We are up at around 07:30.We decided to have breakfast in our room as it had a small kitchen, we had been to a supermarket across the road from the hotel which is the most overstocked supermarket I have ever seen! We have Toast, Fruit, Coffee /Tea and are ready to go. We plan out the day, I have had a minor disaster with the formatting of the memory card in camera, which means that I have lost my photographs. So we decide to repeat the boat trip on the Hudson, so that I can retake the photos of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. We have also have an helicopter ride booked for 14:15 and we also want to visit the Natural History Museum – quite a packed day! We take the Metro ... read more

We arose about 07: 30. The tour of New York City was due to start at 09:00. We went to a small restaurant next door to the hotel for breakfast. The coach tour took us on a tour of city making stops to look at ground zero and the Chelsea Market. The coach then took us to the pier to catch a boat tour up the Hudson River taking in the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline and other points of interest. We then got the coach back to the Beacon Hotel, but we got off at Times Square to make our own way back after walking for a while decided to take a cab as we were beginning to get a little weary. We book dinner at David Burkes Townhouse on our daughter’s recommendation. ... read more

Early start, we have a 09:30 flight, but we want to be at the airport for 06:30. We get the airport bus to terminal 3 at Heathrow ( after an initial hiccup when I think that we are going to terminal 4, which is actually our arrival terminal at JFK!!) Anyhow we arrive at terminal 3 at around 06:30. The Virgin check -in area is fairly quiet and we check in with no problem and get fast tracked to the Virgin Lounge. The Virgin Lounge is really neat with a restaraunt, waiter service and even a pool table. It is the first lounge that I have been in that has piped music which is really good stuff like Simply Red etc. We eat breakfast and have a few bucks fizz. Di goes for a facial which ... read more

Graeme gave us a lift to Aberdeen Airport. Our flight to the US is not until Saturday 5th May, but because it leaves London at 09:30, we have decided to travel the day before and we are staying at the Sheraton Skyline. We check -in and then go out to find somwhere to eat. We found a local pub called "The Pheasant". The food is really good with enormous potions. Once we have finished lounge we feel absolutelt stuffed, so much so that we go back to the hotel and rest for the rest of the day!! We were going to go to the hotel bar in the evening - but we do not make it and have an early night as we have an early start in the morning... read more

Di’s Birthday and also Mothers Day and no one around to celebrate, we will catch-up on the celebrations when we are back in Aberdeen. Today we begin the long journey home to Aberdeen. We should arrive back in Aberdeen at 10:30 Monday 4th April (all being well!) Breakfast was at 09:00, so we are up at around 07:30 to do some final packing. The clocks went back last night so we got an extra hour in bed. We have breakfast with Ian and Janet. Then we kill time until the car picks us up at 11:00. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the airport and check-in is straightforward. We then went to the Qantas lounge as we are in good time for the flight that departs at 13:25. Firstly we fly from Christchurch to ... read more

Another cold morning, although the day shapes up up to be a fine sunny day, if a little windy We have coffee/tea for breakfast as the fridge has been emptied in preparation for returning the motor van. I also have to drain all the waste water and empty the loo cartridge for the last time (one of the least favourite jobs!). We pack our bags trying to remember all the bits and pieces that we have secreted about the van. We feel a little sad leaving our home for the last three weeks. Both of us have enjoyed our first camper vanning experience. It is certainly the best way to see New Zealand, and I think that we both would like to think that we would camper van again at some point in the future. We ... read more

Away late today, the last full day in the camper van. It is an overcast day and we have showers on the way down to Christchurch. We have decided to stay in Christchurch on Friday evening so we wont have too much time travelling when we return the camper van on Saturday. We check in at the “top ten” site just north of the city. As we check-in, there are not just holidaymakers on the site, but some of the workers that are helping with the Earthquake work in the city centre. The workers come back in the evenings looking exhausted and the first thing after a shower is a beer - must be a hell of a job. There are warnings at the site to boil water before drinking and to use water sparingly. Also ... read more

We got away from Dunedin by 09:00 driving up highway 1 to Timaru. And arrived at the “top-ten” site in Timaru at about 13:30. We had a walk to the beach and walked on further into the town centre. We stop for a drink overlooking the beach, and then walked back to the Camper Site. We sat outside the van and read, it was a beautiful sunny day, the weather forecast said 24 degrees and it must have been about that. We ate at the motor van, I cooked a mushroom omelette Not much else to report for today. All the exciting and interesting excursion have come to an end. thoughts are turning to the journey home. ... read more

It was bloody freezing last night. I got up in the middle of the night to put an extra blanket on the beds. I even put the fan heater on for a while!. It was a slow start to the day. We got the 11:00 bus into Dunedin. Dunedin Is the old Gaelic name for Edinburgh. There is a lot of Scottish influence on the city. The municipal building; Town Hall, Station etc. are all built in a Scottish style. We went to the visitors information centre to book a tour to the Otago Peninsula. Ended up booking a wildlife cruise that leaves at 15:00. So wee have some time to kill. I go for a haircut that passes all of 30 seconds. We go and get some lunch. It is a lovely day and we ... read more

We set off at about 09:00 to drive to Dunedin We retrace the drive to Queenstown as far back as Cromwell. On the way we pass a fast flowing stream called “Roaring Meg” and we have a photo-stop. We then pick up highway 8 to drive southeast towards Dunedin. When we set off it was good weather in Queenstown and the forecast for Dunedin was showers in the morning with sunshine in the afternoon. But as we approach Dunedin it is still overcast with showers. We checked into the site at around 13:30. We took it easy most of the afternoon, and caught the bus into Dunedin at around 18:00 and spent an hour having a quick look round. Came back to the campervan and had a meal. Nothing much more to say for today. Tomorrow ... read more
