Woke up to even more rain! Diane decided to catch up on her washing and went to the sister hotel to use the laundrette We then went into town to get a late breakfast and have another look around. We ate breakfast at the Coffee Grind on the main street. Just as we left the cafe the rain came on even heavier, we had to shelter for some time before we could move on. We did a bit of shopping and I investigated the location of a restaurant that I am thinking of visiting for dinner this evening. We then went back to the hotel and waited for a break in the weather, that never really came. I was told that our trip to the Kuranda Scenic Railway will not happen on Sunday due to the ... read more

It is still raining!. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant (with part of the floor flooded!) and decide to take a walk into town, just a few minutes from the hotel. We walked down the main street, it becomes obvious that we are visiting Port Douglas out of season. We go to look at the beach (Four mile beach). The seawater is a brown colour not the blue that we been used to, and there is a lot of vegetation flotsam and jetsam on the beach. We are not sure if this is the result of the recent cyclone. There is a notice warning of stingers, jellyfish and crocodiles that makes a visit to the beach far from inviting!. It is still raining! We returned to the hotel and ate lunch there. The hotel does not have ... read more

Bit of a wasted day today!. As we had to checkout of the hotel at 10:00, but were not being picked up until 15:15. So not really a lot of time to do too much in Alice Springs. After two days of getting up at 04:00, it was time for a long lie-in. We didn't get up until around 08:00. After yet again sorting out our suitcase we went for a late breakfast in the hotel. When we had finished breakfast, we went to find out check-out time, it was at this stage we found out it was 10:00. As it was already 10:00, we managed to negotiate an extra hour, any more than that and they wanted another A$60 - not very accommodating. We went back to our room and quickly packed, checked out and ... read more

Today is earmarked for visiting the Kings Canyon There are two options: • A walk around the rim of the canyon which is around 6km and takes 3 hours (which is a long time to walk 3kms – but it is at a leisurely pace with numerous stops do describe the rock formation and the fauna & flora of the region. There is an initial steep pull up onto the rim, but a walk along good paths around the rim Breakfast: 04:45 Continental Breakfast • The second walk is less strenuous, and is along the shaded canyon floor giving good views of the cliffs Breakfast: 06:30 Full Cooked Breakfast I decided to go for the Rim walk, and Di decided to go for the Canyon Floor walk, so she got a lie-in. I crawled out of ... read more

Up REALLY early this morning. The coach is picking us up at 05:00 am, so we need to be up at 4.00 am!!! Seems like we have only just gone to bed. First stop is a vantage point where we can photograph Ayers Rock as the rising suns rays hit the rock. (This is the theory!). We get off the coach and the guide sets up a table where we can get coffee and tea and some snacks, we grabbed a cup of tea/coffee then went up to the supposed vantage point to await the sun coming up at 06:27 am. There are two problems: 1) There are about 20 coaches here so to get a shot of the Rock without a head in your shot was only possible if half the photograph was half sky ... read more

Up early and packing again. Limo picked us up at 08:15 and whisked us to Sydney Airport (Well sort off, we got a bit caught up in the rush hour traffic!). The car was another Audi Quattro limo, this time with complimentary morning papers and a bottle of water each. Impression of Sydney: Hotel was brilliant; it was a really vibrant city with lots to do. The main focus is the Harbour area, and being as we were right on the doorstep, it made the stay even more enjoyable. Like most major cities, it is great to visit – but we wouldn’t want to live there! My daughter Nat had warned me that Sydney Airport could be a bugger, with extremely long queues for check-in. They had obviously done quite a few modifications since she was ... read more

Up early at around 7.00 am the day of the Bridge Climb, and I am like a "coiled spring" raring to go. We touch base with our friends in Aberdeen via Skype. At around 07:30 I set off for the bridge climb and arranged to meet Di at the swimming pool at around 11:00am. I arrived early at the Bridge Climb office, and have some time to kill. My climb will be the first of the day and I am on the "Express climb" which just goes for it without too many stops. Very soon we are called through, first we sign the disclaimer and are breathalised. Next we move to another room where we collect our trendy jumpsuits and introduce ourselves to our fellow climbers (On my climb there were two Americans, Two Bermudans, two ... read more

The plan for today is to visit a district of Sydney called "The Rocks" where there is a market at the week-end. The Rocks is an old district of Sydney that used to be "a bit rough"(drunks, ladies of the night and slums), now it is regarded as quaint and trendy. There are some real good "pubs" in the Rocks.(Although we have not had chance to try them yet - maybe tomorrow) We enjoyed the walk around the market the items on sale tended to be good quality, some of the markets that we have so far have tended to be a bit tacky and many stalls selling essentially the same thing. We then had a walk near the Bridge and around the Hyatt which is the most exclusive hotel in Sydney with the penthouse costing ... read more

First full day in Sydney - We decided to take the Sydney Explorer, which is a double decker open topped bus. The bus is hop-on/hop-off and with its 25 stops takes you all round the city visiting all the major sites. This was a good decision as we saw all of the city without too much walking being involved. Sydney is by far the biggest city that we have visited, so exploring it all on foot was not really a possibility We got off the bus at Darling harbour to visit the Sydney Aquarium, this was quite enjoyable and a lot less crowded than the one that we had previously visited in Singapore. We were also able to buy Aquarium tickets on the bus which meant that we were able to skip the queue. By the ... read more

On the move again We were picked up by the limo at 09:45 and taken to Adelaide Airport. (We could get used to travelling in big black limousines with a driver in uniform!) Check in went no problem, but Di is not happy as we are flying economy and we can't get in the lounge. There were only two lounges at the airport both affiliated to specific airlines. So we had to pay for our refreshments at the airport - bugger! Thoughts of Adelaide – It seems older and more established than Perth. It appears generally quieter as regards people on the street, although Rundle Street can be busy in the evening. The airport at Adelaide seems new, and it is spacious, far from the packed Heathrow that we left an age ago. Another observation on Australia ... read more
