Amazing
What a time you are having guys. And thanks for sharing your experiences. We're travelling vicariously with you to places we may not choose for ourselves. When are you home? Fiona and Dougiexx
17th December 2012

Not quite sure
Should be home I a couple of months. Just arrived in Sri Lanka and have to try and get our India visas today but we don't have any room left in our passports so that may not happen which we will be home sooner rather than later.

Hospitality
I've always heard that folks in the Middle East are unfailingly hospitable to travelers. Maybe that's why Amir wanted to share his dentures with you. You know, just in case your teeth were tired.

There's an angle
I'm sure his intentions were noble.

Wailing
All your photos are great, Istanbul obviously just lends itself to all those small caught moments. Glad you both had wonderful haircuts! Didn't manage to get to Istanbul on this trip but after reading Orhan Pamuk it is definitely on the list for next time..

Put it on your list Meryl
This was our second time to Istanbul and it really grows on you. It's one of the world's great cities.

Too expensive in Mosman
All fine on the backing up images. How did Jake the Snake go in HSC, or shouldn't we ask about that.
10th December 2012

Hi Ben and poor pretty penny, was thinking is there anywheres you lot aint been, and then the other day while shooting a triathlon at Clifton gardens reserve in Mosman i thought to myself i bet they haven't been here. Keep well and hope you are backing up your images.

Fascinating...
What a great read, I loved this blog! You've certainly convinced me that this would be a great spot to visit....however won't be a for a while I don't think. I hope you keep travelling for a long, long time because I am really enjoying your insights. I always get a chuckle out of them too!
10th December 2012

Thanks again
We are getting a little world weary. I think we can smell home base but who knows.

Thanks for the glimpse...
As one of those "Satanic" Americans, it will probably be awhile before I get to Iran. Thanks for the photos and a glimpse of real life as opposed to what we see on TV.
10th December 2012

You would be welcome there
Americans are warmly welcomed in Iran but need to visit on a tour, no independence. I think Mr Ahmadinajah likes to keep an eye on you guys.
9th December 2012

Yep, Iran is an eye-opener to many
I think there are very few people who visit Iran that leave without loving it and being amazed by its people and how different they are from what main stream media would like you to believe. Unfortunately all too often government and people get mixed up, as if one represents the other. Even in democracies governments don't necessarily always reflect the views and ways of the people they govern, and yet we persist on judging people by those who govern them. So, as far as I am concerned there can't be enough bloggers who visit the 'unloved' countries in this world and tell it how it really is. So, keep up the good work.

Thanks and....
Here here. Love your work.

Old Arabia
If you want to see what Dubai might have looked like without the oil, you could venture a couple of hours north to Umm-al-Quwain, the only emirate in the UAE with no oil reserves. In other words, no high-rise, no fancy parks, no marinas, not much of anything really. But mightily interesting nevertheless.
10th December 2012

Agreed
We took a bus from Dubai to Muscat and the contrast of the countryside out of Dubai is an eye opener.

more pictures would be really grate . merci

Is that Jules from the Middle East 5 years back? If so, what's happening and where are you?
8th December 2012

Still loving the blog guys and it's always an entertaining read and your photos are terrific (yes, even the dead sheep!). Can't wait to hear about where you both end up next! Also... looks like you've got a bit of well-deserved fan mail these days. :-)

Nice entry Mr Hemmingway
I must admit Gaz, I have quite enjoyed living vicariously through your travel blogs and have come to the conclusion that you should write for a living as your writing is a class act. I tips me hat to you guvner
8th December 2012

Thanks Scotty.
I didn't know I had a fan base. How's retirement by the way? Keep my seat warm at SURFA.

I'm your 6th reader...
Rick Steves is an American travel show host who until recently only did programs on Europe. However, as an exception to the rule, he recently did a program on Iran. His description of the country and people was just what you found...a really safe and fascinating country and very hospitable people. I'm currently planning a trip along the Silk Road and am debating whether to enter Iran or not. They probably don't even give visas to Americans so I may not have the choice. Will you be continuing along the Silk Road to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyistan, and Kazakhstan and then China? I hope so for the sake of my research!
7th December 2012

No Silk Rd Unfortunately.
The Silk Rd is out of plans at the moment. We are now in Dubai and heading to Oman tomorrow before the Sri Lanka and India. As for visas, yes, Americans can obtain an Iranian visa but you need to be in a tour group. Mr Ahmadinejad likes to keep his eyes on you guys. Best of luck.
