We are up at 05:30; we make a cup of tea/coffee before going to wait for the bus, which will pick us up at 06:30. It feels really cold today; I do not wear shorts for the first time in two months, but go for the long trousers. We also have on sweaters and take our waterproofs with us. Di does not really warm up until around lunchtime The bus turns up on time and makes some more pick-ups in Queenstown. We then set off, as it is dark and not much to see, we catch up on a bit of sleep. We drive for two hours to get to Te Anau, where we stop for 30 mins for breakfast and pick up another couple of passengers. It will be another two hours to reach Milford ... read more

Not doing much today – “day of rest”. It is overcast Di gets up at around 08:00, and I get my lie-in for about an hour, but Di is not the quietest of people in the morning, going in and out of the van, making a noisy breakfast – although I’m sure she wasn’t doing it on purpose!! I eventually get showered after breakfast and I catch up with my Blog, while Di goes to the supermarket. It starts to rain and goes on into the afternoon. We had intended to go into Queenstown in the afternoon, but do not fancy getting soaked and wait around for the rain to stop. Every time it starts to brighten up and we are getting ready to go out it starts to rain again! At around 16:00 the rain ... read more

I heard rain pattering on the campervan last night. That’s the first time I have heard the rain since we have been in the camper We oversleep as the alarm is only set for weekdays. It is still raining quite heavily in the morning. We have a quick breakfast and set off, it is misty and we cannot see the mountaintops. It is good that we got in the helicopter flight across the glaciers yesterday, as it would be impossible today. Possums –Throughout the drive in New Zealand you can’t help but notice the amount of apparently dead Possums at the side of the road. You would think that with this fatality rate they would be an endangered species, but apparently not (there are still around 70 million of them!!). I can only think that the ... read more

Set off at around 09:00, I was busy catching up with my Blog .The previous evening I had difficulties downloading my photographs. Despite all the forecasts it is a blue sky and the sun is shining although a little chilly in the morning. It is a straight run along the coastal road highway 6 to Franz Josef of about 177 km and should take us around 3 hours. We have just had a cup of coffee/tea before setting off, so it is not long before we start to feel hungry. We pull in at a small ex-Mining Town called Ross. Its claim to fame is that the largest gold nugget in NZ was found there, named the “Honorable Roddy”. The restaurant where we had breakfast was called Roddy Nugget Café and Bar. We get a huge ... read more

We are on the road early again, away by 08:00 We are initially on a secondary road that is a bit winding. As we get through Waiau we pick-up the highway 7 that will take us through the Lewis Pass. We pass mountains shrouded in clouds. Although there are some winding mountain roads, a good deal of the roads is straight, and passes through the forest. It is a lot less daunting than I had imagined. At one point we were held up by hundreds of sheep that were being herded down the main road. The roads a very quiet and we see very little traffic. We stopped for lunch at Springs Junction, which is about halfway across the island. We are both starving as we set off without breakfast. We arrive at the campsite in ... read more

Early start, we shower and just have time for a cup of coffee - long way to go today. Di is not happy the weather forecast for Kaikoura is rain! But for Motueka (where we are) it is sunshine!! We set off, heading back towards Nelson. The tide is out when we get there so it does not look half as impressive as when we previously passed through. We head back to Havelock, but not the Queen Charlotte Drive that we passed through from Picton, which was the long and winding road. Queen Charlotte Drive sounds such an innocuous name, but it is a bastard of a road. We turn south and headed for Blenheim, as we approach Blenheim there are row and rows of vines. And some of the bigger vineyards are here, including Cloudy ... read more

Up early, It is a bit overcast and chilly early in the morning. We have breakfast and go to meet the bus that is picking us up at reception to take us to the boat. We board the boat at Kaiteriteri beach. The boat is essentially a water taxi that drops and picks-up people who are walking different sections of the coastal in the Abel Tasman National Park. The boat has an extending gangplank on the front that allows them walk onto the beach to start their walks. Di and I are not walking but simply riding the boat from Kaiteriteri to Totaruni and back calling at about ha/lf a dozen beaches along the way. The trip takes about 3 hours. We sit on the top to take photos, but it is a bit windy and ... read more

Up at 06:00, quick shower, cuppa and were off! We use the GPS to find the ferry terminal, as we don’t want any mix-ups. Being early we miss the worst of the Wellington morning traffic, although it is starting to build up and you can see that it will be gridlock a little later. We find the ferry terminal and check-in and board immediately – all quite painless. We make a beeline for the café on the ferry for a full cooked breakfast before the masses arrive. We eat breakfast and Di makes the comment that she hopes that is the last time she sees it as I have read in the Lonely Planet that the Wellington to Picton ferry crossing can some times be a little choppy!!. We sit and read the morning newspaper for ... read more

Up at 07:00 again. But we are showered and have breakfast and are away for just after 08:00, which is a record! With it being Sunday the roads are relatively quite so we make good progress as the roads are relatively quiet. We head down highway 2 through Hastings. We pass through Dannevirke that appears to have a strong Scandinavian influence. We have been going for a couple of hours when we come to a small town called Woodvile where we decided to stop. Elevenses! Slice time! Today it is vanilla slice and Latte. Diane is also starting to join the “Elevenses Club” and has a cream cake. We push on and see some Hills/Mountains coming up and I think we will be into the steep winding roads again, But no; there is an impressive gorge ... read more

Nice day today so we will stay in Napier for another day. Di is up early pottering about; I take the opportunity for a lie-in. Di has made breakfast, so we eat and I go to shower rather late at around 10:00. I then fill up the water in the motorhome and do the “slopping out” so we will be in good shape to set off early on Sunday. We then head off into Napier to fuel up again so we do not have to do this on Sunday at our early start. We park-up on the sea front and walk into town. The town had been quiet on Friday, but today there is a real sense of Saturday morning. (Being away for 2 months – tends to make all the days merge, so you are ... read more
