Friday we were due to dock back at Singapore. So a lot of the time was spent with the formalities, settling the bill, getting back passports etc. Having packed there was some time for some sunbathing and a last lunch and wine on the ship. The food on the ship has been excellent and we are reluctant to leave the cruise behind. We docked at around 14:00 and meet our driver who is waiting for us; he whisks us to the Park Hotel at Clarkes Quay to check in once again. We had a dinner appointment with two old Singaporean business colleagues. We went to a seafood restaurant. My Singaporean friend ordered and we ended up with masses of food, the centre piece of which was the Chili Crab. The evening was excellent Diane and I ... read more

Thursday we were supposed to stop briefly in Malacca, if it happened it must have been while we were asleep! We had booked places on a tour called “The Asian Melting Pot” which was essential a photo-stop tour at all the tourist attractions. Firstly a photo opportunity for the Shan Alam or “Blue Mosque” Then along to Independence Square for a photo shoot of all the surrounding buildings. We then had the opportunity to go up the 421-metre KL Tower. It takes approximately 1 minute from the ground to reach the observation floor. Some great sots of the surrounding city were to be had. And lastly to the Suria KLCC, which is a premier shopping mall, nestling between the Petronas Twin Towers. Sad to say that our only purchases were from the Marks & Spencer shop. ... read more

Wednesday was essentially spent sailing. An opportunity to do some sun bathing we docked at Singapore to pick –up passengers who would be joining the Cruise to Kuala Lumpur and on. Most people disembark, so the restaurants at dinner were deserted. Also there were Champagne parties prior to dinner to keep us happy. The Champagne was flowing like it was going out of style... read more

Tuesday was an early start; we were due to disembark at around 07:45. So it was an early breakfast was called for. After breakfast we were at the front of the ship watching the ship come into Phuket harbor. The ship came to a halt and a boat approached that we assumed to be a pilot, and expected the boat to start moving again - it didn’t. We stood their waiting not realizing that the boats that we were seeing were vessels shuttling passengers to the shore for the tours. By the time we realized what was going on we were way late for our tour. We boarded a tender vessel and reach the shore as soon as possible. We hit the beach and were told to run to the end of the beach, we ran ... read more

Ship docked in Penang. We went on shore on a tour. Getting off the boat is like a military operation with something like 2,500 people trying to find their way Firstly we went to the Khoo Kongsi Temple. This is the one of the most celebrated can temple in Penang. Khoo is the name of the Chinese family that set up the temple. The word “Kongsi” means partnership or guild, I guess that it is like the Chinese version of the masons?. The building was built in 1906 and is very ornate. Members of the Khoo family who have “done good” have plaques erected inside, some were lawyers in London. It’s other claim to fame is that it was used in the film “Anna and the King” starring Jodie Foster and the Hong Kong actor Chow ... read more

I had quite a good nights sleep, but my wife Diane could not get to sleep and was caught up in the "jet lag" trap. We decided to go for an early breakfast and was down in the hotel restaraunt by 7am, after a healthy continental breakfast ( apart from Diane' "Jam Butty"), we were waiting for the rain to relent so we could explore and get our bearings. Around 8.00 it look like it was starting to clear up, so we ventured out to have a look around Clarkes Quay. The idea was to look for places to dine etc for when we returned for a couple of days after the cruise. We manged to walk around for about half an hour before the rain started again, and we had to huury back to the hotel. ... read more

Arrived in Singapore around 6pm local time on Saturday 29th January. It was raining. We were to be picked by a driver to be taken to our hotel. When we exited the customs, we could not see our name on any of the boards being held by the drivers, and we were reminded of a recent vacation in the Algarve where our driver failed to show up. But our fears were unfounded as he was just a little late. We were staying at the Park Hotel in Clarkes Quay, our driver told us this was a "lively area". But unfortunately we could not do too much exploring due to the incessant rain. We found a outdoor cafe with shelter next to the hotel, the place was called "The Sailor". After a Pizza and a couple of ... read more

Asia January 28th 2011

Started of on Friday 28th January, leaving Aberdeen Scotland just as the first flurries of further snow falls were starting, my wife Diane and I were looking forward to getting to warmer climes for a spell. We commissioned our son Craig to get us over to the airport, and everything went smoothly through check-in.We sat in the BA lounge, people watching and feeling relaxed anticipating the couple of months travel that we had ahead of us. The first lap was to fly to Heathrow Airport, London to pick up our Singapore flight. Everthing went smoothly on the flight to London. We had about seven hours to kill before our flight to Singapore. Because we were travelling business class, we could get entry to the Executive Lounge. We made full use of this availing ourselves of the ... read more
