Lao - April 28th - May 8th, 2010 After a brief flight from Kathmandu, we arrived in Bangkok in the early afternoon. Due to all the political protests that were going on in the center of the city, we though it best to explore the city at a later time, hopefully once thing have calmed down a bit. From the airport we went straight to the train station and booked a night train to Nong Khai, on the Thai-Lao border. After some of the night trains in India, the Thai train was pure luxury. We had clean sheets and the train was actually cleaned from the last people before we got on. We had not seen anyone clean anything in over two months, so it was pretty nice. We crossed the Lao border and were right ... read more

Nepal - April 3rd - 26th 2010 Arriving in Kathmandu we were thrilled to be setting off on our most exciting mission to date. Dan has wanted to see Mount Everest for a long time, so we embarked on the two week trek to Base Camp. Unfortunately, we really had no idea what we were getting into. After surviving India we thought it would be a good idea to recuperate in Kathmandu and give our Delhi Bellies some time to settle. After making all necessary preparations, booking flights and renting clothes and equipment we were ready to go. Regrettably, our first day turned into a harder challenge then either of us anticipated. The night before our flight we both ate a sandwich that made us quite ill making it next to impossible to keep any food ... read more

India - March 2 - April 2, 2010 We had heard before coming to India that we will either love it or hate it. For the both of us it was somewhere in between. We arrived in Mumbai late in the evening and had to settle for an expensive but not very nice hotel near the airport. The next day we bought the Lonley Planet India guide, orientated ourselves and went to the cheap hotels of the Colaba tourist district. We spent 2 days exploring the city, and true to what they say, this is a diverse city with vast contrasts. On one side, you have sprawling suburbs with luxurious high rise condos, while on the other, immense poverty and massive slums. What makes it different from other cities is how closely together the two are. ... read more

Nairobi, Kenya - March 17 - 26, 2010 When we left Dahab we knew we had a long travel day ahead of us in order to get to Nairobi for my best friends wedding, but we had no idea what fate had in store for us. When we arrived in Cairo after a 9 hour bus ride from Dahab, we found out that our flight was delayed. This also meant we would miss our connecting flight in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We were assured by the Egyptian airport authorities that arrangements are being made to get us on another flight the same day. After 24 hours on the road we arrived in Addis Ababa only to discover that there were no more flights to Nairobi that day. Luckily Ethiopian Airlines took care of everything and provided ... read more

Dubai & Sharjah - Feb.27 - March 2, 2010 After spending 3 days in a small hotel in downtown Nairobi waiting for our Indian visas (and having to pay a bribe of over $70 CAD) we were finally leaving Africa. It was cheaper for us to fly to the Emirates rather than going direct to Mumbai, so next thing we know we were on our way back to the Middle East, Sharjah to be exact. Dubai was definitely on our list of places to see on this trip, so we were glad we could go see it. We stayed in Sharjah, the next Emirate over simply because it was much cheaper then Dubai. We did however spend two out of three days exploring Dubai, which was sort of anti-climactic for us. We had seen this place ... read more

Dahab, Sinai, Egypt - Dec. 8, 2009 - Feb. 13, 2010 When we started our journey we had never even heard of a tiny place called Dahab in the Sinai peninsula. During our travels in Jordan we met many travelers that told us that under no circumstances should we miss the Sinai in Egypt. Our original plan was to take the ferry from Aquaba, Jordan and head directly to Cairo. As usual our plans changed at the last minute and we decided to go to Newieba instead of Cairo. As soon as we got off the ferry we realized Egypt would be unique. This was evident by the chaos that ensued at the Newieba port. Luggage and shipments were haphazardly discarded for sorting on the shipping docks and people were transported like cattle from the ferry ... read more

Cairo: Jan. 2 - 11 After spending almost three weeks in the Sinai we succumbed to the fact that we would eventually have to leave. Despite the many warnings from locals, divers and tourists alike, we headed to one of the world's largest cities, Cairo. As soon as we got off the bus in Cairo it was clear we were no longer in the peaceful haven of the Sinai. In a high paced city with a population of 20 million, the honking, yelling and arguing was almost immediate. Luckily, Dan's friend Mohamed, from Toronto was working in Cairo and was able to pick us up from the bus station. He was a wonderful host for our entire stay, and truly saved us from the real Cairo experience. Mohamed was kind enough to find us a beautiful ... read more

December 14th 2009

Jordan, Nov. 21st - Dec.8th, 2009 Our only option for a direct ride from Beirut to Amman, Jordan was with a local taxi service. Early in the morning we piled in the car with two Jordanian men, a chain smoking driver and a trunk full of pita bread. Six hours, 2 boarder crossings, and 3 packs of cigarettes later we arrived in Amman. As soon as we crossed the border we were pleasantly surprised at how modern Jordan is. It is definitely one of the more developed Middle Eastern countries we have seen to date. Amman is very similar to middle eastern cities we have encountered before; countless markets, roasting chickens, hanging lamb heads, the constant noise and of course the warm hearted welcoming people. The capital city of Jordan does not have much to offer ... read more

Occupied Palestine - Nov. 25th - 29th, 2009 This blog entry is to show people some of our experiences while we visited the Holy Land in occupied Palestine. In our 7 months of travel, not a single place has been as disturbing as Jerusalem and the West Bank. 60+ years of Zionist occupation has turned this place into a apartheid state with different laws for Muslims and Jews, with the Muslims always getting the short end of the stick. Every effort is made to make this place look as normal as possible for visiting tourists, but looking past the propaganda, just under the surface, you can see the paranoid heavy security and the tension that exists to this day between the two peoples. Below are a few pictures that reflect the brutal Israeli policy towards the ... read more

Jordan & Jerusalem Nov. 24 - 30, 2009 After spending a few days in the city of Amman, we hired a cab for the day and took a drive that would begin our journey through the the Holy Land, the places that we had heard about in the bible since childhood. Just outside of Amman lies Mt. Nebo, our first stop. This is the place where Moses is said to have climbed and taken his last breath. He is thought to be buried on the hill, but his body has never been found. From the top of this small peak, you can see the Dead Sea, the town of Jericho in Palestine and on a clear day as far as Jerusalem. You can also see our next stop, the Jordan River, which is where Jesus was ... read more
