Tuesday Night Went to the other next door restaurant, Grillade de Courtepaille, there are apparently about two hundred throughout France, two dry ham starters and a Pork and a Steak. We were greeted very warmly and as soon as they realised we were English were offered appropriate menus. Found out that Bien Ciut is well done, which is my choice for steak. Would recommend the restaurant, if you are a meat eater. Not cheap, though good food. Tomorrow will be two weeks since our arrival in France and Nemours is probably about a third of the way down. Once we have [View Full Entry]

Nemours 2 Europe » France
Monday night. Next door was a restaurant called Grilpiz, we had two set menus €12.50 each. A spaghetti carbonara and chicken on Skewer. Tuesday, 7th October, 2008. Well the rain seems to be following us, looks damp out. The plan for today is to look around Fontainebleau. Pat wasn't feeling 100% so we had a slow start to the day. We went to the local supermarket and stocked up on few sundry items. Then off into Fontainebleau, and found the town centre underground car park. Off on foot, we found the first nice cafe and had deux grand cremes, our usual. [View Full Entry]

Sunday Night. We decided to enjoy the McDonald's next door, two Royal Cheeses. The place was really busy. Monday, 6th October, 2008. Raining again. The plan for today is Longly to Nemours. We had had an early night to give ourselves a good start for the day, as we were planning on driving about 300 kilometers. We completed the journey via the toll motorways and I have to say they are a delight to drive. We stopped off at a Motorway area and had a Ham & Cheese baguette, with coffees as a snack. Most of the journey was at about [View Full Entry]

Saturday continued We relaxed for a while then headed off for Dinner, took a walk into the Town Centre, found a few Bars, but nothing Restaurant looking. We had noticed a place next to the Hotel so decided to eat there. We had the buffet starter, then a Chicken in Tandoori sauce and the local Pork Haggisy type thing, good value, average food. Not sure if I have explained the Hotels we stay in. Premiere Classe are a chain of 217 Hotels that range throughout France, they cost about 40 Euro's per night, and they are more or less the same [View Full Entry]

Friday 3rd October 2008 continued After settling into the Hotel, we decided to go for a wander to find something to eat. The Campanille was handy but very busy, and on the way back there was an emergency going on with Fire & Police attending some gas being released at high pressure and we were only allowed to go back to the Hotel, so as we had had a good lunch anyway, we just ate some biscuits stashed for just this purpose. The night was pretty disturbed with lots of comings and goings and shouting outside the rooms in the early [View Full Entry]

Thursday continued We had dinner at The Hippopotamus, next door, a little pricey, but nice food, A Steak and a prawns, kebab, spring roll thingy. I don't remember hearing one car horn beep at us today. We take it in turns on a daily basis to do the driving. I don't think I really mentioned it before, but I was underwhelmed by Reims, I had expected much more to be made of the Champagne business, but it was hardly even mentioned in the Tourist Information. Friday, 3 October, 2008 The plan today is to travel from Reims to Chalons En Champagne, [View Full Entry]

Thursday 2 October 2008 Plan was to go across country quickly from Compiegne to Reims. Set off about 1000 ish, the route was due east, but we missed a turn from our planned route, which was really good for me because we ended up driving along the Chemin des Dames, which is an area the French fought heavily. We found a French Military cemetery at Ambleny, can't tell you much about it as there was no information around. However, it as a big one containing several thousand, I would guess, you will get an idea from the picture. An expression came [View Full Entry]

Tuesday 1st October, 2008 The plan today was to move from Saint Quentin to Compiegne. The journey was a little longer than we have been completing, we filled up with petrol first thing, only our second time since arriving. Drove through all the minor roads, which we prefer to do, you get to see the sights that way, rather than just hammering along the main roads. Stopped at a French Military Cemetery at Cambronne-Les- Ribecourt 2100+ mainly second world war. Laid out in circles, very few flowers. Our first planned stop was the Chateau de Compiegne, which Pat had found in [View Full Entry]

Tuesday 30 September 2008 A rainy day in France - sadly. Anyway, the plan was to visit Amiens Town, then Peronne, then American Memorial at Bony and then on to Saint Quentin. Found our way into Ameins and a town centre underground car park, we are definetly getting better at the driving and finding our way around. We only had one car beep at us today. We had a quick coffee at the first place we came to, Le Carlton. Strolled around the town for a short while, found the tourist office, for the city map etc. It was drizzling so [View Full Entry]

Monday, 29th September, 2008 Wow, what a day. Woke up and got moving quite early for us. Left, Bethune with a heading of Amiens, with a planned stop at Thiepval. We had booked our next night in a Premiere Classe in Amiens, so this was our destination for the day. Popped into a supermarket for bits and pieces. Visited The Notre Dame De Lorette, French cemetery, truly massive, containing 40,051. I may have said it before, but a photograph does not convey the sheer size of some of these cemeteries, with the grave markers stretching off into the distance, this place [View Full Entry]
