Here we are, back on Gilli T after having tons of fun biking around the mellow and stunningly gorgeous beautiful shoreline of Kuta Lombok, fulfilling serious missions like where to find good surf and good restaurants. And of course, both of us getting a brief intro to the sport of surfing, for the first time ever, and also experiencing our first ever tropical storm on Gilli Air. When Stan and I were on Gilli T earlier this month, our focus was entirely to get our Open Water Dive Certification, which we did. The intent for our return trip was to start logging dives, and get more comfortable with the sport. We were also excited because we would now be doing family dives, as our son Tanner and his partner Annie are both certified divers, and quite ... read more

This was our second trip to Gilli Air, but only the first for our son Tanner and his partner Annie, and our arrival was, to say the least, dramatic. We chartered a small boat for just the four of us to make the ten minute journey from the Lombok mainland to the nearest of the three Gilli Islands, Gilli Air. We did notice that the waves were getting pretty intense by the time we completed the short distance, but we managed to dock quickly and safely with all our stuff. However, about ten minutes later, when we were still trekking around looking for accommodation, the winds began to howl, waves became huge and threatening, and we were often pelted by sand as we did the walkabout. This continued for about forty five minutes, during which several ... read more

This was our predetermined destination at which to hook up with our surfer son Tanner and his partner Annie, who were arriving from Canada to spend some time in the Indonesian sun. Being the amazing parents we are, we took it upon ourselves to do some research last year in our travels, looking specifically for the best surfing waves in a laid back setting, and voila! Here we are again in beautiful Kuta Lombok, with amazing beaches and surf that extend for miles in a still undeveloped landscape which also offers stunning higher elevation rides into a countryside rich with lush green rice paddies. It was a tough job, but we took it on, and delightfully, one year later, here we are again to share it with Tanner and Annie. This was the place I cut ... read more

Although we had both taken the PADI Open Water Diving Course almost two decades ago at home in landlocked central Canada, back then we did not have the travel opportunities necessary to apply those skills, and they were subsequently abandoned. The idea to retake the course came to us last year, as we now seem to be often travelling to areas that feature world class dive sites. So we did our research just before leaving the Gilli Islands, and returned to take the course from Diversia - the same scuba dive company that had interested us in 2014. The course is offered over a three or four day period, and we chose to take it over four days, given that we were not time pressed, and we are both former teachers with a need to go ... read more

Banda Aceh, and the nearby coastal town of Muedula, were at the epicentre of the Tsunami that hit this part of the world on December 26, 2014, just over ten years ago. As such, we made a point of spending a half day touring a number of key areas in the city. In addition to the Tsunami Museum, we visited the fishing boat that had been launched on to the top of a house about 4 kilometres from the sea, where it subsequently served as a lifeboat saving fifty nine lives. We also visited the huge ocean freighter that was launched inland kilometres away from the ocean, testifying again to the strength of the tsunami. It was powerful and touching to be in the heart of the vibrant fishing village today, and realize that this same ... read more

This is our first trip to Pulau Weh Sabang Island, and we knew before coming that this was an exploratory visit to check it out for future possibilities, since it is renowned for its diving, just as Banda Aceh is for its world class surfing. Unfortunately, our schedule only allowed us to book two days here, but it only took us about two hours to begin planning for our return. The boat ride over was an adventure. It was a huge Vancouver Island sized ferry with three or four hundred locals - most tourists use the fast boat that is three times the price, or about $9 - and it was good to once again be in a population of almost entirely local people. Although no one spoke English, several people gave us the thumbs up ... read more

In case you don't already know her name, allow me to introduce you to my new travel guitar, Ramblin' Rose. Although I have taken her predecessor - a Martin Backpacker guitar - with me for the past two Dreamchasers adventures, this year I upgraded to an oh-so-beautiful, elegant, rich sounding Baby Martin, so this is really Ramblin Rose's first big trip. Of course I watch her like an overprotective mother, wrapping her carefully, always keeping her in sight, and never ever letting anyone else carry her around, etc. etc. You do remember that I mentioned recently about the roads of Sumatra being particularly rough? Well, I have been a little rough myself for the past month, fighting off first a sore back, followed by a head cold and then a bout of traveller's you-know-what, so I ... read more

Let's just start by saying we loved it here and could easily have stayed longer than the three nights we had. To say Lake Toba and Samsomir Island is beautiful is a vast understatement. I believe Lake Tabo is the largest lake created by a volcanic eruption way back when, and I believe too that it is incredibly deep - don't you just love the scientific accuracy - but someone told me so. What I do know for sure is that it is huge, clean, and warm, cause I tested it myself when I went for a swim, and it was about the same temperature as the swimming pool. Surrounded by lush green mountain ridges and coloured with the uniquely designed Batak houses, it has a very definite charm. But equally charming is the fact that ... read more

I believe our guide told us there are over one hundred and sixty volcanoes in Indonesia, several of which are found in Sumatra. According to Lonely Planet, the two most accessible in Sumatra - Sibayak and Sinabulu - found in Northern Sumatra, attract the majority of volcanoe seekers here. However, our guide informed us that hiking Sinabulu is not allowed, because the climb is very dangerous, and because of the possibility of the volcanoe erupting. I'm no expert, but when we passed by Sinabulu on a clear day, that steady flow of smoke clearing coming from the top of the mountain looked pretty ominous and live-volcano like to me. But I digress. We climbed Sibayak. For us, it wasn't so much about the climb - or we might have considered the full day hike. It was ... read more

After twelve hours in transit from Bangkok to Medan, Sumatra, we arrive in evening darkness into completely different energy than we left behind in the developed high rise beach resort that we had stayed at for two weeks. We are once again in the land of many many people, family excursions of four on one motorbike, buses choking fumes, truckloads of chickens, and cars all competing for road space on poorly maintained dusty roads, lined on each side by brightly lit food and merch stalls late into the night. For a moment it felt like being back in India or Sri Lanka again, which in itself was exciting, but then we turned off our very busy street and arrived at our destination, into an oasis of fairy lights and solitude, and in the morning woke up ... read more
