What we most appreciate about living in Ubud is best summarized in all the little things we experience daily. The early morning rooster wake up calls, followed by the daily sing song “Selamat Pagi / Good Morning“ greeting of the hotel staff as they arrive with our hot water thermos. Early morning laps in the pool. Morning yoga practice overlooking the rice paddies and coconut palm trees. Laughter over breakfast with hotel staff and guests. Jumping on the motorbike and going, well, anywhere, because the freedom of the ride is always more important than the destination. The not infrequent complete halting of traffic on a main street for five or ten minutes to allow for a ceremonial procession of Balinese fully dressed in ceremonial garb, women bearing fruit baskets on their heads, men marching along playing ... read more

After spending approximately three and a half decades teaching in a variety of Canadian classrooms, I officially left the profession five years ago. At that time, I recall saying in my farewell speech that I was not leaving teaching: just expanding the walls of the classroom. I knew I would soon be shaping a lifestyle built around extensive global travel, accompanied by extensive learning. So here we are, five years later. Since that time I have co-produced and released Standing on a Platform of Kindness, my second commercial album as a singer-songwriter, and continue to pursue self-directed study of the elusive world of music theory. I have taken up the sport of scuba diving and will soon be completing my 65th dive as a Certified Advanced Underwater Adventurer. I have spent twenty weeks immersed in the ... read more

It‘s Not Always Easy Getting To Where You’re Going . . . I have alluded to the fact that travel is a commitment fueled by passion: by a desire to experience; to discover; to learn; to grow. I have also mentioned several times in various blog entries that travel is not always easy, as evidenced again by our recent excursion to Labuan Bajo, on the Indonesian island province of Flores. Our journey begins at 7 a.m. on the island of Gili Trawangan, Lombok. Our scheduled itinerary will have us being transported by water taxi for fifteen minutes to mainland Lombok, where we will pick up another taxi that will deliver us to the airport in Mataram an hour and a half later. From there, we will fly to Denpasar, Bali, where we will pick up another ... read more

February 13th: An Amazing Day of Diverse Experiences in Three Parts Every year for the past six years, since we first discovered this island paradise off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia, we make a point of returning. In our extensive travels throughout Asia since 2006, we have visited many beautiful countries and places, but some take a piece of our heart and keep it in safe keeping until we return. Gilli Trawangan is one of those. It was the first island we visited in Indonesia in 2013, and the first time we encountered pony driven carts - the primary mode of transport for everything -as there are no motorized vehicles on the island. It is where we first swam with turtles, then a year later took our Open Water Diving course, and met our very dear ... read more

It was Stan’s birthday yesterday, February 8th. He is seventy one years young. He has just completed a month long 150 hour intensive yoga course, and is about to do another scuba refresher course to prepare for the somewhat challenging dive excursions we are undertaking next week in Komodo Marine Park in Flores, Indonesia. He is seventy one years young. I am very proud of him. I am fortunate to have been able to share his birthdays with him since he was twenty six years old, and excited to continue our lifelong adventures together. His birthday tributes began on February 7th, one day early. We were still in Kuta, Bali, enjoying a sunset dinner overlooking the beach with his sister Annie, who had just completed a forty hour global trek across the planet, to celebrate the ... read more

It was a forty hour journey to get from our home in Regina, central Canada, to our first overseas destination in Bangkok, Thailand. The first fifteen hours involved a two hour flight to Vancouver airport on New Year’s Day, followed by a dozen hours waiting for our after midnight flight to Bangkok, via Taipei. All connections went well, but the additional twelve hours of waiting around the airport was a gruelling time extension to an already long flight plan. However, when we finally arrived Bangkok mid-afternoon two days later it was only a matter of minutes before we fell asleep and remained in that state for the next eighteen hours, ready to commence a new day in a new country relatively fresh and revived. Jet lag was not noticeable. It is always a delight to start ... read more

We have been here before, at this particular Castle Mountain overflow campsite, many times. It is our favourite hangout destination in the Rockies, although we have certainly ventured to other areas in Alberta and British Columbia over the decades. We have travelled to the mountains before children, with children, and now return, full circle, just the two of us again. We have cycled through the mountains, climbing the daunting Roger's Pass not once, but twice. We have motorbiked from Saskatchewan through the Rockies to the west coast; we have hiked Banff’s Sulphur Mountain at least a dozen times, as well as taken on the far more ominous challenge of hiking Castle Mountain. We have canoed the mountain lakes and attempted to kayak the swift flowing streams :) We have not been short on adventures. But the ... read more

It is always strange to leave one side of the planet, in the southern hemisphere, on a particular date, travel for eighteen hours, and arrive on the other side on the planet, in the northern hemisphere, relatively early in the day on the same date that we departed. It is also still a little shocking every year to adjust to the cooler climate upon arrival. And it is always a delight to rediscover that daylight hours here don't end at 6:30 p.m., but go on long into the evening, delivering the dramatic beautiful prairie sunsets for which my home province, Saskatchewan, whose vehicle license plate reads "Land of the Living Skies", is renowned. All things come and go, and the Dreamchasers adventures are no exception. Another season of global travel is over. After a few days ... read more

Given that our flight back from Denpasar Bali to Canada typically involves around thirty hours of being in transit, we have begun the practice of breaking up the long haul flight with a stopover en route home, generally determined by where the overseas carrier stops. When flying with Cathay Pacific Airlines, we took the opportunity one year to explore Hong Kong for a couple of days. Very worthwhile - both for breaking up the flight and lessening the effects of jet lag - but also because it enabled us to experience the culture of another international cosmopolitan city. This year we flew EVA Airlines, based out of Taipei, Taiwan, and finally got to visit this interesting city. Unfortunately Stan picked up a bit of sinus congestion from the five hour flight to Taipei from Denpasar, so ... read more

As a final assignment for this year's Bahasa Language study, my teacher asked me to write a composition which applied all of the concepts we have studied to date.. After pondering what meaningful subject I might write about, I decided to complete my latest travel blog "The Inexplicable Magic of Being Here" in two languages - English and Bahasa Indonesia, as this topic is very close to my heart. It was challenging, but I like challenges, and I learned a great deal in the process. Here, for my Bahasa Indonesia speaking friends, is the Bahasa Indonesia version of my previous travel blog entry "The Inexplicable Magic of Being Here". As well, this post will be a good refresher assignment for me when I return to my Bahasa language study next February, after an eight month absence, ... read more
