Soccer, Tango and Vibrant Street Culture On our first four days in Buenos Aires we laid pretty low. The twenty five hour flight left us jet lagged and in need of rest, as the pre trip preparations had us exhausted even before we departed. But on day five we began our explorations. And this city is so beautiful, the people so kind and accommodating, and the culture and history so rich, that we soon compiled a long list of things to do while here, and immediately started the process of checking the boxes. Our first venture out of the apartment and into the big city of two million plus was to La Boca, an area of the city known for its large and colorful murals, tango street culture, and most significantly, its being home to one ... read more

MISSING May 6th 2023

I had thought my travel writing was complete for this trip, but it seems my heart still lingers in Asia. Even though we recently completed the journey back to Regina, Canada, it still has more it wants to share. We discovered this twinkling electric fantasyland strolling around our neighbourhood on our last night in Bangkok earlier this week, before bracing ourselves for a wildly fun tuk-tuk ride to the King’s Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in all its golden sparkling glory. The evening before we had enjoyed a long and wonderful foot massage on the street, while listening to an incredibly talented musician next to us who absolutely nailed a number of Freddie Mercury tunes with his impressive vocal range and stellar guitar playing. Who takes on Freddie Mercury? Who takes on Queen ... read more

We have travelled 38,253 km on this Dreamchasers adventure. That is only 1,822 km short of the distance it takes to circumnavigate the globe. Accordingly, we have spent a lot of time in the air, in airports, and in taxis of various forms. We have decided hands down that this Dreamchasers adventure has been one of the most rewarding we have experienced in years. This in spite of the many more travellers we encountered everywhere we went; the longer line ups at airports; the busy-ness of our island paradise in Koh Phangan; and the highly congested traffic conditions and extreme busy-ness of Ubud. We believe it has been so primarily because of our attitude to make it so. Happiness is a choice. This attitude is reinforced by the people we meet here, and why we return ... read more

For many years, we had an aquarium in our home. I recall spending whatever free time I had at the end of the work day with my face glued to the glass, mesmerized by the aquatic ecosystem I was watching. However basic, it was always calming to loose myself in that water world. So when I find myself now, twenty metres below the ocean surface, buoyantly floating amidst schools of thousands of fish; hovering over an enormous sleeping turtle; captivated by a gigantic manta ray or an angelic spotted eagle ray passing by - at all times awestruck by the brilliant colour and extensive diversity of the coral reef, and the equally vast array of marine life sustained within the reef ecosystem - I again experience a deep sense of calm, along with a profound sense ... read more

Five years. I did not even realize it had been that long since we last immersed ourselves in the ocean depths with our scuba gear, until I went to fill out my dive log later and noted the date of our last dive: April 4, 2018. We had been booked to dive in 2019 but had to cancel our dive trip after we both got head colds, as one absolutely cannot dive when congested. In 2020 our dive trip was cancelled as we were required to return to Canada early because of the Covid call back. We had the privilege of being reintroduced to scuba with a refresher course from Phari, the same excellent dive instructor who first taught us and provided us with our PADI Dive Certification in 2014. That was nine years ago. We ... read more

Although Bali may well be known to many visitors for its vibrant bar scene (Kuta), its impressive surf destination (Ulawatu), its diving (Ahmed, Tulamben, Nusa Penida), its famous terraced rice paddies (Tegalalang), its majestic volcano (Mount Agung), its volcano trekking (Mount Batur), or its incredible natural beauty everywhere, the essence of Bali, for us, is the spirit of its people - which we believe truly makes it the magical place it is. And there is no day that features this spirit more prevalently than Nyepe Day, the Day of Silence, which marks the beginning of the Bali Hindu New Year following the Balinese lunar (Saka) calendar. It is our understanding that the Balinese prioritize balance in everything, and that it is the responsibility of people to balance the energies of evil spirits, good spirits, and the ... read more

สบายดีขา Sabaidee ka! I began my study of the Thai language with 20 hours of private lessons in conversational Thai in 2019, repeating the process again in 2020. Because I have never studied a language before without also having access to its written form and grammatical structure - the foundational bricks with which it is built, I found this approach, with its random spelling format, somewhat frustrating. “There are no spelling rules until you learn the Thai alphabet, so just write the words whatever way you want for now; however you think they sound” said my teacher, Kru Cherry, who also informed me that three months of conversational Thai was a pre-requisite to beginning to read and write this language. So when I returned to study this year I begged her to let me begin writing, ... read more

There is only one regret I carry with our global travel lifestyle of the past decade: we cannot maintain an animal family member. Simply no pets allowed. We have considered it, but it is not viable when we are out of the country travelling five months of the year. I have had animal friends all of my life. Cats, rabbits, iguanas, turtles, fish, and dogs. Several dogs. Together, Stan and I had a wonderful black lab named Sam, who was part of our family long before our children arrived. We adopted him at four years of age, and he remained with us until he was sixteen. A short while later, we introduced two miniature schnauzers - Magic and Tuxedo - to our family, which now also included our two children. Our schnauzers each lived to be ... read more

Other than house concerts, and one small charity event I was part of last November, I have not performed publicly in over three years. Certainly Covid was responsible for much of this, but the time away from performing was not all lost, as it allowed me to immerse myself in extensive music literacy studies which inspired me to add three more instruments to my music repertoire: electric guitar, bass guitar, and, most significantly, a wind instrument I have come to love and experience as another voice - the harmonica. The bass guitar is the latest addition, and I am excited to continue my bass instruction when I return home, as I could not bring my bass along with me on this trip. Not so with my guitar though, or my complete collection of nine harmonicas, which ... read more

We were certainly warned prior to our arrival that Koh Phangan was incredibly busy this year. This proved to be true. There were far more vehicles on the roads, far more scooters, and the vacancy rates were generally maxed out, so that during our time there about 97% of the island’s accommodation facilities were fully booked. Almost all of the tourists were from eastern and western European countries, or other countries whose inhabitants were attempting to escape the realities of war and political unrest at home. I cannot say I blame them, as I would likely make the same choice. Thankfully, I have never had to walk in those shoes. The busy-ness was never a deterrent for us. After three years of too much quarantine and too much solitude behind cold walls, we completely welcomed this ... read more
