travel magazine one day. Glad that you avoided any safety problems in Athens, may have been different if you decided to wear a "I love Angela Merkel" shirt during your time in the city.
We always look forward to your blogs! Greece still remains my favorite country. It is like living in a postcard. Particularly loved the photo of the mobile phone and the mule. We have not been there since 2003 and would love to return. Looking forward to your next installment. We enjoyed our time in Crete.
Amalfi! Was getting a bit nervous in the reading that you didn't like the Amalfi Coast....but, sounds like you 'got it' once you took it all in. Still one of the top 5 spots we have ever been to....the sheer magnitude of the mountains and houses intermixed was breathtaking. We took a bus down the crazy, twisty turns of the mountain side and had to reverse to get around a couple of turns and we even clipped a passing vehicle around another, but all in a day in the life there! Neither the driver of the bus nor the other vehicle even stopped to check out the damage! It was an experience, but well worth the prize of the amalfi coast at the end.
Greenland Unfortunately, no :( We missed northern Norway (due to a hurricane) and Greenland (due to too many icebergs and too high of swell). The shipmates, in general, were pretty let down, but we did hit Newfound Land and New Brunswick, on the way back to NY. It was a neat cruise overall, but we really missed Greenland. We absolutely LOVED Iceland. One of the greatest places we've been to. Wide open, as you know, and lovely setting. Weather was perfect and already planning on returning. Loving the blogs....can't wait for the next one. We, too, hope the old guy is doing okay after the fall down the steps :-( Good that you were there to lend a hand...
"Nice" one ! Very entertaining & fun blog that definitely grasp the vibe of Nice & great poem too (that was a pleasant surprise when reaching the end of the blog!)
As a side note, no worries for most French too (and i am one of them) you need to have sand on the beach, only in places where there is only rocks people would pretend it is perfectly normal! safe travel :-)
Poem, pounds and sand Excellent poem, Penny, had me smiling through it. Great photos as usual--that harbor shot is a knock-out! I spent a year traveling around Europe and easily put on 10 pounds. Outside the Alps and the Dolomites, I just meandered, munched and billowed out. I too was shocked at the stone beach so would take the train to the sand beach at Cannes. May the sun be with you!
Ahhhh So does Annecy far outshine Colmar and Eguishiem?? Sounds like it, although they were very gorgeous too!
Did you deliberately put the reflection shot in upside-down? Am I paying attention, or have I made a mistake?
All the photos are Gorgeous!! Particularly love the light reflections on Penny's leg!!!
Thanks for the photo of the Yeates' with the Davis'. So good that you could meet up!
Thanks for another visit to your wonderland of travel. xxx
Gary and Penny, from the beginning... Again. Round the world for a year in 07 and we've decided it's time once more. So packing up the house, the jobs, selling the cars and up up and away, this time with no return ticket and no fixed itinerary. A smidgin reckless, sure, but what the hell. May as well indulge in a few passions before the last great journey in who knows when.
Stay tuned and please stay in contact, cause whilst we love seeing what the rest of the world has to offer, we also love receiving news from home base.... full info
