The Australia Day Long Weekend 2009 saw Team JuMa off again to the country. This time they were walking in the footsteps of Julie's convict, gold digging ancestors...the Cores, Lawsons, Broadies, Bursills & Poulters of Sofala, Wattle Flat and Gulgong. About 20 Poulter family members joined Julie and Marco for a weekend at a tourist park in Mudgee. On the Saturday Julie conducted a tour of Sofala and Wattle Flat, telling tales of ancestors from 150 years ago and the shannigans that went on in their lives. Julie's ancestors were no angels and were involved in theft, unlicenced grog selling, assault and even murder! The highlights of the tour were a drink at the ancestors watering hole, the Royal Hotel in Sofala...a look at the gaol cell at the Old Sofala Gaol...and grave hunting in Wattle ... read more

Julie - Only home 24 hours and I returned to the airport to fly to Dubbo for my cousin Brett's wedding. The wedding and the weekend were a great success and the bride looked stunning, as you will see from the pics! I also brought home the Peruvian hat called a chullo (chu-yo) for everyone (made from alpaca wool)...you will agree they all look really super sexy in them! ... read more

Julie - Finally the day had dawned when we were to go to Machu Picchu. Our train left Ollantaytambo station at midday and took 1 1/2 hours to arrive in Aguas Calientes (Hot Springs) which is the town at the bottom of the hill from Machu Picchu. It is a very small but lively town with some many restaurants and hotels it´s not funny. We had booked the Wiracocha Inn, a hotel a bit above our usual price range at $55. We were expecting great luxury for that price, considering our other hostels have cost so far around $25-$30 a night. Unfortunately, we had picked wrong again...the hotel was clean but did not have a TV and was just as basic as our other places. The breakfast the next morning was nothing to rave about either. ... read more

Marco - We arrived in Ollantaytambo (pronounced O-yan-tie-tambo) on Saturday at lunchtime and we headed straight for the hostel. Julie had picked the hostel, a little family run place called Andean Moon. The first sign that things weren´t right was the dog poo everywhere in the small lane way which turned me off. But Julie was very keen to continue with the booking. We got to the hostel and the room had no TV - disaster! I would have to entertain myself by talking to Julie! As we stayed a bit longer, we realised that the bed was very small and the toilet smelt...but there was worse to come. We were woken up three times in the night by crying babies, screaming kids and people coming home from a party at 2am. We got up the ... read more

Julie - Hi everyone...well, we are still in Cusco but leaving today for Ollantaytambo, about 80kms from here lower down in the mountains. From here we will get the train on Tuesday to Machu Picchu. We have had a very relaxing time in Cusco and seen most of the sights...lots and lots of old rocks! I love the archaeological sites, having studied ancient history in school, but I think Marco is a little over them! There are still more to see though... Marco has been eating his way through Cusco and enjoying everything on offer. I am still not eating much as I had another bout of gastro just as I thought I was coming good. We found a little British pub here the other night and had chips with gravy and watched the big soccer ... read more
